My mom's ex-bf was helping with a computer upgrade since she knew nothing about pc's and he had built his own for ~$700 that "was a beast" or some shit. Mind you, this guy was a neckbeard creep ebay collector type of person in his late 30s, makes this story a lot more entertaining/sad. He ended up swapping out our 2 RAM sticks with some unused RAM he had, quoting what was said to me. I think maybe like, 6-8 months later or less, we started having major virtual memory issues for everything that was running fine prior to this (games). I don't think I noticed it as much since I was mostly outdoors up until after the RAM switch. Anyway..
PC was on it's last limbs at some point and I was trying to figure out what needed to be replaced (PSU was failing). This is when I first started getting to know hardware for computers. One of the many things I tried doing was taking out the RAM, and I noticed something peculiar. 128mb and 256mb RAM modules inserted. Was weird because they were mismatched, completely different manufacturers (one was taiwanese, the other Corsair) and I was quite sure that we had 2x 512mb in there..
So, either that cunt stole our 1GB of RAM or he had no idea what he was doing. I'm going with the former because of how fucked up he was. He and my mother had broken up years and years ago but every now and then he'd call up and sexually harrass my mother, eventually starting to threaten her in early to mid 2012. This happened up until like, November of 2012, where I said she needs to stop talking to him and enabling him and if he came over, even if she wanted him to, I'd be kicking his ass.
So yeah, long story short: Tech noob mother allows creepy, sadistic neckbeard boyfriend to "upgrade" our RAM, ends up swapping our 1GB for less than 512mb of RAM. Not sure if literally trolling, or just stupid.

Grave got a reaction from JohhCheese in SLI & Crossfire in the Same PC at the Same Time??
Posted some of this this on the video, but for the sake of avoiding Youtube to give Linus my thoughts on the subject more directly, I'm posting here as well.
I don't really know what I expected out of this video, but I've said before that we're getting to the point where GPUs are obsolete. They're big, they're getting bigger it feels like, and yet everything else seems to want to get smaller. I've been thinking to myself what NVidia would do if APUs were much more powerful. It seems to be a step in the right direction when thinking about the future of GPUs, but I can't think of a single solution to that problem. The best I can do is predict the death of GPUs and APUs becoming widely adopted, which would kill off GeForce Experience benefits anyway.
With that being said, I will also add in that I think that it's way more beneficial to assume that AMD is actually taking the right route. If APUs get big, and they look like it right now, NVidia will be eating dirt. A lot of the features of GeForce Experience are already being shown elsewhere. It's only a matter of time before AMD is the way to go, and eventually we won't have anymore "X vs X" arguments. I've said it before and I'll say it again.. The latest generation of consoles came at a bad time. People knew that a lot of what the 360/PS3 had that was unique was very compatible with PC (namely the online multiplayer and the controllers but recording videos as well, for example).
PS4/XBO weren't unique or powerful enough to compete with PC, which had a good, what, 7-8 years to develop even further? They failed to really utilize the advancement in technologies across the board and really f---ed up on the future tech, which PCs are almost always prepared for. 4k/2160p isn't really out or even popularized yet but we can already use it. 1440p is practically skipped and 1080p is child's play for a consumer-grade pc, let alone higher end ones which seem to be getting cheaper/easier to buy by the second. Peripherals are getting better, cheaper and more available from different people yet Microsoft wants to market their XBO-only controller (that I really wish was usable on PC, very good controller) to console users for upwards of $60-70 if I remember correctly. Sony is a bit different in that aspect but I think their console is featureless and far less prepared for the market when it was launched. It has only games and I've always thought quality over quantity seeing as 90% of the general population will not purchase tens or hundreds of games throughout their console's lifespan, unless you include trade-ins.
So, that leaves us with PCs for the future, unless consoles somehow get really, really good and the next generation are being released in 2016. IF that ends up happening, I expect a pointless price hike that is undesirable to most people while the PC probably would be looking fit for a big jump in sales (yet again). The steam machine/box/gabecube is a weird thing, but mostly because it's the console pricepoint-type of prebuilt thing that's aimed directly at gamers. It's really good because it'll remove people from the Mac/HP/Dell/etc. prebuilt market that only wanted to play some games (and really can't now) on the PC. It'll help out with awareness of computer games as well, so I don't hate it or think it's a stupid idea when almost anyone can build their own computer for cheaper usually.
Bringing it back to AMD versus NVidia to finish the post up, I stated in my 2nd paragraph that AMD is literally going to shut down NVidia in graphics unless NVidia changes. I'm talking like, super long-term, 20+ years from now type of stuff. People will still buy dedicated cards and build larger machines for a long while, mostly because of the amount of time it'll take for things to transition to Gigabyte Brix-sized computers (way of the future, the way of the future..). Small isn't exactly better, but if we can lower the thermal output on devices that are as strong as current-day computers at a significantly smaller size, there's absolutely no reason we won't see something the size of the average modem being the "gaming" or general entertainment standard. Like I said, we're getting most/all of the features in GeForce Experience for free in the future, at least at some point. Tack on all the new technologies we've seen in the last 6-8 months or so along with upcoming ones, and I see GPUs dying off so quickly. We need something smaller, more portable and modular, and an 11.5"x5.5"x3"* PCI-E graphics card is definitely not gonna work.

Looking at the price, it's for people with lots of money to blow. Possibly for the EVGA fanboy as well, or someone concerned about aesthetics enough that they're willing to drop almost half a grand on a non-server board.
Trust me when I say I've never heard of anyone compliment EVGA on their superb quality over other high-end motherboards. It's no different, aside from maybe PCB layers (I have never checked this board-to-board) and their supposedly high gold content, which sounds more like a reason to charge so much more than something that is actually worth $100-200 over the competition. This, to me, has been the case with almost every EVGA motherboard anyway.
    Just my two cents.

Grave got a reaction from Bagmup in GTX 760 vs R9 270X
    The R9 270X is a 7870 Ghz Edition while the GTX 760 is closer to a 7950.
Atm, either one is ok/worth their price but take this into consideration:
R9 280X is supposed to be like, the go-to cheapest card for 1440p gaming that you can get away with w/o sacrificing too much performance. The GTX 770, its NVidia mirror so-to-speak, is a bit less favorable for 1440p gaming but guarantees 1080p. It's also cheaper (or was).
So now you're thinking, if the 270X is a slightly boosted midrange card for ~$180, the 760 is the entry-level enthusiast card, the 770 maxes out any game at 1080p and the 280X is the entry level 1440p gaming card, why did AMD release the R9 280? To compete with the GTX 760?
There's a good reason for it, besides maybe to compete with the GTX 760. The R9 280 is actually specced like the 280X and is much closer to the 280X than it is to the R9 270X (go figure..).

If you consider the fact that the R9 280X was only slightly not worth buying at its inflated price of $305-$330 and the R9 280 is ranging between $220 and $260 commonly (that "AMD drops R9 280 price to $250" news thing is actually old btw, Newegg/Amazon had them on sale for lower for weeks), it's a steal. The biggest difference between the R9 280 and 280X, if I'm remembering correctly, is that the 280X is superior at texture fill rates and its memory bandwidth. However, the R9 280 is so damn close to it that it's basically the welfare 1440p card, figuratively speaking.
To simplify this even further, the R9 280 to the R9 280X is like what the GTX 770 is to the 780. One is destined for very high performance 1080p/medium-low performance 1440p, the other perfect for 1440p. This is mostly because the GTX 770's memory bus sucks and can only handle 2GB of VRAM as well as it being very overpriced. So basically, you can pay $220-$240 for what the GTX 770 brings to the table. That's like being handed 4+ $20 bills, for the superior product. 3GB on 1080p is overkill, almost insane to me, but you can support multiple monitors without a hitch and you'll be securing an enjoyable experience with 1080p resolution gaming for the foreseeable future, unlike the GTX 770. All at a relatively low price.
Short reply: Compare the 770 and R9 280 more closely than you currently are. Overall performance ranking of the 280 with the closest 4 cards: R9 280X > GTX 770 > R9 280 > GTX 760 > R9 270X. The fact that the 280 is the same price/cheaper than a 760 makes it a far better option, and definitely makes it more worth buying than a GTX 770..
    Go with an R9 280.

Anandtech posted this about 2 hours ago now, just barely caught it after it was released. I've been frequently checking their site for AMD and Intel news on new processors, looks like we got a little bit of a treat.
Overall, it looks like a standard ~10% improvement but there are some surprises. In some benches, it looks like the i7-4790 can compete well with the Extreme Edition 4960X in hyperthreading. The singlethreaded performance of all the processors seems very good, as well. And the biggest surprise, to me anyway, was how well the IGPUs did in gaming. While AMD has the upper hand with HSA and dual graphics, I think Intel is on the right track with improving integrated graphics.
All in all, good read. Nothing major (to me anyway) but I figured I would share. Sadly, no K processors or overclock benchmarks just yet. We'll have to see if there's any major improvement in that department..

    Grave got a reaction from Sonefiler in R9 290 Tri-X vs PCS+
The PCS+ looks much better and from what I've heard, it's actually a really nice card (R9 290X). I don't exactly have the funds to go out and grab tons of cards to compare them personally but I will say that almost any cooler that isn't "basic" is as good as the next one. There's rarely much variation unless there's something wrong with the cooler's heatpipes or something, which doesn't affect noise levels. I've yet to see a cooler that can operate at 100% load at a significantly quieter noise level, pretty sure none exist (talking something like 28dB or lower).

Overclocking is where cards can differentiate a bit, but there's always that chance you get a shitty processor. Still, in most cases it's not noticeably different. My personal recommendation would be the PCS+ due to me being told how nice it is compared to Sapphire's R9 290X, on top of how great it looks. I think they did a great job on it.

If you want to be realistic, go with Gigabyte/EVGA always unless you want something like the Hall of Fame, Lightning, or w/e other series cards made purely for speedheads with money. That or just choose what you think looks good, they're really almost all the same.
