The Intel 4690k i5 is near equal in terms of gaming performance and about half the price of the 4790k - pair it with a R9 280 3GB and your going to be maxing out most games at 1080p and it should sit nicely in your budget!

it is , but at the time the transition to the 4000 series were a pretty big upgrade in terms of the efficiency of the gpu. which is why a 4670 and 3850 are so similar in speed despite one being a high end gpu and one being midrange.

when the 5000 series was released it was an even bigger jump in efficiency and totally made the 2/3/4000 series obsolete. But i still have my old 3870x2 chilling in my retro machine just for goofs.

Neat , someone did do a video on the fastest agp gpu setup with the 4670 but maybe if you overclock the 3850 you could match it perhaps.

I do know one thing , those old asrock boards are such garbage. I had the same 4-core dual sata 2 "transitional" board with agp and pci-e and socket 775 q6600 and man was it a hunk of garbage. This was a time period when asrock made some really cheap boards with terrible VIA chipsets. Here's hoping yours actually works when it arrives.

    ---------------EDIT----------------- Details changed and updated!
Okay guys heres the deal i made a video on the most powerful AGP system ever! It's basically rocking 2.3 Q6600 with 2GB of DDR2 and AGP 8X 1.5V compatible slot. But the board couldnt be overclocked it had tons of issues and after massive amount of research i discovered a side step!  Here's my part list and its all purchased I'm now just waiting for delivery! "I have now included the cost of the project parts below!"

    -Asrock 939Dual-SATA2 Motherboard supports 8X agp and 16x PCI-E 1.0a  (£17.83 £4.50 postage)

-Asrock AM2CPU daughter board which adds AM2 socket support and DDR2 support with a maximum of 8GB total compatibility!  (£19.50 free postage)

    -Athlon XP 64 x2 6000+ AM2 CPU 3.0GHZ Stock  (£7.13 £4.50 postage)

    -Athlon XP 4200+ 939  (£4.5 £3.80 postage)

-HIS ICEY Q HD 4670 1GB  (£60 Amazon including postage)

-BFG 7800GS OC AGP "i purchased 2 to be safe one worked!"  (£8 from CEX £1.5 postage) "this was incorrectly listed and i got REAL LUCKY!"

-Dell Ageia OEM PPU Physx PCI card (£7 + £4.50 postage)

-4GB of Kingston Hyper X DDR2 800mhz / will buy buying 2 more dimms to upgrade to 8GB later (£15 CEX)

-Antec A30 CPU cooler "not great but should be efficient enough"  (£15 retail store)

    -1999 Soundblaster LIVE VALUE PCI  (£3.20 + £3.40 postage)

-Corsair CX600 to ensure everything's powered as it has a 55+AMP rail. (£60 retail store)

-ANTEC CASE ( i got this for free from a friend and its a EX overclockers UK case)

    TOTAL COST OF PARTS AS OF 07/12/2017 = £217.16  +  £22.20 Postage

I also purchased a Athlon x2 4200+ just for flashing the board to the beta 2.31C bios to get the 6000+ running!. This is the best solution i could come up with as the alternative could support a AM3 quad but wouldn't be compatible with ATI or have a weird issue with 64bit OS drivers for its Nvidia nforce3 chipset. Technically the AM3 would be quicker but like i say 8GB of ram running on 32bit OS is kinda pointless. Needless to say the one I've chosen is compatible with all AGP cards unless they need 3.3volts etc. So any thoughts advice or crazy ideas like SSD raid would be awesome! I'm also getting a pimp CPU cooler and may overclock! its all abit rare and old so im unsure about OC'ing. Total cost im looking at around £160 all in which isnt too bad! thought i'd share my idea before i make some youtube videos!

    -----------------------------------------EDIT-------------------------- ADDED
So I'm waiting for the 939 AMD chip to turn up so i can finally test everything which may or may not happen tomorrow! I'm hoping anyone interested in this build will subscribe to my Youtube channel so i can get my first 100 SUBS. But i love all this old stuff so its always fun! If you would like to see anything specific running on this when I'm done let me know!

Hay guys! So pictures seemed a little underwhelming so heres my build video of my AGP/PCI-E hybrid build bench rig. I will be benching the FX5900ZT at some point but i still need to do the editing. If you would fancy helping me out by subing that would be a plus. Cheers from VPC
