MattLifewalker reacted to Master Disaster in Starlink public beta soon.
Satellite broadband always has terrible latency, its just a by product of the method. The issue is radio waves having to get all the way to space, be bounced around in space a few times before being sent back to a traditional DNS server to be processed in the usual way then having to do it all again on the reverse journey back to you.

Mobile broadband has a higher latency than fibre and that relies on masts dotted around the planets surface, just think how much further it is to get to a satellite.

I believe, like the author of the ZDnet article, that a lot of the accounts are people who use the same credentials on multiple sites.
If username and passwords leak from one site, and you use the same for this, then Disney+ is compromised "by proxy".

Moral of the story: Don't reuse passwords on multiple sites.

MattLifewalker reacted to RejZoR in XBox Game Pass for PC - The Netflix of games (low price)
I hate the idea of games as a service. Games aren't like movies where it's absolutely identical on every run so you basically watch it once and forget about it. Where games can be entirely different experience for several runs. And if you like modding and simply prefer to actually own things, this just isn't it. But I can see it being popular among normies who treat games like I treat movies. They play them through once and forget about them. For them, this will be great as it would probably end up being cheaper.

Not sure I understand what you mean by this. Go on about what exactly?
When? How? Where? Show me. I'm asking you too @MattLifewalker. I'm no douchebag. If I'm a bit of a douchebag, I see that as okay. For one, I'm only human. And two, chicks love dudes who are a bit of a douchebag. I can only be real with you dude. Telling you something you want to hear is unhealthy for ya'.

Bottom line, a hot deal is something you get. You get it. Now if you could be so kind as to showing me a single hot deal from GOG that you got today, I'll be sure to applaud you for it. I'd even be interested in watching your game play, whether it's recorded or a live stream.

I hope these issues aren't going to turn out too big, or at least be able to be fixed with software (that doesn't lower the performance much), otherwise Intel will be somewhat screwed..
Or it turns out AMD also has these issues and it's evenly bad for both parties.

MattLifewalker reacted to Nowak in Microsoft to ship full Linux kernel within Windows 10
Yes, you read that title right.

    Sauce: https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/6/18534687/microsoft-windows-10-linux-kernel-feature

Because obviously just Windows Subsystem for Linux and OpenSSH support wasn't enough, Microsoft will soon ship a full Linux kernel in Windows 10.

Based on kernel 4.19, this will appear in Windows Insiders builds coming this summer.

You'll still have to install a userspace via the Windows Store to use the kernel, but this marks the first time that Microsoft, which has historically called Linux a "cancer" and produced hit pieces against Linux, will include Linux in Windows. This obviously is meant for developers, but since a kernel is now native to Windows, this should improve performance of WSL.

Also, yes, it will be updated via Windows Update, it will be open source, and the source code will be released in compliance with the GPL. Developers will also be encouraged to contribute their own changes to the kernel.

Again, this is the same company that used to call Linux a "cancer" and actively resisted its proliferation in the workplace. Now they're embracing it to the point where they're including the kernel within Windows 10. Thoughts? Concerns? Screams of agony? Should Microsoft replace the NT kernel with the Linux kernel and finally usher in the Year of the Linux Desktop?

MattLifewalker reacted to 79wjd in Apple Watch has another record quarter as Wearable market hits $5.1Billion
I played around with a Gear S3 and Sport for a couple weeks as I'm also not the biggest fan of the Apple Watch aesthetics. I especially like the navigation ring, but I found the S3 to be too bulky (and also a bit....toyish looking) while the Sport just had an odd squircle (square-circle) design choice.

At the end of the day, I'd say they're just as good as the Apple Watch -- the S3 being awesome because it supports MST (which would be really nice given the horrible NFC support in the US). But Apple doesn't allow Samsung Pay to work, so that (along with the overall bulk of the S3 and no real pro to the Sport) pushed me to the Series 3 Apple Watch.

MattLifewalker got a reaction from XR6 in Why did you buy an Android phone?
I just moved from iPhone to Android last month. I went from a 5s to an S9. I had been wanting to make the jump for a couple years. Apple just hasn't excited me with anything they have been putting out and i especially don't agree with their anti consumer practices. I didn't enjoy owning a device that required me to live within an controlled ecosystem. I am a customer not livestock! Freedom to use the device how I see fit is such a huge advantage. Owning an Android phone is like a breath of fresh air. I can customize it to my liking and load whatever apps i want. The things i can do with this phone out of the box would require me to jailbreak my iPhone, but even then i still wouldn't be able to do everything my S9 does. Apple would have to change their entire game for me to switch back.

I have never experienced that with a headset. My experience is just from playing guitar in a band. RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) can be caused by a number of things. Poorly shielded cable, Unbalanced connection, or a ground problem. Maybe try some aluminum foil wrapped around the cable or near the mic? Somebody else here might have more experience with this.

MattLifewalker reacted to Cheezdoodlez in Rumor: Apple might ditch the lightning port in favor of USB C for the next iPhone in 2019
I'm all for USB-C on everything. It would be great in so many ways. Would eliminate the issue with incompatible chargers when visiting friends for starters. And if Apple would start pushing USB-C hard it would quickly grow in popularity.

But I have a hard time seeing Apple ditching lightning anytime soon. The switch from 30-pin to lightning was a bit painful for people invested in the Apple-ecosystem. But the switch from lightning to USB-C would be even worse. Almost everything Apple makes have a lightning port these days. It's kinda the USB-C dream we all have only limited to Apple products. They are far too invested in lightning to suddenly ditch it. Not to mention there is no real benefit to switch connector since lightning is fine as is.

On the other hand ditching the USB-A connector on the other end of the iPhone cable makes perfect sense. They are walking away from the USB-A connector on their computers so why not make the iPhone able to connect to your new macbook straight from the box? Not to mention it would kinda fit in a "USB-C all the things, except our cables have a Apple-only end also".
