  1. Hi, I recently started to think on making my own NAS to solve some of my space problem, however buying something from scratch is not an option. Recently I came across a video showing how to make a laptop in to a NAS using a USB to boot the TrueNAS software from, and the HD or SSD use in the main storage was just to store data. So, it got me thinking. Could I be able to use and external Hard Drive enclosure to add more storage to the laptop NAS? for now I am using 4-bay enclosure connected to my main PC with an eSATA, however it can be connected to any laptop using USB. This got me thinking, would I be able to use an external enclose for the NAS?. I repair laptops and computers mostly just hard drive replacement, reinstall of operating system and other common issues. I have many old laptop hard drives that I have fully formatted and the previous laptop owners did not want, even after explaining to them that it can be use for additional storage. So I was thinking of using this hard drives as additional storage for the laptop NAS. The hard drives are working fine, they are just slow because, well they are old. I do not want put them on the trash but I have no other use for them. There are no recycle places for electronics near my city. So any advice or recommendation that you have would be appreciated, as I am new to the NAS storage thing.
  2. It is not for me, an old co-worker wanted to give some new light to this. He does not want to get rid of it since it didn't use it a lot. He got it new yeas ago but store it away since he had to move. Never use it since. he is going to use it mostly for web browsing but wanted to see if it was possible to play some retro games on it.
  3. Hello. I have an old pc that I want to upgrade the motherboard to one that has USB 3.0. So far the options that I have found on pcpartpicker is making me a bit confuse. What would be the best motherboard for an Intel Pentium e5700 @ 3.00 GHz? I have change the case but I realized that the motherboard does not have 3.0 usb. I added a BEYIMEI 5-Port PCI Express Expansion Card with 19 pin connector. However if the motherboard have it included, it would be great. That way I can Clear space for a dedicated gpu, since I added a WiFi and Bluetooth card. On that note, Would a GTX 760 would work for this?
  4. Thanks, I might go for the 2700X, it's a few dollars cheaper, and I do some video editing once in a wile. ? what ram would it work best. the 3000 MHz or 3200MHz? I know the 3200 might give me more performance, but does the 2700x needs that?
  5. I have mange to overclocking it up to 15% now. However I started to notice some strange performance, it some times does some small freezing. So I'll be leaving it to that. I have been able to do some fast video exports so I'm fine with the performance so far.
  6. No i have an ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming Motherboard (ATX) AMD Ryzen 2 AM4 DDR4 DP HDMI M.2 USB 3.1 Gen2 B450 I upgrade it last year around my birthday, I accidentally bend the USB 3.0 pins on my first motherboard, although it was working fine some usb ports fail to read usbs 30% of the time. Yea I could get better performance from the cpu by manually overclocking but I don't have that much of a confidence yet, specially with my limited budget. Can't risk it.
  7. It's the ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming Motherboard (ATX) AMD Ryzen 2 AM4 DDR4 DP HDMI M.2 USB 3.1 Gen2 B450, I upgraded it last year around my birthday. Yes I know its an overkill motherboard for the cpu I have plans for upgrading it too, and building another budget pc for ether living room or.... re-sell it? I don't know I'm stock, I'm the only PC tech enthusiast in my family, the rest it's fine with their 7 years old Lenovo twist-pad and 2008 mackbook and 4 years old tablets. I also have an almost 10 years old Asus Essention Series pc, which was my first top of the line pc back then. Now speaking of CPU up grades, what are your recommendations? what CPU you recommend for this motherboard for a 200 or less budget?
  8. Hello. I was wandering if there is a profile for the IA suite 3 Dual Intelligent Processors 5 software? I started to get an interest on over-clocking my CPU, however, someone told me that the Ryzen 5 1600 can not be over-clock. But using the software I mention, and according to it, I have manage to over clock my cpu to 9% with out any issues. So anyone know if there are pre-made profiles somewhere? Thanks in advance for any info.
  9. That may not be a bad idea. But I want to start something. I do not have children but I do have younger siblings. My little brother is showing interest in DIY PCs and my little sister wants to learn video editing. So what I would like to do is give them the old but working hardware to them, to start learning and build their own. I don't want to give them something that will fail right after I give it to them.... though they will learn not to trust the older brother.... it could be good to do an April fools joke, no? thank tho I'll consider it, I have not decided what to buy yet.
  10. Yes but would there be any cheaper then the ones we have now? I'm just waiting see if prices drop a bit more. Like I mentioned before my budget is limited. To many bills to pay. If you are saying to wait for prices to drop more, then yes that's what I'm doing, im just collecting info just in case it does not go down more.
  11. With the prices of GPUs going down it seems it is a good time to upgrade my first built. I have on it a GTX 1050. I am a noob builder and I find it a bit confusing when it's about GPUs. Right now a gtx1070 TI it's about the same cost as a gtx1080 no TI, if I get the 1070TI I'll save bucks but would it be best to expend the extra bucks and get the 1080 no TI? I saw some benchmarks and it seems the 1070 TI is not that far behind the regular 1080. A gtx 1080Ti is out of my budget despite price dropping.
  12. Oh ok I thought OC was for something else. I don't have need for Overclocking since I am not a power user, I understand the benefits of it but the few game I play don't demand for it. At least not now.
  13. what is OC? sorry I have not heard of it before.
