That drive is a good one WD greens are good as well. But that one will work very well for desktop file storage!

They have already tried updating windows and they are using an SSD to boot. So it wouldn't be either of those issues @Matty2048 and @AngusBrown unless his SSD is failing which wouldn't make sense because the rest of the boot up is working fine.

The answers to your questions are both yes. However, I would HIGHLY recommend going to Ryzen or waiting for Ryzen v2 rather than staying on the FX series. What exactly would you be planning on doing (or what do you do with your system)? Since you are already buying a new motherboard, I would definitely go to something like a B350 chipset and pair it with even a Ryzen 3, which will be leaps and bounds ahead of the FX 8350. And won't cost you a whole lot more.

I would say this is a software issue. Does your GPU go to 100% fan regardless of if a curve is applied? I would also recommend trying out a different program to set a fan curve if possible. Also what are the other componets of your system?
