    Hi there

I was planning to wait to upgrade my system until the next Ryzen was out. You know for new DDR generation and so forth.

But frankly, this was my argument for waiting for several generations... the next one will be a bit better, just wait. Well, now we have this clusterfuck going and nobody knows when the new CPU with new socket is gonna be released, nobody knows how overpriced DDR5 is gonna be and nobody knows how long it's gonna take for them to get all the bugs straightened out in all these new hardware implementations.

Add to that, I think I ave never in my life done a CPU upgrade without changing the board.

    SO.

I've kept my finger on the pulse on how to optimize Ryzen from time to time  but I am unsure how valid these things still are for Ryzen 5000.

So if I may I'd like to through my plans into the ring and add the thought process. Please feel free to tell me I'm an idiot on any of them.

In my mind, bumping infinity fabric to 1900MHz is/was desirable. Overclocking the CPU beyond that seems to often be counterproductive.

So I would like to go with the ASUS TUF GAMING B550-PLUS. It seems to be solidly built even offers PCIe4 even though I don't think I'll use it and it's a good value. Also all the latest USB I could need, HDMI 2.1 if I ever put in an APU (unlikely) and 2.5Gbit Ethernet, also nice to have but not supported by my switch.
I would put a Ryzen 5800x on it.
And Corsair Vengeance LPX clocked at 4000 MHz with a CAS latency of 18. Not the best but the Trident Z Neo with 3800 MHz, I think, and like CAS 14 cost almost a third more.

My idea is to put infinity fabric to 1900 MHz, step the memory down to 3800 MHZ and possibly tighten timings a bit.

I will keep using my old GTX 780. I don't game very much and when I do it usually city builders or map painters like EU4. I do DVD and Bluray Ripping too. My display is 1440p 60Hz and unless I finally come across a game that makes me really salivate for graphics and immersion (Cyberpunk was not it and I have given up on Star Citizen), this won't change anytime soon.

One important aspect for me is that the USB be rock solidly implemented. My current Asus Z97-a has weird interactions with my dock and KVM solutions. So if anyone knows of USB issues with the TUF, I'd appreciate a heads-up.

    So...

How off the rails is my thought process?

    Thank you.

I just tested from the workshop to the garage and that worked fine. So I will buy another set of adapters and hope they actually do work like the graphic on TP-Links website implies

Don't know yet. Only thing I know is that a Threadripper 1920X will be in it :).
And that's why I'm saying it needs to be somewhat quiet. It's in the attic next to the washing machine. I already have such a large chassis. Was a storage appliance before I replaced the custom Linux. Problem is cooling is really meant to be handled by really loud fans. I replaced them with quieter ones but whenever I push the dual Core2Quads to 100%, the temp sensor starts beeping like it's on fire :D.

It's possible I can mod this better but before I put in that work I just want to make sure that there isn't an affordable ready made solution.

Also to clarify, at the moment it only has 7 drives in it. This is meant to be future proof, that's why I want beyond 12 slots.

It came with four server power supplies that were trying to be louder than Man'o'War. Or a jackhammer, although I reckon they don't differ much on the decibels

The most interesting things on this channel ever (for me) was the two gamers, one rig build (and subsequentially the 7 gamers, one rig build).

That combined with your idea of "Who needs watercooling to make a PC quiet if it's in the next room?!" brought me to another idea: What if I had just one server hosting a bunch of VMs, one being a pf-sense machine, another my mediacenter, and two or more, depending on the graphics cards I put in, gaming PCs for myself and the family? Only problem: I can't afford connecting all of that throughout the house with fiber thunderbolt cables and hubs!

SO is there a VDI solution for this? Perhaps with XEN Desktop or SPICE that would allow me to just place a GigE wired ThinClient somewhere and connect my TV or my gaming peripherals and so on?

I've seen lots of people ask similar questions a few years back but I've never found anyone who'd done it who could comment on latency and cost.

I would love to see you delve into this topic.

I went with the Nexus six as that costs me only 150 compared to the 250 the Style would cost. Seeing as I could buy the standard black model only, the whole customizability doesn't really factor in. In the end, the AMOLED display was the deciding factor next to the price and availability (style is on backorder and would take 3 weeks...).

    Thanks for your help!

I don't think that would do you much good anyway. I live in Switzerland. I'd say 150 CHF, but I have no idea to what USD value that corresponds (as a simple conversion using xe.com will not yield anything that reflects real world prices, I'm afraid). The Corsair K70 costs between 140 to 150 CHF here. +/- 20% wouldn't be a problem for my perfect keyboard .

Of course, of course. I don't expect it to do wonders, but the G15 kinda feels sluggish, if that makes sense. I've used a cheap Logitech office keyboard, and that was way better for typing but was terrible when it came to key ghosting or whatever that's called.
