Hi all,
I've got some problems with what path to choose - upgrade or only modernization and I don't know in which way should I go to get the "thing" ;).
Long story short - I'm a developer. Before that, I was servicing, modernizing and upgrading pcs for many clients for a couple of years. I want to modernize/upgrade/throw away my 4-year-old computer to something more capable of fast pacing and changing environment. 4 years ago when I've built my current machine I was having a good knowledge of it. Now - I'm stuck because I don't know what to do. Maybe somebody could help me with it?
What I want - The PC that will be capable of running flawlessly VirtualBox/VMware/hyper-v virtual machines without a hint that it's working on a host (a dream ;), I'm only using 1 instance of VM for testing purposes on some of the projects), 3-4 instances of visual studio, some gaming (from time to time, recently I've bought a PS4 Pro console and as for now - I don't need to change the video card, this will be taken into consideration in the next year maybe). Also, I don't want to change PC peripherals every year.
My current PC:
- Motherboard: MSI X79A-GD65 (8D) LGA 2011
- Procesor: Intel Core i7-3820, 3.6GHz, 10MB
- Cooler: CPU Thermalright HR-02
- Memory: Patriot Intel Extreme Masters 4x4GB DDR3 1866MHz CL9 1.5V, XMP 1.3 Quad Channel
- Video card: Asus GeForce GTX 780, 3GB DDR5 (384 Bit) (GTX780-DC2OC-3GD5)
- SSD: SSD Samsung 256GB SSD840 PRO SATAIII
- HDD: Western Digital Red, 3.5'', 1TB, SATA/600, 5400 64MB cache (WD10EFRX) [x2]
- Power supply: be quiet! Dark Power Pro 10 750W CM 80PLUS Gold
- 3 Monitors, external USB 3.0 hub, printer x2, Blu-ray writer
Options that I have taken into consideration:
- Change CPU only and add additional memory to the current system
- Change Motherboard, CPU (Can be AMD or Intel, it doesn't matter), and memory (the basis of what I'm thinking). I've got in one of the laptops the SSD m.2 2280 PCIe x4 Samsung SM951 NVMe, so I can reuse that if the motherboard will have m.2 slot. Also, 32GB of RAM is a must as I can see.
Budget - I think that if I'm planning only to change the 3 things that 1000$ will be enough, could be less, or more.
I've heard a lot about AMD Ryzen 7, Threadripper, etc. but to be honest - I'm stuck.
