They are 5gb/1gb combo sfp ports and not sfp+ ports. It looks like a weird proprietary standard. You will probably struggle to find a nic for your nas that supports it. It appears to be intended for stacking multiple switches.

I'm watching college basketball and have been researching this during commercials and came across this about these ports, which according to the data sheet are "combo ports", have a look

I'd recommend looking used for speakers first and foremost.  You'd be surprised what you can find in relation to full 5.1 sets on the used market for typically a lot less.  For example you can get This complete Paradigm package for $700.  Toss on a decent Denon AVR and you're in business with a solid above entry level rig.

Bonus points: good speakers that you buy later on typically don't depreciate much more.  You could probably lose the sub and still justify $500 five to ten years down the road for the speakers as long as you don't wreck them.  This means more money towards future upgrades should you decide you need them.

    Just my two cents though.

I currently am running a full klipsh system with atmos. I like klipsh plus once they have the 50 percent speical, you can save alot. I would recommend a marantz or denon receiver. I have the marantz sr6015. Speakers i am using r-820-f , r34c, klipsh 8 in ceiling  and r-41s for atmos.

My companies a bit dumber I think, rather then buying a bulk order of some specific business-grade laptop, they'll go out to Best Buy every time they hire someone that needs a computer and buy whatever $500 pos the sales person talks them into. This means that the 3 latest people have Windows 8 laptops they struggle with daily (most are in their 40's and barley computer literate in the first place).

Just got back from 3 hours with my Grandpa's laptop, his C drive was 92% fragmented, I had no idea such a thing was possible. He also fell for the fake phone call from "Microsoft" to install some random "totally not a virus" program onto his computer. His laptop's power options were also set to 0% screen brightness even when plugged in with a 5 min idle to power-off. Not too mention all the HP bloatware that came with the thing.

That one's gonna require a round two.

DanTheMuffinMan reacted to Cyracus in Game/system crashes after adding more RAM
If you want to push frequency you need to manually set soc and vddp voltage, soc max is 1.2v, vddp is 1.1v (there's a similarly named cldo_vddp, max is 1v for that) vddg voltage also does stuff for ram, personal experience is it does more on the timings side than frequency, 1.15v max (requires soc at least 0.05v higher than vddg)

I would recommend starting with 1.15v soc, 1v vddp, and 1.08v vddg, leave primaries on auto and set vdimm voltage to 1.35v, then push the ram frequency up incrementally until you hit 3600mhz or a test errors. Test with prime95 large ffts, occt large data set or memory test, tm5 with the 1usmus or anta777 profile, or hcimemtest (for the free version you have to open 1 window for each cpu thread and divvy your memory between them). I've heard memtest86 is unreliable nowadays.

But I'd shoot for at least 1hr no errors, for just pushing frequency (longer tests needed if/when tightening timings). If you can't get to 3600mhz you can raise soc, vddp, and vddg (in the order I would adjust them). If you do hit 3600 you can lower the voltages or proceed to trying the xmp/docp profile again with soc, vddp, and vddg set manually

So using DOCP is a overclock, and not guaranteed. So thats likely your issue. Also running 4 sticks normally means your can't run at as high of freqencies. Try running it at 3200 and see if you still have errors.

RAM speed and AMD CPUs are very finicky things. It's why I don't use them (I prefer Xeon builds)
You'd have to play with the RAM speeds and timings manually, and IMO, it's not worth it. Someone will come along I"m sure who can tell you better settings to use, but I prefer stability over speed any day.
@Electronics Wizardy may be able to help.

    Worthless. Use MemTest86.
Probably bad RAM. In my professional experience, G.Skill RAM is crap.
Are you using XMP in the BIOS? If so, turn that off.
Are you OCing anything? If so, turn that off.

I run Plex on FreeNAS and it works perfect. I don't have any issues with it and it's very easy to set up. If you have a spare USB and hard drive laying around, pull your main drives from the PC and boot up FreeNAS to see if you like it.

One thing to keep in mind with using a gaming PC as a NAS 24/7 is electricity cost. If your PC idles at 100w the cost will add up quickly. A lower powered unit would pay itself off after a couple of years.

Windows 10 Home has a nasty habit of rebooting on it's own for updates, so I'd reccomend moving to a server OS of some sort. I don't have PLEX, but I do run my own NAS via samba on Ubuntu server edition.

Honestly just... make some games. Think of a concept for a game that you feel is within your reach from a technical standpoint and then make it. Once you've decided what type of game you want to make it should be easier to find the right tools for the job.

There are game design classes in some universities/colleges as far as I know. I think, it might be easier to get a more permanent job with a degree in something than just a Brilliant course.
Your Computer Networking degree might also be quite helpful, since online games are pretty popular right now.

You can get book bundles on Humble Bundle right now for both programming and game design.  That'll keep you in learning material for a while.

When did the scientific consensus ever suggest that social distancing should be voluntary and last for just two to three weeks?  Every credible expert I've seen has said that social distancing should be mandatory (or it won't be properly maintained) and that it has to last as long as necessary to flatten the curve.

Besides, good science means adapting to new data, not setting an arbitrary timeframe for removing restrictions and holding to that schedule no matter how safe things really are.  You're one of the people that's the most frustrating -- those people who thought they were just in for a two-week staycation and got annoyed that this is actually a global health emergency with no clear endpoint.

DanTheMuffinMan reacted to japers in My personal Make-A-Wish experience and Linus' point on waste and consumerism.
After Linus' very heartfelt message on Youtube it got me thinking if there was anything that could be done to tackle the problems he highlighted around waste. The video itself was very relatable. I think anyone who has ever suffered a burnout or a career crisis can recognise themselves in that video. For me, the part about leukaemia really hit home.

When i was 7 years old i had leukaemia and i also had a 'make-a-wish' granted. Id fallen in love with computers during my very long hospital stays where they had a windows 95 machine in the family area. So my make a wish was for a laptop computer which at the time (2001) was a pretty expensive old deal. I think it was a Samsung Q20 or X10 and it ran windows ME and it gave me years of entertainment. Playing the first Harry Potter game on a trackpad in a hospital bed was not easy!On the off chance that Linus is lurking on the forums, just know that make a wish really does make a difference to kids and whatever he did for the child and his family would have made more difference than you could imagine. It breaks the monotony of hospital stays. Kids growing up with cancer have to grow up and mature very very quickly and so respite from that situation which takes over your entire life and the lives of those around you, is absolutely vital.

20 years on i'm working as a full time CGI Artist and make a wish is directly responsible because i got into playing roller coaster tycoon on my laptop and eventually got into modding and then 3d modelling and now i have my degree in Visual effects and have been working in industry for the last 6 years.

But the point about waste got me thinking about some sort of LMG online marketplace where tech could be resold. Built from the ground up to sell components scrapyard wars style but with more reliable product information and perhaps even pricing recommendations based on component market value. It could help recycle old tech as well as allow for a somewhat more trusted and informative experience than with ebay and other sites. Yeah there could be problems. But i'm sure there were a thousand reasons not to start the floatplane project in the first place too. Its not a perfect solution. But at least it could help tackle some waste problems and it'll make for a good new series of scrapyard wars if it took off. Plus they have 10 million viewers who are 100% the target market.

I mean scrapyard wars is essentially fun to watch because of how difficult it is to find good used tech deals.
So who better to create the solution?

    Just a thought.
    Thanks for the videos!

dude is hitting that midlife crisis. I'm right there with him. This shit 8-5 job is turning me into a zombie just so i can afford my lifestyle, which is spending 80% of it at work, preparing for work, and missing out my life and kids and family. I have another 17 years of this to look forward to. At least Linus can make a lot of money and actually contemplate retiring at some point in the near future.
