Jaok reacted to Eigenvektor in is there an app that scans your computer and detects of theirs any issues with any hardware?
For RAM, you can use https://www.memtest86.com/. For SSDs you can use something like CrystalDiskInfo, but most SSD manufacturers have their own apps to read the drive's S.M.A.R.T data to see if there are issues. Don't know anything specifically for CPUs/GPUs, but you could use benchmarks/stress tests to see if your computer runs into issues under load.

    Cheers,

ive planned to start an retraining to IT-Specialist / Systems Integration in January this Year, so i took my savings and dumped them in a Threadripper Build since i want to specialize myself on VMs and Security while keeping a decent gaming Rig via PCI Passtrough. The Problems started right after assembly, the Board failed to detect 16 of the 32 GB RAM so it went back to the Online-shop for the first time

The Board arrived 4 Weeks later, with a missing Cooler Holding Nut on the upper left Corner of the CPU Socket. The Nut fell right out of the Mainboard packaging so the Board went back into RMA again, this time to Gigabyte itself.

The Board returned Weeks later without the cooler Nut ( i've put the damn Thing in an extra mini anti-esd Bag so they definitely opened it )

About that time, i had enough of the Online-Shops RMA and since my retraining was delayed due RMA to September, i've opened a Thread in a German Forum, Gigabyte had an own Section there. https://extreme.pcgameshardware.de/gigabyte-aorus/534931-gigabyte-aorus-pro-x399-mit-defekt.html perhaps someone at LMG speaks German, take a look, its quite hilarious ^^
Anyway, Gigabyte answered the Thread and the Board went to Taiwan the second or third Time and returned in mid May or so.

Now 2 Weeks ago, i decided to upgrade the System with additional 32 GB RAM and an NVMe to finish the Build after almost a Year and guess what .... the Nut fell right of the PCB again, and this Time the CPU itself might be damaged ( CPU is unconfirmed but the Board fails to detect the C Channel even on a Testbench and the Sys itself has been unstable in the last 3 Weeks )

The Online Shop told me to send in the Board to RMA a 4. Time, it will be repaired by Gigabyte ... eventually. Uhm yeah ….. what the actual f. . . ?! , did you ever had the constant worry in the back of your Head that your Cooler might fall off and ruin your Rig because of a faulty Mainboard ? ^ ^

Most Mainboards have a Power and a Reset Switch on the Board itself, check your manual you'll find it
What Board are you using ? btw

Did you try to power on the Mainboard with the Power switch on the Mainboard itself ? this would'nt be the first broken Power Switch i've heard of

I second this. I have a pair of readers/PC prescription glasses with this and like it a lot. I work 8-10 hours a day in from of dual screens, then play on the PC at home after work.

Firstly, a proper prescription is an absolute must which is sounds like you have.  Don't count on $5 readers from Walmart or something.   Then get this coating as well.

In my opinion, just visit the optometrist and ask for lenses with blue light filter especially if you need prescription glasses. That way colors will still look natural unlike this one that slaps a yellow filter to block blue light which is basically putting an iPhone’s Night Light into eyeglasses.

This is the coating of my eyeglasses and I like it a lot.

Jaok reacted to Dargonesti in Can I have multiple desktops with different files on them in WIndows 10?
One year later, I made my own research and have found nothing...

I'm thinking of tinkering for a workaround...
I would be possible to just move the "desktop" folder somewhere else in order to swap it out.

But would it be possible to detect an event of desktop swapping?

If so, then we could just listen to that event,
then move the current desktop items into, say, C://tmp/desktop[prev Desktop Number]
and finally, move a folder from C://tmp/desktop[new Desktop Number] to the real desktop location.

we'd need to set the icons display as sorted and in grid,
but that's a compromise I'd be willing to pay!

    So,
anyone has a clue on how  to do this?
Anyone interested in using a solution like that?

You can't. Location is handle by the package manager. Applications that you built from source or download in raw binary forms can be place where ever you want however.

Usually you don't want to just symbolic link. Many programs rely on files and libraries that they may not find if you move them elsewhere and symbolic link them.

If you want all the programs package manager install to a 2ndary drive, you can boot into a live USB and then mount partitions in your 2nd drive to usr/bin and usr/sbin.

Important: move everything from the bin into your partitions on your 2nd drive before mounting. Don't forget to edit the fstab file.

Programs are spread across the root partition, between man files, libraries, etc, so you can't really achieve this.  Plus if you do manage it and the second drive fails, your whole OS breaks down.

I mean, it's not the smartest move, but I don't see why not. Regardless, /home directory on another drive is a lot more common (and natively supported by the installer)

You'd want to link the folder to the location on the other drive using ln

Jaok reacted to Sauron in How do I change the location where Ubuntu installs programs.
I don't think you can symlink /usr/bin to something else. You'd need to make a dedicated partition for it but I don't think that's what OP wants. I think what they actually want is to have their home folder on the other drive.

honestly just find an older Office PC online, used (Dell Optiplex, HP Office, Lenovo ThinkCentres), and slap in a GTX 680 or something in there. Perfectly, capable to run a decent amount of games and will only cost you around $250. You can find deals out there to meet your $200 range.
