Silverflame got a reaction from FFLORO in Are the flannels discontinued?
Don't know if I missed an announcement on WAN show saying such or something, but the flannel shirts seem to be out of stock in every size with a "this item will not be restocked"-message. Are they permanently discontinued? Afaik they were very popular, so I was surprised that they are (seemingly) completely gone...

Silverflame got a reaction from user_50983 in Tom Scott retires from YouTube after 10 years on the dot
    Summary
Via a video uploaded on the 1st of January 2024 at 4pm UTC, precisely a decade after his first upload at 4pm UTC on the 1st of January 2014, Tom Scott has announced that he is stepping back from his YouTube channel indefinitely. This marks the end of a 10-year, one-video-per-week streak for his channel. He will still be producing his newsletter and podcast, but the main channel will no longer be updated (unless Tom sporadically decides to).

Tom Scott has made videos on various topics from Computer Science, to linguistics, to random experiments and skits, to (more recently) interesting places, feats of engineering, and projects. He has probably been one of the platform's longest and most consistent content creators, and now he's decided that a decade is enough; he kept up the channel uninterrupted for 10 years, and that's a nice point to end on.

Tom Scott is one of the OG YouTube creators. I have been following him from when the website looked very different, through university and into working, and now all good things must come to an end. I personally think it is good to see someone go "this is making me happy, but I'd also like to relax" and bow out after 10 years of improving their video and production skills, and highlighting a bunch of different, odd, fun, and interesting projects and ideas to people who might never otherwise have heard of them. Tom Scott will be missed, for sure, but better to end on a high note / slightly too soon, than burn out, crash, and/or start something bigger, which he explicitly said he doesn't want to do.

Reading through the comments, it is clear that he has had an impact on many well-known creators as well: electroboom, vlogbrothers, slo-mo guys, Gamer's Nexus, Jay Foreman, SmarterEveryDay, AbroadInJapan, Alan Walker, TEDEd, blenderguru, HowToDad, and many other well-known youtubers have left their comments saying thank you and goodbye.

Silverflame reacted to Applefreak in The end of a 30-year war - Microsoft claims to have finally solved Windows printer drivers
Problem is that this new alliance only supports new printers. I've looked all of my current ones including those in the office from 2022 and none of them show up as being supported. So whenever that garbage goes into effect, you won't get any third party drivers anymore and only a select few printers will work. Welcome back to the good old times of Macintosh OS when you had your choice of a couple of printers each generation that would be certified and supported. Another huge step back but with everyone wanting things to be more Apple, being unable to choose seems to be the future right? Odd thing is that Apple is way more compatible now than it ever was when it comes to third party drivers and peripherals.

    Summary
Elon Musk tweeted a video of a flickering 'X' and then in Twitter's voice chat Spaces, confirmed that the iconic blue bird logo would be replaced by the X.

This comes after musk acquired Twitter and renamed the company "X Corp", and is likely part of his desire to create a ubiquitous "everything app" for payments, social interactions, chats, etc. similar to China's WeeChat. The change could be enacted as early as tomorrow (Monday 24th of July), "if a good enough X logo is posted".

Another day another Musk's Twitter controversy? Apart from the part where nobody could read tweets without signing in, this will probably be the most visible change to Twitter. Some people will likely say that this, this is the final nail in the coffin and everyone will switch, but I honestly doubt it; the users have been through so much, and the mass exodus and immediate downfall never really came to be. I'd love to be wrong though (although ideally not to the benefit of Threads, but that's the most likely).

We also need to wait and see if the madlad actually does it. He's made empty promises before, and taken u-turns on big changes like the sign-in-only viewing. But maybe we'll wake up tomorrow, and there will be a barrage of confused tweets about what the new 'X' app is and why it changed.

Silverflame got a reaction from PcFan90 in I wonder how much LTT costs to run?
It's hard to search the Wan Shows, but I am sure there was one where Linus mentioned that the payroll is now into 6 (or maybe 7) figures annually. They're employing over 100 people now, and while it's unlikely that they all earn the same, at that (business-wise, relatively small) scale it'll cost you millions just to pay people.
(The only vaguely relevant reference point I have is academia, which pays nothing, and grants are usually in the millions to pay for 4-5 people for 4 years.)

In the recent fibre upgrade video, I believe they mentioned their internet is 10k-50k per month, or something like that. For a direct ISP line and corporate internet, but still...
The editing computers hopefully get turned off overnight, as do ligths and similar. But the servers running Floatplane, the forum, hosting their editing footage, etc. are all in-house afaik, and they can't be cheap to run 24/7. There are some resources about business electricity rates in British Columbia (which is where I believe LMG is located) and how to calculate your server consumption, which would let us get a rough estimate. But I'm not awake enough to do the maths right now 😅

People who are saying 'just pay for ad free' whenever things like this crop up clearly don't remember that paying for something to be ad free has historically, repeatedly, and predictably resulted in you later paying for ads. Cable TV, Satellite Radio, going to the Movies, going to Concerts, Streaming services, etc all used to be free of ads and now all have ads AND you pay to see them. In fact Cable TV's original selling point was that you paid a monthly fee in lieu of seeing ads, I dropped Cable TV because just like broadcast TV I was being fed what felt like more ads than programming and then the programming too was chock full of product placement and ads as well. It's getting to be pretty stupid, saw ads being put up on the Jumbo-Tron at a concert recently DURING the opener and between sets. We didn't pay to come see live bands featuring the new Green M&M.

Silverflame reacted to Taf the Ghost in US's FTC starts probe into OpenAI regarding data use and harm
The question has already been answered, actually. Before any of our times on this forum, "manufactured" goods were viewed as higher quality.  Because of the precision that came with machine-based consistency. But, now, what is a "high quality good", to you? While it's a combination of machine and hand-crafted, the reality is that the "value" is in the *skilled* human time put into it. Which is why Branding is so important these days. Something like an iPhone has insane R&D, Physical Production and highly skilled human investment, but it doesn't look like it. It's a commodity. It's produced at commodity scales, but knowing what to produce at that scale is the "skill" part of it.  (Higher quality products also have tighter production tolerances, which are noticeable to the end-user.)

"Creative" is easy to define. It's a product that elicits an emotion response from a human. While it means there is an "eye of the beholder" effect to it, it's not hard to define. In the case of AI generation, the creative part would be on the director of the program defining inputs that result in an output that doesn't look manufactured or fake.

    My thoughts
My initial thoughts on this were quite skeptical. The obvious downside is that it's 100% line of sight. Put your phone in your pocket and the data connection is gone. But then I looked around the pureLiFi site and did some digging. It's not meant to replace WiFi. It's more of an adjunct to WiFi. If someone like Philips could start integrating this into their smart bulbs, I can see this as completely alleviating the dead zone problem in buildings. And frankly, it's kind of cool as a concept that the light bulbs in your home could also provide high-bandwidth data.

Most of the pureLiFi site is dedicated to system integrators and OEMs, but this page has a more consumer-based vision:
