If I can't get one of the following smartphones by the end of 2019 for under 360 USD:

Looking for more choices. So far, I'm stuck between the S90 and Power 5s. The S90's modular design and features are screaming to me right now, so it's most likely going to be a top pick for me.

@James Evens Are you referring to the Ulefone Power 5S? If so, I must inform you that the camera is not really what I'm after. I could care less about dual-camera setups at this point, and am not expecting anything spectacular from it. I'm only buying the device for raw SoC specs, OS compatibility/features, and battery capacity. As such, I'm not affected by the quality of the camera. The Nexus 6P had a nice 4K camera, but I never got around to putting it to use (due to college and other obligations). So, nothing will be missed on that front. I'll most likely just get a dedicated camera if I need better quality. A phone is a communications device first and foremost, after all...

Just added a new device to the list, from this.

It's always interesting to see where forum members are willing to cheap out on their electronics.

Personally I wouldn't buy any cheaper Chinese manufacturers like Ulefone or DOOGEE. The Mi Max 3 is massive.

What's the price of the Zenfone 3 Zoom?

@dizmo I like my smartphone and all, but it's primarily meant to be a communications device. Can't really justify throwing over 500 USD at it when my workstation is:

    • more reliable
    • more useful/productive
    • considerably more powerful

Also, smartphones have become overgrown toys as of recent. Everyone's chasing muh thin bezels, thin frame, moar cameras, and less ports, while ignoring some of the very benefits of mobile devices. Ease of mobility and handling, better efficiency and battery life (due to lower-power SoC's), simple UI and ergonomics, overall durability, etc. But that was thrown out the window when bezels disappeared and buttons went out of style. Now everyone has an ugly notch, and 200 USD is considered to be budget. 100 USD used to be considered budget level back in 2014/2015. I don't cheap out because I'm a cheapo. I cheap out because modern smartphones don't deserve my monetary support, and I'll be buying used. The phone I want doesn't exist. But obviously, the one you like does exist. And I'm happy to hear that.

BTW, I've owned the DOOGEE X5 Pro and X6 Pro. They were both 100 USD a piece, and decent for the price. Dual-SIM standby, microSD card slot, removable battery, 2GB RAM, quad-core MTK - a decent mix for 100 USD. Also pretty durable for plastic construction. Never managed to damage the devices in any way (aside from scratching the backside up a bit) - without a case ?. That was after dropping those things outside on concrete a few times ?. And the X5 Max Pro has a fingerprint sensor! That one, I never got the chance to own, but I've heard that it's pretty nice for the price ?

Haha, I guess. I don't really look at it that way, as a workstation and a phone are two completely separate entities.

If you actually look at phones generation to generation, they've become significantly more efficient. Things rise in price as they gain more features, plus inflation. The prices of everything goes up over time. $100 is still budget level, but there was never a great deal available at that price point; even the G series from Motorola, often considered the budget king, was $149. Having owned cheaper phones, they just don't meet the build or quality of higher end units.

@dizmo I guess. The workstation tends to have a higher priority in my mind. Not like I'll be writing documents, doing my taxes, handling large (over 20GB) files, or working with sensitive documents on my phone. I tend to do important things on a PC. The smartphone gets used when I'm out-and-about and doing small tasks of reduced complexity (I don't even listen to music on my smartphone - iPod + iExplorer makes things easy for me). I even prefer a dedicated camera over using my phone when I have the option, since the camera will have more options and features when comparing devices of similar price-point.

I need some more 6-core and 8-core options. Especially with headphone jacks. I can care less about whether it has bezels or not - just make sure it has a decent panel. A nice camera is a plus.

ZenFone 6 and DOOGEE S90 are the final two candidates (aside from Nexus 7 2013 LTE variant)...
