You said a reputable brand. You also said:
And you never specified that Rosewill is not one. It is a fairly well known brand, that a lot of people would have heard of.

Doesn't matter if they are in stock in the US, since OP is in Norway. And the first one especially doesn't matter if OP wants something other than a fire hazard 🙂

BillNyeThecommieSpy reacted to AndreiArgeanu in EVGA W1 500W power supply. Not as bad as people make it out to be. 1 year review
1 year ago I was making myself a cheap build and I was looking to get a power supply since the 240W included in the Optiplex I got wasn't enough. I looked and found the EVGA W1 500W, a pretty cheap power supply at the time. Asking around the forum about it, most people say it's, bad, crap and what not, and I wouldn't have got it if it weren't for a great deal I got locally. I ended up getting the PSU for 10£ brand new in box with wrapping and everything.

And I installed it in a system with a GTX 770 and i5-3570(not exactly low power component). And 1 year later I haven't encountered any issues with the power supply. It has worked perfectly since I got it, no weird noises, no blue smoke, no sparks and no instability, and it still continues to serve me well to this day.

I'm not exactly surprised to see that products aren't as bad as people make them out to be, but it really goes to show how easily people can be misled by the Tier Lists on the forum.

BillNyeThecommieSpy reacted to M3talGod2 in Project "Dalamud"
Hello everyone! This is my first actual build log, so please excuse any mistakes. I'm here to show off my new build/start a new project.
So you may be wondering "What does 'Dalamud' mean?", it is in reference to this. It's a "moon" that was in the game FFXIV. Towards the end of the 1.0 era of the game, Dalamud was crashing down onto the in- game world, but some plot stuff happened, and Bahamut, the legendary FF franchise summon, pops out of it and destroyed the world (literally, a cutscene played and the servers went down) and the game was reborn around a year later as FFXIV: A Realm Reborn.
As you will see I went with a red aesthetic (as Dalamud was red), and will eventually be adding more in the way of FFXIV themed things as I go along with this build.

So let's get into the actual build log.

    This was my previous build.
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
    CPU Cooler: Stock Cooler
    Motherboard: MSI B350 Tomahawk
Memory: 16 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX
Storage: SanDisk SSD PLUS 1 TB
Video Card: EVGA GTX 1060 SSC
    Case: Phanteks Eclipse P400
Power Supply: Thermaltake Smart BX1 650W

This is my new build (with the classic spread of components).

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Master Liquid ML240L (Arriving sometime tomorrow, got delayed unfortunately)
Motherboard: Gigabyte X570 I Mini Itx Motherboard
Memory: 16 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX
Storage: SanDisk SSD PLUS 1 TB + WD Black 500GB M.2 SSD
Video Card: Zotac RTX 2070 Super Twin Fan
    Case: NZXT H210i
Power Supply: Thermaltake Smart BX1 650W

A lot of the upgrades were more future proofing, then actually needing them. Adding more storage as games get bigger and bigger. Upgrading the gpu so I can wait another 3-4 years to upgrade to a newer one. Upgrading the motherboard so I can get a new Ryzen cpu once they come out. Upgrading/Downgrading the case, so it’s a bit more compact as my desk space becomes smaller due to online college classes.
I kept my current psu because I don't anticipate my future builds needing to go any higher than 650w, but maybe when Black Friday rolls around I'll get a new one.

Here is a pic of the "final" build.

Now onto more of the project stuff. This is mostly in the concept stage, so I'll just list out some bullet points I plan on doing in a first to last in priority order.
Tie in the red theme, i.e. red/black cables, rgb fans/strips, spray paint gpu/ssd? Either A. Get some custom stickers for the case depicting the FFXIV logo which looks like this, Bahamut, and a couple job icons or B. Spray paint them onto the case Find some more Dalamud related things to slap into/onto the case. Thanks for reading through everything (if you did)! This will be a long ongoing project that will probably stay pretty down to earth with nothing too crazy happening to it. I'll keep this updated with pretty much everything I do with it, so stay tuned!

BillNyeThecommieSpy reacted to Zando_ in [X79] CHEAP Old Xeons = pure GOLD..?
Straight up misinformation. All LGA1366 Xeons are unlocked. 16xx Xeons are usually unlocked, both on LGA2011 (16xx v2) and LGA2011-3 (Most 16xx v3s). All Xeons I've ever tried have 0 issues with normal (non-ECC) RAM. There's also one-off super rare Xeons for 2011-3, and the purpose built specifically for overclocking Xeon W-3175X on LGA3647.

What. They ship with a lower TDP than their i7 counterparts the majority of the time, and even high core count ones are easy to cool since they're low clocked. Unlocked ones will get hot when OCing, but no hotter than any similar core count i7 at the same voltages. Noise is dependent on the cooling solution, anything down to a Celeron will run noisy if you don't have appropriate cooling and just ramp the fans.

@gal-m They are right on one front, that Xeon will not outperform your current i7, since that's a 6c/12t that can clock to the moon (4.7+ is normal on Sandy Bridge chips, perfectly achievable on a lot of Ivy hexacores as well). If you can find a 1680v2 however, that'll spank your current chip in anything that scales past 6 cores. It's an 8c/16t Ivy Bridge E chip that is unlocked and overclockable.

BillNyeThecommieSpy reacted to Spotty in PSU 750W... Which of mine is "better"?
Each of the two 12V rails individually can do a maximum of 540W (45A at 12V), however the power supply can only output a maximum total of 750W.

Think of it as having a fire hydrant with two attachments for hoses. The fire hydrant can do 750 litres of water a minute. Each hose can carry a maximum of 540 litres of water a minute. If you have one hose plugged in to the fire hydrant, you can do up to 540 litres of water per minute from that hose. If you have two hoses plugged in to the fire hydrant, then combined the two hoses can only do a total of 750 litres per minute because that's the limitation of the hydrant.

🤦‍♂️ This is why manufacturers stopped making multi-rail PSUs.

BillNyeThecommieSpy reacted to Spotty in PSU 750W... Which of mine is "better"?
    540 + 130 = 670

And that's not how that works. Unless you are suggesting your Seasonic Prime Ultra Titanium 750W is really only a 600W PSU since it's rated for max 100W on 3.3V and 5V combined.

BillNyeThecommieSpy reacted to seon123 in PSU 750W... Which of mine is "better"?
That's not how it works at all. If you have no idea what you're talking about, please have the courtesy to at least not share absolute bs.

45A on each 12V rail means that you can pull up to 540W (12V * 45A) from either rail without triggering OCP. But you can also not pull more than 750W (62.5A) combined from the PSU without triggering OPP.

Also, looking at how many amps the 12V rail(s) are rated for is not how to decide if one PSU is better than another.
