    Hey all,

I'm working closely with our new Merchandise Manager (who you will all meet soon...) on a crapload of new designs & new merch avenues... we will have some very exciting stuff coming for you guys in the next few months. As always, you can find the latest (including new TechLinked merch!) LMG stuff at https://www.designbyhumans.com/shop/LinusTechTips/

Today we wanted to get a bit of feedback from you... our goal for 2018 is to deliver new styles and designs that embody the passion that we all have for tech, and an association with the channel, but which can also stand on their own as interesting and cool designs. So, in order to create those designs and tailor them to suit our community, we put together a quick anonymous survey to get a better idea of your styles, preferences, and tastes when it comes to merch, and clothing in general. Your responses are greatly appreciated!!

Well my 2016 MacBook Pro seems buggered, potentially my Desktop too since its rather old (4690k).......Guess I'm in fight the update mode. No security patch is worth 30% of my performance. If its 5% that's ok but this is insane regardless.

So, I really cba with this to turn into an anti - Apple thread, or iOS vs Android etc etc.

So long story short, I've had the iPhone X since day one launch but the last few weeks have been terrible. I'm currently sat with my handset stuck in what feels like a never-ending boot loop. This happened yesterday but it suddenly came out of it after 40 - 50 minutes while talking with Apple support. However, it's been like this now for around 2 hours. The last few days the apps and phone would just force quit as soon as they opened and the phone would restart regularly when trying to do anything. At this point, I'm just super pissed off as I just want to reply to messages properly.

I've tried what feels like EVERYTHING online. Hard resets don't work, heck no recover or reset works (I've done them a good few times with previous iOS devices) I've tried connecting to iTunes to do a restore and nothing is working. WTF do I do and am I alone in this?!

    *edit*

I'm aware there is an update that came out today, but I cannot open settings to update the damn thing when it was actually 'working' - completely irrelevant, test drove a Tesla model S today which was sweet.

The top lcd is sort of redundant now days, because all the relevant information is displayed in the viewfinder anyway. I myself have gotten used to using it since the days of film, so now I can't live without one, but I suspect its something like being used to wear a watch, if you leave home without it you feel naked, even if your phone is glued to your hand all day.

Well that depends on how far you want to take it. The 50mm 1.8 STM is an amazing lens, and given its very low price and size, I see virtually no reason not to get one. For a telephoto, it really depends on how far you want to take it.

Here are some options (I'll rank them from most serious/best to worst for you):

Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8, great lens, super sharp and a 1.8 aperture in that range zoom is unheard of. (but its at £999)
or, if that is too wide, maybe a tamron 70-200 f/2.8 VC G1, I just picked one up myself for just under £600 used.

If those seem too expensive (even though as far as lenses go they aren't), a 70-300 will get the job done, but it won't be the fastest, sharpest etc. At least its small enough not to be a nuisance to carry around.

I would also look at a wide angle, like the Canon EF-S 10-22mm, which goes for about £250 used and gives great IQ given the price, even though it costs considerably more new.

But, I do believe you are getting too far ahead of yourself. The 17-50mm is a great multipurpose focal range and will cover a lot of your needs. Get that and use it as a benchmark for how much longer or shorter a focal length you'd need. If you need more recommendations for lenses in the future, then just ask again. But be aware, camera gear is expensive, if you think a £500 lens is expensive, it really isn't.

If you are going to be doing night shots, especially long exposures, a tripod will certainly come in handy. In that case I recommend 3 legged thing myself. Manfrotto, Benro and Mefoto also do some pretty cool stuff, but if you do buy one, get a good one rather than a cheap one, trust me. You'd normally need a remote trigger(pretty cheap in the first place), but the 800d has a wifi connection and  the Canon app is pretty neat, so it isn't really necessary.

    *LONG THREAD WARNING*

So let me start of by saying, gosh darn has it taking me waaaay too long to finally join these forums! It's good to be here finally  Like many on here, I've been watching Linus from the very early days on NCIX and oh boy is it awesome to see him grow and form LMG.

So a bit of background info. I started building PCs around 10 years ago, when those crappy IDE cables were the fastest connection and black case interiors weren't a thing. My first build was terrible... molex adaptors everywhere, cable management wasn't in my vocabulary and the case... my god. Even though it looked terrible by today's standards, I was really proud of it.

AMD Phenom X3 build circa 2009 (yeah.. I'm still not sure why I didn't get an X4 chip) It's amusing to look back and see the severe lack of effort by manufacturers to have complimenting colours schemes at the time. The modding scene from what I remember was pretty huge though! I even had a HD3450 in that system for quite a while, I still have it somewhere..

Over the years and a few PC builds later, I was still always having to just botch together systems as I could never afford a complete full new build. I'd always have to pull an old drive from my last PC or make do with my current case, skimp on a power supply and buy a dodgy '700W' one with ketchup and mustard cables  I'm sure many can relate to this, but I was still happy.

My main system for around 7 years was my trusty AMD Phenom II 955 black edition and a HD4890 (upgraded to a HIS 6970 at a later point) This was built not long after owning the Phenom X3 system. However, Intel was about to hit AMD hard with their announcement of their soon to be game changing i7 line of CPUs. As soon as the i7s came out I wanted one. The 960. That was the CPU to have, however like today, they were really expensive and I could not afford one, nor the motherboards - heck I couldn't even afford a proper PSU!

(above) A rather unsightly interior on one of those awful huge turbine cases with a piano gloss finish. Honestly the worst case ever made. I highly recommend to new builders to never ever go cheap on a case!
(below) My efforts for a black interior in an Antec 300 case (legendary case!)

For some reason, I decided to go crossfire...If only the PCI slots had that much clearance nowadays haha! I did love these reference coolers for the ATi cards around the 3000 - 4000 series cards.

    -------------------------

Over the years I flirted with upgrading my system to the i7 I really wanted. The 4th gen i7s was when I almost pulled the trigger initially, but never did. Then the 7th gen approached...

During a CSGO game my power supply blew up. My PC was out of action for around 8 months while I was in between work. I also use Mac for my work so a replacement PSU wasn't urgent (although I did completely drank to silver... *shudder*..) I ended up picking up a Corsair CX series PSU to replace my noname cheapo Chinese version.

    -------------------------

Thanks to the HTC Vive (and lots of video editing) I ended up picking myself up a Strix 1070 to make my system VR ready (still running the Phenom II amazingly and this was my first new card since the 6970) However, due to my own stupidity I thought GPUs wouldn't be bigger than the huge HIS 6970 cooler, but I was wrong. The Strix 1070 was literally about .5cm too long for my Antec 300 case ... sigh. So a quick trip online and a Corsair 450D later, I was up and running. I was rocking some 'baller' (as described by Luke in one of the scrapyard wars episodes) OCZ Gold RAM. Ah.. OCZ. I had all my 4 slots taken up with only 8GB of RAM and wanted MOAR!! So I ordered a 2X16GB kit of RAM from Corsair. ONLY TO REALISE MY BOARD WAS SO OLD IT COULD ONLY TAKE 4GB STICKS MAX.

This was the point I just said f*ck it. This was the time to build a new system...

I wanted this to be an accumulation of all the things I learnt over the years. The patience and desire to create some I've wanted to build. As a creative and artist, I wanted something that wasn't only a workhorse, but a piece of art in it's own right.

and here it is. Progress -> Near Completion

You can never have too many photos of these Dominator sticks. Man are they sexy.

This was the 'completed' build. A system that worked but wasn't a finished build in terms of aesthetics.

    Upgrades below included:

    - Swapping out the CX series for the AX860i (I am and was aware of the problems people had with this model)
    - Getting aftermarket / custom sleeved cables for the PSU
    - Replacing all the fans with Maglev series ones

The updated build. Looking cleaner, however the cables weren't making me smile.. so I checked out CableMod for some cables. To my surprise they didn't float my boat for what I wanted, amazingly Corsair had pretty much the exact cables I wanted and at a lower price than what CableMod were offering. I went with the Metallic Graphite set, which was exactly the look I wanted

I took quite some time picking out components that would compliment each other. I didn't just want to match up blacks and whites, but match metals, finishes and show a class of engineering. I absolutely love the turn companies have made this year with muted and monotone colours schemes. This allows the builder to be more creative in then filling out the build with whatever secondary colour they want. I love how there is only a splash of red from the AX860i. It was important for me on this build to not have anything in this system that would detract from this overall aesthetics when it was off *cough* mustard and ketchup cables haha!

The cables were looking a little crazy. I totally forgot to order cable combs with these which actually ended up being the best thing that happened. I discovered these gorgeous billet aluminium ones over at MNPCtech. It was so strange finally ordering something from Bill as it was him that first ignited the PC building passion in me 10 years ago. I remember watching all his crazy almost MTV mod videos, featuring PC cases with airbrushing effects... ahh.. Good times!

    A little tidier...

Added some Corsair RGB goodness - and yes, that really is the keyboard I still use. PS2 2001 baby *disclaimer the 24 pin is wonky because the back panel isn't on. Long story...*

(I did also check out the CableMod ones of these too, but got increasingly annoyed with not being able to find a video or photo showing the white. In nearly every shot the camera's white balance was set wrong and wasn't showing an accurate colour... sigh. I finally found a video featuring these Corsair ones showing it was a cool white which sealed the sale and ended up also being cheaper!)

The monotone look of this build comes to life with a splash of colour from the RGB. It really changes the feel of the build.

Some colour experimentation. I have a whole colour pallet and ideas exploration on my Instagram for those who're interested. Being a photographer, aesthetics and colour are important to me. The thing that I know people will love to point out and ask, is the strange GPU combination. I know, it's not the conventional setup, but from the initial VR upgrade I ended up having a 'spare' 1070. The matching aesthetics (disregarding the difference of cables) was too tempting not to try. The 1070 will probably go in a build for my other half for her own VR rig and I'll go SLI 1080Tis and a custom water loop HOWEVER, the current issues with SLI and VR put me off. Don't get too obsessed with specs just yet you'll find out what you really need once you start to shoot. Getting inexpensive used gear means you won't loose much by reselling later. For your budget and your shooting style, a used 7D or 70D fit very nicely as both have fast AF that most mirrorless still struggle to match especially in low light and EF-S lenses are relatively affordable too.

Now before I sound biased toward Canon DSLRs, I do think mirorless are extremely good these days but I think you'll learn better on limiting hardware and will help to decide whether you need features such as 4K or a smaller and lighter body. Skill is definitely more important than gear.

Making parts full time has taken away my time from making those build videos, but I try to live stream once a week on my channel to give other builders their chance to be featured, :-)

wackomann reacted to AshleyAshes in Can you fit SODIMM memory into a standard DIMM Mobo? Yes, you can!
I started a thread about this some seven weeks ago, after finding SODIMM to DIMM adaptors on eBay for less than $5 each.  I asked if anyone had any info and I was met with some pretty stupid responses.  Actually, let's go over some of those responses shall we?

He really supplied firm backing for his opinion here.

"lmao that's not even a DDR3-style desktop connector. Looks a LOT more like regular DDR lmao lmaoooooo" -tmcclelland455

This guy doesn't seem to actually know what DDR3 looks like, but whatever.

The general concensus I received was that this was snake oil.  It would never work.  It's fake.  The photos are fake.  Don't bother.  I Googled a LOT and could not find a lot of information on them at ALL.  So I'll explain my use case.  I have 2x4GB of DDR3 SODIMM memory sitting in a package that was pulled from a laptop two years ago.  The laptop was upgraded to 2x8GB.  I was rebuilding my server and I could have spent about $50 to get 8GB of DDR for my server or I could pay $12.19 CAD with free shipping and I could use these SODIMM sticks in a desktop board.  I would save money AND recycle existing memory that was otherwise unused.  I liked this even though people thought it was bullshit.  So, about 7 weeks later they have arrived.  Free shipping from eBay from China tends not to be fast.  You get what you pay for...

Here are the SODIMMS in the DIMM adaptors that will 100% totally not work:

And here they are installed in an old Gigabyte P67A-UD3-B3 motherboard.  There is enough room that these adaptors will fit in all four slots without getting in the way of each other, not that that matters because they will never work.  If you're curious, there's an i5 2300 under that cooler.  It's a shame though, because this machine will surely not POST in this configuration.

Here is the computer failing to POST.  Ignore all this 'BIOS' you see, and the report on the CPU and the 8GB of detected RAM.  It's just confused and THINKS it POSTed with all memory detected.  It totally didn't POST.

Since it didn't POST, this is absolutely is not CPU-Z reporting on the specific model of the RAM which matches the RAM from the photo.  What actually happened was the SODIMM adaptors blew up my TV via the HDMI cable and somehow this is how the pixels got stuck.  Crazy, right?

In conclusion, yes, you can TOTALLY run laptop SODIMM memory via a very cheap adaptor in a desktop build.  Also, some people on tech forums have no idea what they are talking about but are sure something will not work just because they never heard of it and it sounds silly to them.  Frankly, SODIMM has less pins but some of the pins on DDR3 DIMMs are only used for ECC, some are 'N/C' or 'No Connection' and serve no purpose, and others are redundant and the SODIMM adaptor just has less redundant connections.  If you think about it, this makes PERFECT sense.  There are desktop boards with low powered mobile CPUs on them but have full DIMM memory slots.  There are also motherboards with desktop CPU slots but have SODIMM memory slots (A lot of ITX boards for example). So there's no real argument that they wouldn't work, excluding manufacturing defect, other than the belief in voodoo or evil spirits that control weather your computer works or not.
