  1. What are you on about? Edit: Did you try rooting a galaxy device and got stuck in a boot loop? Are you able to hold "Volume UP + Power + Home" while powered down to enter the recovery menu? Can you then factory reset the os?
  2. So I started talking to that friend about this again and he just sent me this:
  3. One of my friends swears he never closes Chrome and that he has many tens of tabs open 24/7. I only break double-digits when I'm doing deep research into a topic. Otherwise I close all my tabs that I'm not using. I might be in the minority though, I also have inbox 0.
  4. I totally missed the fact that it was DSL. I'm even less confident with my knowledge of DSL, so I'm going to leave this open for others to help.
  5. Would you mind sending a screenshot of what the effect looks like? Make sure there's no sensitive information in the image! From what I'm guessing, the icons are spread randomly around the screen with no rhyme or reason? If you right click the desktop and look through the 'view' and 'sort-by' menus, is there anything weird going on with the settings? Perhaps changing some of these setting will yield results.
  6. Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification. It's like the revision of the technology that translates the analog signal coming into the house from the coax cable to a digital signal that all other hardware on your network can communicate with. I'm not entirely sure how the technology even works. I should study it some more. All you need to know is that in 2006, DOCSIS 3.0 was introduced with enabled like 300 mbps connection speeds over cable.
  7. The Witness displays some of the best game design I've seen in a long time. It's got a lot of puzzles though and you might have to bring out the graph paper at times. http://store.steampowered.com/app/210970/The_Witness/
  8. Here's Windstreams statement on 3rd party modems: https://www.windstream.com/Support/3rd-Party-Broadband-DSL-Modem/ Also I found an unofficial list of modems compatible with windstream. http://www.approvedmodems.com/windstream.html I find it strange that there are only 2 modems listed. Also there are different DOCSIS standards for modems. I'm not entirely sure which version Windstream supports, but it's important to know which levels Windstream supports because it can impact what speeds are capable.
  9. I would recommend doing some more in-depth research on XDA. I was able to root my Samsung S7 SM-G930v (S7 Verizon) running Nougat 7.0 using the engineering rom, but it's still literally impossible to unlock the bootloader on the US Qualcomm variant. It's basically like a half-root where I can use root applications, but can't load a custom recovery like TWRP or anything because the bootloader is still locked. I'm extremely frustrated because the hardware is excellent, but Samsung struggles with software. The combination of Samsung and Verizon means even though there's a multi-thousand dollar bounty pool for anyone who can unlock the bootloader, it's locked down so well that it hasn't been claimed for years. Something like a Google Pixel or a Huawei flagship is a million times easier to root. It's a real shame. Also regarding downgrading firmware: Newer versions of the firmware are designed so that you can't downgrade. If it detects that you're trying to install an older version of the firmware, it will fail and give an error code. Since the bootloader is literally impossible to unlock, it's actually quite difficult to hard brick the device. You may encounter a soft brick in the form of a boot-loop or something similar. In that case all you have to do is go into the recovery menu and factory reset.
  10. I think what frustrates me most is that it still shouldn't make sense as a large business pricing out and purchasing cabinets. Why are the prices artificially inflated? It's the same argument that goes for the NES Classic, but in this case there's no artificial scarcity, only the price. NES Classic is an entirely different discussion now that I think about it more.
  11. Cage nuts seem like a pain. Are there any alternative mounting methods?
  12. like maybe 3 or more some day, a nas, router, switch, patch panel and a few extras. It's something I'm interested in getting into.
  13. It may be cheaper, but is it better? Using rails will allow me to slide cases out from any position in the cabinet without knocking over a stack of 100lb computers.
  14. Yeah I saw that, I should have payed closer attention to the name of the IKEA item.
  15. To start off, I Imagine this will be quite a long post, it's somewhat of a rant, and I don't really need anything right now so it's going to immediately turn of lots of people. That's fine. I just wanted to hear some feedback regarding my experience trying to find server cabinets for a future project I have in mind. This is a place for discussion after all. So bear with me. So I have this idea right. It's somewhat a dream of mine and I've spent a long time thinking of how to achieve this even if it will take a few years. I would like to somewhat follow in Linus' footsteps after he completed Personal Rig Update 2015(2016) and successfully utilized Optical Thunderbolt to move his personal rig out of the same room as his peripherals. I have a similar idea to that, but on an entirely different scale. My idea is this: I would like to source a 24-42u server cabinet/ enclosure, a server rack-mounted 4u case(which I will get multiples of), and multiple runs of 100ft Optical thunderbolt cable. I don't know if I will be in the same house when I finally start working on this project, but the issue still remains. I would clear a space in the basement to place the server cabinet, build a new personal rig and a few other high-performance computers, and finally run the Optical Thunderbolt upstairs to a room where all the peripherals will connect to a breakout box. This system can apply to multiple rooms in the house running off different computers. Each desk basically acting as a sort of terminal to each respective computer. This will allow the computers 4u's worth of space for housing high-performance components while taking up that space somewhere else entirely(in the server cabinet in the basement). The cabinet will not just house computers; I plan to create a home lab with full networking and a NAS. I probably spent more time than I should researching components and solutions for future reference. I managed to find a couple great options for 4u rackmount computer cases that are compatible with the parts I would like to use and might even have room for water cooling. The last piece of the puzzle in my mind is a cabinet to house everything. I thought this would be the easiest part because server cabinets are standardised and don't vary much from model to model... right? Also price wouldn't be an issue because it's just fabricated metal, they oftentimes don't even come with rails, sides, a door, or even casters........... right? <rant> So as I've spent a long time researching everything that will go in the cabinet, I've also spent a long time researching the cabinets themselves. I Immediately hit a wall because I started to see a pattern with the price. "Why is an 18u open-frame rack more than $500US? It doesn't even have rails, sides, a door, or even casters." You can see where I'm going with this. I was somewhat surprised to find that sites like Amazon and Newegg didn't have a large selection, but that's somewhat justified because those are more consumer-centric sites. So I started looking at sites like: rackmountsolutions .net, xcase .co.uk, servercase .co.uk, racksolutions .com (not to be confused with rackmountsolutions .net), superlogics .com, ebay and even my local craigslist. At this point I started getting frustrated. I just wanna find a 24-42u standard 19 inch 25-30 inch-deep cabinet to house my hobby. I can envision the bomb cost for most of these cabinets being under $100. So what gives? I've read about a dozen times about how building a cabinet can be a better solution than actually buying one by a company that specializes in building them. Like, actually what the fuck. Is the only reason why cabinets are so expensive because manufacturers artificially inflate the price because only large corporations and data centers purchase their products? This can't be the only reason can it? There's no monopoly/ oligopoly with server cabinet manufacturers. Where's the competition? The only way to find reasonably priced enclosures that I've heard of so far is to find ones that aren't being used anymore; Surplus, unused, no longer needed, being sold for less than half their original value. And it's still kind of overpriced. I should stop. </rant> I'm interested to hear what others think of the situation and I'm open to suggestions regarding a better server cabinet solution, or a better solution overall with this project-in-the-making. Here's the cases I'm looking at: ARK IPC-4570 Black Nice design, built well, reasonable price. Rosewill RSV-L4000 Slightly longer, more fans, room for water cooling? Here's a cabinet I kinda like, too bad it's expensive: Tripp Lite 24U Blaaaaack, sweet-spot size, fully-enclosed, expensive :c tl;dr Why are server rack-mount cabinets enclosures so expensive?
  16. What is the size/resolution of your current monitor? Are you running Windows? I ask these questions because if you like the 100% display scale size of your current monitor (ex 24" 1080p 91ppi) a 1440p 27" monitor is 108ppi. UI elements will appear slightly smaller in comparison, but you will have a lot more screen real estate. For reference a 24" 1440 screen will be 122ppi and you might find it necessary to use 125% scaling in windows.
  17. I don't know if this is the most-optimal setup, but I like having an Antivirus suite paired with an Anti-Malware program. I'm currently running Kaspersky and Malwarebytes. I haven't used Kaspersky's VPN service, but I know they call it something weird like "Secure Connect" Malwarebytes is mostly free, Kaspersky is not. It's been a long time since I've seen a worth-while, free antivirus. If you can find one or take one of the other suggestions from this thread that fits your needs, then great, use that.
  18. I'm starting to lean more and more towards planning to purchase that Mario Black/White package @djdwosk97 mentioned. The price seems too good to be true. Where can I get some details about it? Can I order online?
  19. Will the Super Mario Black/White New 3DS be just like a stock one, but perhaps with a removable faceplate? Also I've heard that even though it may seem like Nintendo is consolidating their home and portable console divisions, they're still going to be developing for portable. Do you think they're trying to merge the two starting with the switch and for the future to come?
  20. It's been a really long time since I've done any mobile gaming. 'Mobile gaming' not in the sense of smartphone games, but rather any type of portable consoles like the DS lineup from Nintendo. The last time I've taken part in portable gaming was more than 6 years ago with the release of the Nintendo DSi. I quite enjoyed the experience and found the design of the DS to be interesting and unique. Later I sold it on my local Craigslist because I wasn't using it as much, but that's a different story. Later even, I started building computers, found this community, then started gaming more on the PC. Now my interest in Nintendo has sparked again after the recent release of Pokémon Sun/Moon. That got me thinking, I've missed out on such DS exclusives as: Mario Kart 7, Legend of Zelda, Monster Hunter, Fire Emblem, and many others. Surely as a gamer I should do my civil duty and experience these as well? That led me to spend some time researching the best skew of portable console and weigh my options. I found that the old DSi was replaced by the 3DS, and now it seems that as of about 2 years ago the 3DS was also improved upon with the release of the 'New' 3DS. Also worth mentioning are the 3DS XL and 2DS (but I'm not terribly interested in those). So I decided to see where I could purchase the 'new' 3DS from (retailers/ resellers) and what the current prices were. THIS is where I'm running into some issues. It seems that (in the US/NA at least) the "regular sized" 'new' 3DS can only be purchased as part of a package like the Animal Crossing thing that comes with the game and some funny looking covers among other things. Q: Can the "regular sized" 'new' 3DS be purchased as one piece (not part of a package) in the US/NA? Then this also got me thinking: The 'new' 3DS is pushing 2 years now and there is the chance that another revision is in the works. As a PC enthusiast it isn't too surprising that I'm a no-compromises kinda guy. Q: Should I wait for what's next? Q: Are alternatives to portable gaming worth looking into? I like the Idea of carrying around a Razer Blade, but the skew I want is pushing $2000 (not really an option) As always: I'll try to watch this thread closely and reply/ answer questions as the discussion goes on.
  21. I've always been in the minority when it comes to earbuds/earphones. I quite like the Intra-Concha earphones style that just sits within the inner bowl of the ear, but I haven't been able to find any that are designed well and are durable, more so than the ipod earphones. I've been purchasing some $30 ones that seem to only last 9 months to a year at most; I can't keep doing that. I like the comfort and 'open back' effect that the Intra-Concha style has that allows me to hear everything around me so I don't accidentally ignore people who are trying to talk to me or get run over by a car or something when walking around outside. I don't want to compromise comfort and my ability to hear my surroundings just to have a quality pair of in-ears. I've just purchased some Steelseries Flux In-Ear Pros that I quite like the aesthetics of as well as the swappable cable, over-ear cable run, and the balanced armature design. The only drawback - and I mean only - is that I don't like that it drops the ambient sound by what sounds like 10-15db when worn properly. I'm afraid that I'll be that guy that you have to tap his shoulder to talk to when he has his headphones in, just to get his attention. I was wondering if there are some crazy workarounds for this other than taking one ear out. Perhaps something like a fabric ear-tips or maybe even drilling a precise hole in the back of the plastic, closed-back to let more sound waves in. I would like to hear everyone's opinion on this, link me to anything you think might be a solution or add to the conversation. Edit: I know why sound isolation is important, but for my use these are only for taking out of the house.
  22. I don't know much about custom routers, but I think anything is better than the all-in-one Xfinity Wifi Router thingy they've had for about a year or two. By default they broadcast an open guest ssid which, like you said, doesn't seem very secure.
