@LinusTech Linus, First off, Thank you. It's the understatement of the decade but I’ve always been comforted by the fact that I could always geek out to one of your videos at any point in time for the better part of a decade. I've watched you, your team, and your family, grow and change over that time. It really feels like I’ve been a part of that family. We've loved and supported you this whole time and will continue to do so no matter where fate takes you from here on. You have sacrificed so much of your time and your life for others, especially for us, your community. I'm deeply moved by your passion and commitment to what you love, and I’m inspired by your drive to share that passion with others. You have touched the hearts of many. You have worked tirelessly over the years to create a company and a community of like-minded individuals that have been brought together and it’s hard to wrap your mind around the far-reaching effect that you have truly fostered. Your accomplishments amaze me. You have been an inspiration to me personally. Watching you for these past seven years, I have seen a lot of your characteristics in myself and I've looked to you as a role model. I've appreciated the effect you've had on me and my passions as well. You’ve touched my life without even knowing it. Indeed, you have sacrificed parts of yourself and worked arduously for so many people, but now I think it’s time you focus on your family and yourself. We love your work ethic and the parts of you that have brought us all here but, in the end, it’s not worth it if you sacrifice your soul. Take some time off, pull back your hours at work, focus on what makes you happy. Spend time with your wife and kids, and make sure to take some time for yourself as well. We congratulate you on the 10m, but it shouldn't be an obligation for you in any way. If something causes you stress, it's not worth doing, especially if it’s supposed to be a joyous occasion but ends up being harmful. My suggestion is for you to pursue what gives you joy. We will love and support you no matter what. I can’t say I won’t be sad if you choose to retire. I just hope you’ll stick around for WAN show, even if it’s just to chat. Where ever life takes you from this point on, I wish you and your family blessings and peace. Thank you.

I couldn't find the WAN show post so I'm just doing this here. I want to share my thoughts on some comments Linus made during the last WAN show and I want to know what you all think too. About Linus’ thoughts on Tesla: About being right to wait to get on the EV bandwagon: I think waiting to get an EV isn’t a problem, the technology still has a long way to before they are leaps and bounds ahead of traditional gasoline powered vehicles. But, what Linus said about a future where there will be a lot of competition and getting something, “really sweet for a lot less” isn’t going to be viable for a while longer. Though Rivian has a great prototype, they are a new company and will have the growing pains that new companies have. They will have to learn about production and work out the bugs that come along with it which will take a while. Not to mention they need to secure viable battery production before they can become competitive. This all ignores the fact that when it first launches, the R1-T and R1-S won’t be competitively priced. I would say that traditional automaker’s EV’s are even further behind Rivian because of their amount of investment into their technology. Even when there are more EV’s on the market in the future, Tesla’s cars are already close to competitive so the prices dropping even lower isn’t likely. Bottom line, the competitive EV world that Linus mentioned won’t be around for a long long time. So long in fact that waiting for it would be unbearable. Regarding the problems Linus has with the way Tesla does things: 1) Right to repair. Linus has a good point here. Tesla is not the best when it comes to “right to repair” and they’re not great when it comes to doing the repairs themselves. One major complaint I have with them is that they don't let their own authorized partner garages pre-order parts in advance to anticipate future customers’ problems. Instead, Tesla requires that the customer’s vehicle must come into the shop and inspected before a list of parts can be ordered from Tesla. This slows down the repair process and makes it a hassle to deal with. They have a long way to go in the way of convenience when it comes to repairing their own vehicles. I would also like to see them release schematics and make parts available for ordering online but they may not want to allow parts to go out for repair freely because they would rather use them to make new vehicles instead of repairing existing ones. 2) “Hardware as a service”. Linus’ comment about the most recent update being a, “paid update” is partially false. It is not a required update, it’s an optional performance upgrade. No one is being forced to pay for it, nor are they being forced to pay for security or essential updates. I don’t think anyone knows what the right solution is, but why shame them for trying? Using a slippery slope argument is a terrible argument for reasons I shouldn’t have to go into. I understand your frustration that the hardware has the ability to perform better but is locked due to software. This frustration is understandable but irrational. Making the extra performance a simple software update is advantageous in several ways: it makes the car more affordable and easier for consumers to get their hands on, production can be streamlined because they do not need to produce separate differentiated hardware, people can upgrade in the future if they want once they have the money. In the end, using software to differentiate products is beneficial to all parties involved. Your frustration is irrational. 3) Marketing. The word, “auto pilot” is just a name. Anything that someone would assume from the name and not what it does should be the blame when something bad happens, not the product. Users agree to the terms before they use Auto Pilot. Any mis-use of the product thereafter is due to the user’s misunderstanding and irresponsibility. It does not give anyone a, “false sense of security” because it never claims to be level five. Any misunderstanding is the fault of the individual, not Tesla. People or legislators who fear autonomous driving will always be a part of the equation. Even if Tesla called Auto Pilot something else, or even if they didn’t release it, people would still be against it. There is no getting around it so it isn’t a valid argument. The thing that Linus seems to not fully grasp is how much data level 5 autonomy requires. Linus said he wants, “a level 5 autonomous vehicle as soon as possible,” but his idea of hiding away the technology until its ready and flawless is completely unreasonable. It’s a paradox to get it as fast as possible and have it hidden away from the real world. Google had taken ten years to be able to drive in one part of a city. That’s far too slow. The, “long tail” requires an unthinkable amount of data and minute cases that only an implementation like Auto Pilot can collect in a reasonable amount of time. Anyone who fears all of autonomous driving because of an incident at a lower level had a fundamental misunderstanding of the technology and shouldn't be taken seriously. This technology will not be made illegal, thinking this way is letting irrational fears get the best of you.
