  1. Hello everyone, I've got a couple of questions about my Cisco SG500-52MP switch. I'm trying to get the best possible speed connection to the computer that is going to become my NAS in the near future. 1) Is it possible to use the two SFP ports on the far-right as normal switch ports to a computer? They are labelled as G51/SE and G52/S4. Not sure if they are special port only for trunking/etc. 2) Are they 5 gigabit ports? I think that is what the 1G/5G indicates, that they can be either 1 gigabit or 5 gigabit. And that's how I read the datasheet from Cisco. 3) Does anyone know exactly what SFP module, connector, cable I would need to connect it from the switch to a PC? Perhaps there is some kind of SFP to CAT6 adapter so I can just run CAT6 to the PC? 4) Any NIC recommendations for the PC to make use of the 5gbps SFP connection? Thanks in advance, please let me know if I need to provide any more info. The existing fiber connection is to the router.
  2. Audio noob here. What would be the best way to go surround sound these days with a budget of about $2000 Canadian? Use-case is mostly watching TV shows, movies and couch gaming on a 4k Bravia tv. I've been using a soundbar + subwoofer for the last couple of years but I've heard surround can make a big difference. I've got my main PC plugged into the TV, that's what runs most of my content if it matters. I think I want Atmos, but I don't really know audio stuff. I liked the look of that Sony HT-A7000 that Linus reviewed a couple months ago, but I assume a receiver + multiple speakers is still going to deliver a superior performance? Anyway, please let me know if there are any general recommendations for a from-scratch surround sound system in the $2000 budget range or if I need to provide any more info for a recommendation. Don't suppose there's an RTings equivalent for audio stuff?
  3. Well I took it all apart, reseated the CPU and now the lights and fans are spinning. Unforunatly I removed the last of my thermal paste doing this so I won't be able to leave it on and see if it posts until the new paste gets here next week, but I'm calling that a win for now. Thanks for the help everyone.
  4. Replaced the MOBO and CPU and still not booting, what did I do
  5. Replaced the cpu and still not booting guess I need to buy a new MOBO and try that...
  6. I'll ask around but I don't think there's much hope of that. Guess I'll try re-seating the CPU one more time tonight and if nothing I'll have to try to order a new one
  7. Hey everyone, sad news today. Specs in Sig for Hex, my gaming PC. I bought a Corsair H100i to replace the stock AMD Wraith cooler and the installation went about as wrong as possible. I found the Wraith cooler very hard to take off and the CPU came out with it. I couldn't pull the CPU off the Wraith by hand so I used a heat gun to soften it up and was eventually able to pull the CPU off. And fling it on to the floor. There were about a dozen bent pins, thermal paste and some dirt in the CPU. I used a tooth brush and isopropyl alcohol to clean the pins off and then tweezers to bend them back into place. I then carried out the rest of the cooler installation and when I pushed the power button; nothing, no lights, no fans, no post. I tried unplugging and re-plugging every PSU and MOBO cable, resetting the CMOS battery, jumping the power button pins directly. Then I tried shorting the 4th and 5th pins on the 24-pin and that caused the fans and lights to come on. So does it sound like I killed my CPU, MOBO or both? Any point in attempting an RMA? Would it be through the retailer or directly to the manufacturer?
  8. Alright, I left DOCP off and just changed the frequency to 3200 MHZ. Look's like it's running stable now, Star Swarm ran fine and Prime95 isn't throwing any errors yet. Thanks again.
  9. @Electronics Wizardy Interesting, I did not know that, OK, I'll go try setting it to 3200, run some tests and report back. Thanks for the help guys.
  10. @Radium_AngelI went into the BIOS and DOCP (Ryzen's version of XMP I believe, correct?) was set to "Profile DDR4-3603 18-22-22-42-1.35 V" so I disabled it and am now able to get the Star Swarm Stress Test to run just fine. I've got Prim95 running with no errors so far. Of course now my RAM is only running at the default 2133 MHZ. Any way to get it back up to the manufactured 3600 MHZ spec? If the error only occurs when running DOCP, what does that mean?
  11. Hello Radium, just tried re-seating the RAM, no diff. I'll jump into BIOS now to check XMP. Nope, no OC. How do I actually use MemTest86? I downloaded it but it looks like it wants me to load it onto a USB, is that the only way?
  12. Hello everyone, I built this PC (Hex in sig) a few months ago using two 8 gb sticks of G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series DDR4 3600 RAM. Decided to grab myself 2 more sticks during the boxing day sale (same exact RAM) for a total of 4 x 8gb = 32gb, they arrived yesterday and I installed them. I had my PC restart on my that night while playing Age of Empires 2 Definitive with some friends and so today I decided to run the Windows Memory Diagnostic to see if my new RAM was the problem. It returned no problems found. I booted up the Star Swarm Stress Test on Steam and had it crashed after a few seconds. I then launched Cyberpunk and it crashed after about a minute and now crashes on start up. Seems like it can't be a coincidence that I installed new RAM and now suddenly am having crashes, but how can I confirm that if the Windows Memory Diagnostic says it's all good? Specs in sig, but let me know if you have any questions or advice. I have Prime95 running now, but I honestly don't know how to use it, I see it saying a bunch of Fatal Errors regarding rounding results...
  13. Update: Well ladies, gentlemen and future googlers it looks like removing the bad drive, even though it wasn't the boot drive, cured the issues my PC has been having. So far it's been perfectly stable.
  14. Hey guys, I've never built or used a NAS before but would like to re-purpose my existing gaming pc into one for media server duty on my LAN. It will only have one drive to start with, but I'll be adding more as budget allows for RAID. Anyway I'm pretty solid on the hardware but I wanted to know what my software options are. I've seen Linus recommend PLEX and would definitely like to try that out for media streaming. However my main question is whether I should be installing that on a basic Windows 10 Home installation or should I be installing a more specialized OS like FreeNAS? I'd like to just leave the PC running 24/7 plugged into my gigabit switch with a static IP and remote into it whenever I need to manage it without having to hook up a monitor/keyboard/mouse. It's primary purpose will be media storage and streaming, also things like family photo's, backing up documents, etc. Ideally I'd like to be able to access it over the internet, but that's not a huge deal. Anyway, any tips or maybe a guide on this forum somewhere I should be following? Let me know if I need to provide any more info for you beautiful people to help me.
  15. Update: So as recommended I re-installed windows a month ago and for a time that seemed to fix the issue. However the past two days I've gotten the attached screen when booting up my pc. It looks like my oldest HDD is starting to fail, which is fair I think I'd have that drive for like a decade at this point and all it holds is games. However I'm not 100% sure it's related to my issues since this is NOT the boot drive. Could anyone shed any light on whether or not an error in a non-boot drive HDD could lead to the issues I've experienced?
  16. Thank you @fpo for taking the time to read and write all that. I think game programming and level design are what appeals to me the most, but I know from experience that that may change once I get started. I'll check out the youtube videos you recommended, along with downloading Unity and trying my hand at creating a level or 2. I do indeed have an architectural portfolio from college and some examples of my work, but it's nothing all that impressive, it was very basic and repetitive recreations of building based off satellite imagery. I recall the old standard advice was to create your own games/mods from scratch and use that as your portfolio for a job with a developer, is that still true? Are there any specific Udemy courses you've tried or would recommend? @PineyCreek I am a big fan of Humble Bundle so I'll go ahead and grab their Game Design bundle. @startrek03 Unfortunately neither my local community college nor university offer a game design course, the closest would be a Mobile App Development course at the college or the generic Computer Sciences degree from the U that includes a few gaming related classes. Although after already getting 2 degrees I am hesitant to dive back into formal education full-time.
  17. Hi guys, I'm a 30 year old recently unemployed nerd in Canada. My greatest regret in life was never getting into video game development so I'm thinking of switching careers into that field. What do you think is the best way to start learning? Is it still watching YouTube tutorials (got a playlist you'd recommend?)? Or are their better structured online courses from services like Brilliant that Linus is always advertising? Or is it better to try modding an existing game first? Perhaps the best answer is going back to college (I have 2 degrees already, Computer Networking and Architectural Technology) for a formal course? Or is it better to start with more generic programming and software development stuff? I was a solar system designer/3d modeller/project manager/office admin for the last 8 years, but the company I worked for went bankrupt so now I'm one of the masses of people all trying to get a new job in a very crowded market. I've got a mortgage and about a year before my life savings are drained and I'll be forced to sell. I did a bit of programming (JavaScript, HTML, CSS) in college, I didn't retain any of it, but I do remember picking it up pretty easily and getting easy A's. I'm no artist but have experience with drafting and basic 3d modelling. I think level design is what immediately grabs my attention, but that might just be because I don't know enough about the industry and it's various specialties. I could write a few thousand more words but I don't want to overwhelm any of you helpful people, let me know if there is any more useful info I can provide to improve your recommendations. Thank you for looking.
  18. OK, I'll try wiping my smaller ssd and installing windows on that and see if it makes a difference.
  19. I have not, since the problems are present while using the BIOS I assumed that meant the problem couldn't be with the drive or windows installation, is that an incorrect assumption on my part?
  20. The wierdness grows, now my PC is non responsive in Windows and shows the wrong time.
  21. That's what I was afraid of. Unfortuantly I'm one of the laid-off masses so now's not a great time to buy a new mobo/cpu/ram.
  22. No, I haven't tried that, I'd like to avoid it if possible, I don't think it's a CPU-socket problem since I can still do everything fine once I get into Windows (barring the occasional weird crash) including gaming, but let me know if I'm just ignorant there. Temps seem normal, low 40's under normal use, maxing out at 60 during a quick cinebench test. EDIT: Should also mention nothing has changed about my physical components this year and I haven't touched the CPU/cooler in years.
