But this is in USD though, should do you fine but it doesn't have the bells and whistles you asked for. Can't find the Amazon NZ site...

Mr_Argon reacted to TimD in Video Suggestion: Buying and modernising 2nd hand servers
I am shopping for a second hand server which I needed for my small group of developers. Because I am a pretty decent follower of Linus Tech Tips videos I immediately thought of you guys while shopping.

I'm looking to purchase a second hand HP or Dell enterprise server, but wanted to know what was possible re further "beefing up" the server with something like an Intel Optane PCIe card, or some of the other modern day performance enhancers. That then got me thinking that something like that would be an excellent video for Linus Tech Tips to consider doing from time to time. Basically buy a second hand enterprise Dell/IBM/HP server from EBay, then see what components you can swap out with modern day tech to boost performance.

I'm thinking that there is a significant audience of technology enthusiasts / home server connoisseurs, or small businesses looking to get a little more mileage out of their existing servers that would find a once a month video like that pretty interesting... I know I would!

Feel free to use an example like a 32-bay Dell T630 server. Just something I randomly came up with. It's not like I have a personal interest in knowing what's possible with that particular setup or anything... ?

I don't think there would be much point in upgrading. The i7 950 still seems like a capable CPU, I'm sure that it will still work just as well as a low end Ryzen CPU, although I can't say how much longer it would last. I would suggest just use it until it dies, then worry about getting Ryzen.
    Maybe get 8GB of RAM.

I'd recommend checking out some of razer, steelseries and corsair mice. If you have a store you can go to to test shape that's always good

Not too familiar with NZ pricing, but here are some recommendations that should be around that price point:
G403 G305 (is wireless, but it's really good) G203/102 (pretty much wired G305) G402/502 (for more buttons) All of them are really good, so I'd say decide based on the shape/features.

Installed the main components yesterday and routed some of the cables, still need to pull the psu out of the old system and install it.

I usually recommend the ASRock B450 Pro4 in that budget range. It has a good 6 phase VRM and is very affordable.

Aorus motherboards are also good in the bang for buck department

Mr_Argon reacted to porina in Generic X79 mobo
Following on from the recent video Linus did on Chinese X79 mobo, I had another look and saw the price was lower than ever, and got one to play with. I wanted one for a while but it was a bit more than I wanted to pay. To go with it, I picked a Xeon E5 2667 which is Sandy Bridge era, 6 cores at 2.9 base, 3.5 turbo. The attraction of these mobos are claimed support of ECC registered ram (with a Xeon) which I have some spare.

Box it came in is the brown one you can see under it. Nothing else inside other than the IO plate and a single SATA cable. Windows 10 seemed to detect everything on mobo and got generic drivers for all. No unknown devices in Device Manager. I haven't looked if more optimal drivers are available yet.

Picture above was taken when I was testing it worked at all. I have since changed the ram to DDR3 1333 ECC registered, 4x4GB and it seems to work fine.

There are 6 SATA ports. Interesting printing on the mobo, suggesting some are SATA 2.0 or 3.0. In testing of 4 ports so far, I've only seen it transfer to SSD up to around 250GB/s, which looks like SATA 2 speeds (3Gbps). I'm using generic MS drivers at the moment so wonder if Intel ones might help there.

An interesting feature I like as a bencher is the inclusion of switches on mobo for start/reset, in lower left corner. There's also post code LEDs and built in speaker. For those of you not so old, these can also give diagnostic beeps, although without documentation it will be anyone's guess what they mean.

Please note this isn't a review as such. More a log of working out how it works, or doesn't. So many questions left...

Mr_Argon reacted to Chronified in New Affordable Internet Router
If you're using the wifi built into your modem, it's a common issue that modems overheat when their built-in WiFi is enabled.

As for upgrading your wireless, literally any Wireless N 300 dual-band or better router will do fine for you given your internet cap. An AC router would be nice too but it's not really necessary given your speed cap. Check your local Facebook Marketplace / Kijiji for a Wireless N router. Likely will be the most cost effective option.

Once you get set up with a new router, disable the wireless on your Modem and you should see stability come back.

Another solution (for my mom at least) was to use one of those laptop cooling fan pads on the modem itself, powered by the modems USB port.

How is that CPU being bottlenecked? I'm running an i5-3570 and an RX480 that I've overclocked to run like an RX580, and I have not found any signs of bottlenecking so I'm not sure how a GTX 960 is being bottlenecked by an i5 2500K

If you decide to pick used androids make sure they're either Pixels or part of the android one program, so they get updates for longer. If you buy new, then an Honor is your best bet. The Honor 8x seems like the best option

Size is fine, that's how people like me have 12 GB. The only bad thing about size differences is that it can only run in single channel. Speed can also be mixed, but it will automatically clock to the lowest setting I believe.

For reference all of this is from my own experience with my PC. I'm running 1x8 and 1x4. The 8GB stick is supposed to be 1600MHz, and the 4GB stick is 1333MHz. Everything seems to be fine for me, although because its a laptop you're working with, your mileage may vary
