GrandFatMan got a reaction from soldier_ph in "small" data centre heats a swimming pool in the UK
Summary
A public swimming pool is being heated by a small data centre in the UK. It's about the size of a washing machine and can provide the pool with temperatures up to 30c.
Quotes
My thoughts
What I find interesting here is the fact it's submerged in mineral oil. It doesn't leave much room for troubleshooting, but I find it a little interesting that LMG have been speaking about heating pools with computers, and also the recent discussion on a new submerged system. I wonder if this could be scaled at all.

GrandFatMan got a reaction from pixxel-latte in I accidentally bought a membrane keyboard....
So, me being an absent minded fool, I accidently went and bought a Corsair k55 RGB Pro, in replacement of my aukey kmg3 with blue switches. And, I feel so absolutley disgusted that, I think I prefer it. It was expensive for a membrane keyboard but, I didn't know. I got it out of the pack, typed for a bit, and went "ooh, I like these keyswitches" and pulled off a keycap to see what colour the stem was. And I was heartbroken to find out it was a membrane keyboard. Then I thought to myself, does it matter if I like how it feels? It's much more comfy to type on.
I got mixed up because I was looking at a different model and picked up the wrong box in store. But I thought i'd try it to see if I liked it. It made me think, maybe we have this perception that "X is better than Y because Z person said so" and I've tried and used a lot of keyboards. I really like this one.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

GrandFatMan reacted to IPD in I accidentally bought a membrane keyboard....
Agree with OP. Membrane keyboards have a bad rap because of gatekeeping elitism. Maybe 20 years ago there was a pretty big performance gulf between membrane and mechanical. Those days are gone.
Moreover, membrane keyboards usually provide all of the desired tactile and auditory traits--out of the box--without having to research down the rabbit hole of key switches. I personally prefer silent red's because they have similar characteristics to membrane--albeit with an undoubtedly longer lifespan.
That's why I cringe whenever I see yet another "I need a mechanical keyboard for <$100 or <$50" thread on here. Because chances are that a good membrane keyboard will suit this user sublimely--and they're simply asking for the moon because they don't know better. Gatekeeping elitism is to blame for that.

It's almost as mechanical keyboards aren't the be all and end all of keyboards! I personally find them disgusting to type on, give me a chiclet-laptop style keyboard any day of the week.
I have a Logitech K270 on one of my PCs, quite literally the cheapest wireless keyboard from a reputable manufacturer, and... I actually like it. The keys are wobbly AF, it creaks when you breathe near it, and it has so much deck flex, but it's so comfortable to type on.
Plus, I know it sounds stupid, but I feel like I work harder when I'm using a cheap membrane keyboard, it brings back memories of being at school using those crappy Dell and HP keyboards, sitting in the library trying to get homework done 5 minutes before it's due!

GrandFatMan got a reaction from Needfuldoer in Acronis using ltt clip in advertising.
It's not always the case and linus has even said in the past he doesn't like it, and to let it be known its happening if you find it. I found one a while back where LG were using a clip from a sponsored video in their advertising across the UK social media platforms. I tweeted it to linus, and he said he'd deal with it, I never saw those ads again after that.

GrandFatMan got a reaction from LogicalDrm in Cutting an RGB wire on a waterblock, is there going to cause an issue?
a cut cable is the same as just unplugging it, Just make sure it is "terminated" somehow with tape to stop it shorting.

GrandFatMan got a reaction from PeachGr in LTT Boston Dynamics Spot Fund.
LTT has over 11.2 million subscribers.
If just a miniscule fraction of that would have to donate just $1 each to enable them to purchase Spot. IMAGINE the content! Explained my reasoning in the fundraiser!
Thanks!

GrandFatMan got a reaction from Ben17 in LTT Store merch on Amazon?
Hello Everyone.
I'm not sure how it is there in Canada, But have LMG considered using Amazon fullfilment for their merch? Here in the UK I know from personal experience, you can literally just ship a box of product to Amazon, set your pricing, and they deal with the fullfilment and customer service. Obviously keep LTT store too, but it could be another avenue?

Fair enough, I get that. If I didn't have to deal with another SQL database in my life, I think I would be okay with that.

GrandFatMan got a reaction from Limotoras in LTX 2018 Coverage??
Thanks @nicklmg Yeah i've scoured for as much footage as I could, and saw Brandon with the RED rig, so I assumed there was at least something. Long I hope?

GrandFatMan got a reaction from Limotoras in LTX 2018 Coverage??
Hi guys,
I guess this isn't necessarily aimed at the users, more the LTT Team, but will there be any footage / coverage coming from LTT for LTX?
(Fun Fact: I still spell necessarily using a Mnemonic: Never Eat Cake, Eat, Sausage, Sandwiches [ remembering if it's two C's or not ])
