  1. pretty sure no one will see this but just for archive sake(i hate when i find a forum post with the exact question i got and the person doesn't reply in the end to say what worked.) been running my 7700k at 5.10GHz@1.480V ever since this post, been using my pc around 60h/week on average. it didn't blew up, but i did end-up with somes problems recently. Here's the story of the 7700k that last his life running at 1.480V ->the first instance of instability get back to about 10month ago, my pc kept crashing in random circonstances, like when i would play a game and do precicely somes thing it would crash, and game that i could make it crash the most relibely was Bloons TD 6 so it wasn't because it's a super cpu intensive game. so i ended up dropping my overclock to 5.00GHz didn't changed the 1.480V it wasn't crashing after that so i chucked it to "i ran too close to the sun and burnt my self" thinking my cou had degraded. ->about 2weeks ago, i get to open my pc and it just doesn't post at all, i unplug everything(there was the aio pump, 2 fans, the 24pin, the 8pin cpu, display port, mouse and keyboard plugged in that's it) didn't started, tryed to do a CMOS reset not working so i really thought my cpu died. now i received a new cpu(i3 7350k) and it still doesn't work so i'm now thinking that it's probably my motherboard, i was so focused on the stress the overclock put on the cpu that i overlocked all the tiny components on the board that could of die the same way. so in the end, as a resume, i still don't know for sh*t if my cpu degraded or if it was just my motherboard that started to break 10month ago and finaly died 2weeks ago... will buy a new motherboard to confirm soon lmao p.s. for those looking into using an overclock like this daily, don't you'll break stuff in the most random ass moment and you'll endup like me waiting for parts for a couples weeks because when it endup breaking it's not available anywhere at a resonable price exept for ebay with 2-4weeks shiping... smh. Or if you do endup reading this and still do it, then you'll be warned, you'll definately endup degrading your components faster and they will need replacements faster. p.p.s. for those not tracking time, i bought this setup 6 years ago, 5years ago i started doing overclock and when i made this original post(4years ago) my pc had been runing at 1.480V for about 6month already so it took about 4-5years for something to break(depending if you count the initial problem 10month ago or not), considering that a pc that doesn't get overclock have an average life span of about 8-12years(let's say 10 for easy number) it means i reduced the life of my pc by about half by running it on the bleading edge.
  2. Thanks, cable also come in a bunch of different colors also wich i really like since i'm TRYING to make it look as good as those picture posted by IT Professionals with all the colored cables comming from the seitch perfectly cable managed(i'm kind of a freak about cable management, love it with all the passion of my heart, would love to do this for a living) also, i've seen that the cable is cat6A and the specs are the same as cat7, what's the difference between the 2? because if cat6A is the same, it will help the cost and choice i have a lot hahah and as for the tools, are there anything else than a crimper, a punch and a cable tester that i will need?
  3. Budget (including currency): 1500$ CAD Country: Canada Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Backup/Gaming-NAS/Storage-NAS Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Hi, i'm looking into swaping my jank 3 normal pc used as nas with no ethernet switch for a "professional" Grade Server Rack. i already have most the Hardware as for the performence side of thing, but when it come to networking, i'm a complete noob. so i need; -about 1000ft of ethernet cable cat7(for 10gbps) -connectors -keystone -tools needed to install everything -a good 10gbps switch with 5-8 ports i'm from Quebec Canada and all the brands that people recomend on reddit are either only available trough resellers that only sell to other company or i find some on amazon but it look more like a knock off version of the real product than the real thing. so i'm wondering do you know a website that could sell all these thing directly to a customers? do you have any brands to recomend me for all the parts i needs? p.s. the budget is more of an idea than a hard limit, if i need to blow the budget i will lmao p.p.s. picture are there to show some of the hardware i've got already p.p.p.s. when i said "gaming-NAS" in the workload description, this will be a NAS Server on wich i install my steam game. i already have a server doing this for the last 3 years and it's working great(game in 1080p60hz not sure if it could hold up to higher resolution but i don't really care).
  4. Thank you soo much for your help i'm gonna look with the freenas forum because i don't have a really beefy hardware beside my gaming pc so i don't think the iscsi will work on my core 2 Quad for now, i will "make it work" with what i got but Yes in the end i would love to get a server for all this but as you said, that cost a lot so in the mean time, i'm gonna do with what i have dx) Also, i did try somes games, all of those i tried would at the very least go to the menu without problem(didn't try in game with most of those i've tried, didn't had time) and i've tried GTA V for a couples minutes and i was getting my full 60fps all maxed setting in 1080p(V-Sync ON so i'm lock at 60fps) didn't see any drop, seams to run perfectly
  5. TL;DR i have problem installing games on a shared Raid partition from an other PC. so I have multiples PC in my gaming room and i would like to install steam on a couples of them all logged in with my accound(wouldn't play the same game on more than 1 pc) and install the games on a separate NAS. i've tried and i get error while installing them, not all games does this, somes install just fines without any problem and somes get stuck always at the exact same point, i've tried uninstall and reinstall, even tried to uninstall them, did a ''disk clean-up'', a defrag of the partition and even opened the cmd as admin, did a '/chkdsk /f /r''(restarted the pc for it to do his work even though it only did the C disk im sure but i wanted to put every chance on my side), and after all that reinstalled the game, it get stuck at the exact same place. at some point i started to think that the raid of the partition i use to stock the games might be somewhat defective even though i tested all disk days before building the said NAS(wich i've build this week so they have been tested very recently, should be working perfectly) anyway so i started backing up somes others files somewhat importent stored on the raid and it's copying files at 200MB/s(maxed out by the HDD in non-raid speed) without any interuptions or any slowdown, so the raid seams to not have any problem. i am mostly wondering if others person have the same setup and/or the same problem and if they were able to solve it, otherwise, if you have an idea, PLEASE let me know because i have no clue and i don't want to start seting up a second pc for files sharing if games over lan won't work after all xD Alright for those needing more specifications, what i have is: NAS- Core 2 Quad 2GB of RAM(1GB in used only),windows 10 pro 32 Bit(don't know why i wasn't able to install the 64Bit, anyway, don't really need it since all this pc is doing is the NAS position so it's just stocking files and only has 2GB of ram), the windows is installed on a 2.5'' 7'200RPM 320GB HDD(also tested at the same time as ALL my others driver, just mooved in so i wanted to make sure they didn't get damaged in the transport). I also have a 3.5'' 7'200 RPM 2TB HDD(seagate iron wolf i think) as a ''Safe Storage'' and a Raid 0(at the Bios Level) of 3 3.5'' 7'200RPM 1TB HDD as a ''Temporary Semi-Fast Storage/Games Storage''. Main Gaming PC- i7 7700k, 32GB of RAM, SSD 256GB Samsung 850 Evo for the windows and 5 SSD Kingston V300 120GB in Raid 0(Bios Level) as ''Fast Temporary Storage'' to install the games, what i did is i shared the 2TB HDD and the 3TB Raid 0 giving Full permission to everyone on every disk, got all the file sharing working perfectly on both my gaming pc and my NAS and after all that, i just started to the top of my Steam library and installed all 86 Games(well allocating the space and adding them to the queue). didn't had any problem so far with all 86 games. it's when the game start installing, i got 77 out of 86 installed WITHOUT ANY Problem what so ever. but somes times i would check at the bottom of the list, remove the already finie=shed installing ones and notice that 1 or 2 games that have tried to install had problem at somes point and are waiting for me to restart them. i would just restart them, go back to the top and come back a couples hours later and the same games i've sent to restart, they are back and stuck with the same amount of data downloaded while others games had installed just fines after that. i'restart one of them and watch it while having the task manager on the NAS open, when it get Stuck, network and disk usage just drop to idle, steam stay stuck for somes times, bump out the ''faulty Game'' and skip to the next one(who was Dirt 4) and INSTANTLY on the NAS task manager, Network goes to 1gb/s(maxed out the Switch/motherboard gigabit port) and Disk usage just follow what ever the network in giving him(about 10-30% of disk usage wich is normal since the RAID is running at around 500MB/s when maxed out). Side Note, it's even weirder when i saw that somes games have one ''copy'' of the game installing just fine while the other one isn't(see photo of my game list, the ''RUST'' Games). I ALSO DIDN'T TRIED PLAYING YET! well not all games at the very least, didn't had any problem with the game This far, i will Edit the Post if i found some who has problem. Final Goal, i would want about 3 gaming PC(i have my main gaming one and all the parts for a second one and a Laptop wich i've extracted the mobo and install in a WII(with CD working) and i would let space for my friends pc when they come over and would like if they could just add my shared library and not having to install games :P) and i would have the NAS i'm setuping Now, i would also have like 2 other NAS, one for Reliable Fast Storage(a bunch of SSD in Raid 5 or 6) and one for Archive(Tones of Terrabytes of Storage :D) i basicaly have everything exept for details like cable long enough to put the pc where i want and the Storage Part for the Archive, i'm planning on buying a bunch of WD RED drives and if i have the budget, one of those 45 drives chassis to make all this look Slick. Might also in a Near futur add a Surveillance system but it's gonna be compleatly separate from the rest, not connected to the internet so it's not gonna interfere(I think) IF you have any Questions or anything i didn't specified that you'd like to know, just tell me and i'll enter in more details and more pictures for you :P
  6. that's a good option, didn't taught about that one, do you think a R3 1200 would do the trick? as i said, his only task will be to run OBS and all the heavy work is done by a GPU.... i'm more interested in finding the weakest possible cpu that will be able to run the stream without problem xD I also have somes Core 2 Quad pc, do you think that by putting a good GPU in them i would be able to stream?
  7. Quick/Short version: I need to buy an intel cpu of 6th or 7th Gen to fit in the board i'm planning on using. THIS PC WILL ONLY DO THE STREAMING AND RECORDING PART! i will game on an other pc. i was wondering, since OBS use now more than ever the GPU for the heavy work, i've seen that obs use only arround 2-6% of my 7700k. So do you think i could go for like an i3 or that will be too week?(was thinking of the i3 7350k or the 6th gen i3 version of it) Detailed/Long Version) So the other day, my psu blewup on what was supposed to become my streaming(only) pc and after borrowing a psu from my job, it seams like my cpu also went down(tried it on 2 different board) so now, since i don't really want to replace the cpu(it's an FX 6300), i have a z170 intel board so i was thinking of using that board but when i got to choose the cpu to use, i started to question my self. Since this pc will only run OBS and nothing else and OBS now use Nvidia GPU for 99% of the heavy workload, do i really need an i7? i have an i7 7700k for my gaming pc and when i game while streaming, obs use only like 10% of my cpu, do you think an i3 of like 6th or 7th Gen will do the trick? i was planning on buying like a GTX 980 used for the heavy workload since my GTX 980 ti has ZERO Problem with gaming, streaming and recording at the same time so the 980 should do the job perfectly.(i Also have a GT 1030, i think i will try it just to see what kind of resolution this little thing can stream(if it can stream at all xD), i'm curious)
  8. Quick Update, I DID Got it to 5.2GHz WITHOUT changing ANY hardware, i disabled Hyper Threading and it passed a cinebench r15 twice and a cinebench r20 all of them in a row, it's now passing a pcmark extended since that's where it seams to crash for somes most of my OC when i try to get it stable. it doesn't go over 75c max peak, it's mostly arroynd the 70c while cinebench r20 is running The reason why i disabled Hyper Threading is because of the new Zombieload thing so i tought "Naaah just to be safe why not" and i also watched the performence hit and for what i do, i shouldn't really see a difference BUT With all of that said, i would love to get it working with hyper threading because the benchmark do use Hyper Thread a lot *Edit* i even got it to 5.3GHz fully stable at 1.504V without hyper threading
  9. but you just CAN NOT compare to the i9 9900k... it's not at all the same number of cores, not at all the same architecture, not at all the same Base clock... it's 2 generations older and you sre comparing an i9 with soldered ihs with an i7 2 generations older... also i don't care what i am risking if it break, it break, what's the big deal? i won't die just because i can't use my pc for a couples of days...
  10. i don't think it has degraded since i am now able to run it higher, faster and more stable than i ever had it and i never had to increase the voltage to maintain the same frequency after a while but of course it's 90% about silicon lottery and 5% about the hardware choice and 4% about skills and 1% about random luck i might never be able to push it to 5.2GHz even with a full custom cooling but it's kind of a mini-dream i had to overclock it 1GHz over Base clock ?
  11. i am monitoring my voltage at all time and it doesn't drop, in fact, they doesn't seems to be that bad, although when i touch the heatsink for the vrm, it's pretty hot at my 5.1GHz setup maybe when i set it to 1.5v 5.2GHz the VRM heat to much and maybe at this point it start dropping and since i push it to it's limit, anything under 1.5v result in an instant crash, maybe? That would be my theory, i have just bought 4x40mm other fans like the one i have on my ram and i am going to put them on the vrm, see if it makes any difference and by the time it get to my home i am gonna try to tweak that load line calibration maybe it's the problem, we will see ? thanks for the tips, i'm gonna keep you informed ?
  12. the only reason why i am not is because i pay the electricity bill, once i will find a place to live with electricity lncluded on the rent i will for sure maybe not for this but i will put this pc to help with medical research
  13. i've once thaught about that but i would like to get it with "conventional" cooling ? but thanks i might try just for the LOL just to see how high i can push it without going LN2 i am more looking for bios setting that could help for stability when set correctly, i know you can tweek the cache ratio but i did zero reserch on it's impact but anyway ?
  14. thanks yeaah it's huge, if you watch closely, my forth screen doesn't even fit on the desk Power wise, that's not a problem, it has an 8 pin connector with a 850watt psu i am no where near the limit power wise, even with gpu overclocked and ram it use max 450watts and i am stretching it?
  15. i don't really meant to run it 24/7, for that i am going to buy a full custom watercooling loop but before that, i just want to be able to run a benchmark and have a score that say 5.2GHz. it's purely for the personal record xd
