  1. You're a legend, thank you! I installed all of them due to multiple unknown devices, but it did the job. Now to hope this resolves the crippling "stornvme - Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort4, was issued" errors that have been tormenting me recently...
  2. As much as I love LTT server videos this one felt very aimless to me. I never knew what point it was trying to get at. I'm guessing it was probably just something quickly knocked out in the pre-LTX chaos?
  3. It's a long and not particularly structured video, but from the looks of it a 3900X will be fine on an X470 board (3950X, not so much):
  4. That was a marathon video, but amazing on so many fronts. I particularly loved the excellent use of supporting staff. I probably wasn't even a third of the way through before hitting the like button.
  5. Was it ever explained why they were able to leave such an expensive camera disassembled for all this time? Seems like a heck of a thing to buy if you don't need it.
  6. Did that last motherboard actually get its BIOS checked and updated? When I built a 9900K system on a motherboard with an older BIOS it still worked but the clockspeed was stuck much closer to 4Ghz than 5Ghz until the BIOS was updated.
  7. X99 6-core systems for the older computers, but the newer ones are 8700K/9900K, GTX1080/2070, 1.5TB of M.2 SSDs, & 64GB RAM, with dual 1440p Dell Ultrasharps. Video production can be a fun industry to do IT for. Certainly beats when my whole department at a major IT corporation had to work through a Pentium 3 1Ghz terminal server with 1GB RAM. Wasn't even that long ago...
  8. It's not without its flaws, but compared to 1.5 years ago it's practically a completely different game. I recently came back to it and have been finding it quite fun.
  9. Oh man. That Rollercoaster Tycoon notification sound effect sent me right back in time.
  10. I guess the staff decided that a week of reruns was the easiest way to get through Linus' vacation.
  11. I feel Linus' pain. Trying to work out how to set up a customised Storage Spaces array was not my idea of fun. I found the documentation for the PowerShell commands to be somewhat vague, requiring a lot of trial and error. Still, being able to set up a RAID0/JBOD hybrid that could be expanded as necessary (up to 63TB anyway) without downtime and managed within the familiarity of a Windows environment was extremely helpful during the rapid transition from a small to medium business when storage needs were growing faster than the IT budget. I just had a look at the Dell ones because our office will likely need to upgrade to a professional turn-key solution in the next year or so, and I gotta ask: is it normal for those systems to only offer up to 6TB drives? I thought physical space was typically at a premium in data centres. Even upgrading to 100TB RAID10 with our slightly outdated 12TB drives feels like a formidable number of drives. I'm guessing it has to do with proven reliability, and possibly the better rebuild times of smaller drives? Strikes me as substantially increasing the risk of drive failure though.
  12. I totally recommend IPS wherever possible. Everything looks so much nicer. I sometimes notice glow in a corner or two on my ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q when the screen is almost completely black (namely dark movies and BIOS), but that's about it. My wallpaper is currently just black and I can't really see the glow. And that's with these monitors being considered relatively bad for IPS glow (I guess mostly due to the manufacturing focus being more on the panel being able to do an impressive 165hz 1440p). The Dell Ultrasharps at work are also great.
  13. Hmm, tricky. I always find port forwarding surprisingly frustrating for something so simple. At this point I can only suggest making sure your modem's firmware is up to date. Also, maybe try some of those websites that tell you if your ports are open.
  14. Ok. And the Destination IP is set to something in the 192.168.0.XXX range like the modem?
  15. Does your modem connect to a landline-based Internet connection currently? If it's using the 3G/4G capability then port forwarding won't work since that uses an additional type of NAT which you have no control over (due to IPv4 addresses being pricey and mobile devices being many).
  16. Yeah, the project got put off a bit, but that's the device that I expect to get. Looks pretty good.
  17. Yeah, that statement doesn't even remotely relate to anything I was saying.
  18. You really don't have to like Tesla or their cars. It's not like they're having trouble selling them. Tesla is notable for one important reason: They made the electric car sexy and increasingly mainstream. Other manufacturers only now seem to finally be getting their act together in response. I'm personally not a huge fan of air and noise pollution and look forward to seeing it decline in coming decades. Of course, I'm not defending any unnecessarily risky behaviour regarding investors' money. But hopefully Musk and Tesla will be a bit more stable going forward.
  19. Yes, capped frame rates reduce video card (and usually CPU) usage, which reduces power consumption and heat production. Capping your frame rate will have no effect on preventing stutters unless you've somehow designed a case with next to no air flow and the heat builds up in your case to a point where everything thermal throttles. In other words, capping a frame rate has exactly one effect on performance: it caps your frame rate. Any drops below 30 or 60fps will be a result of the visual complexity and engine optimisation of the game you are playing relative to the performance of your system. Higher frame rates may still be beneficial on 60hz monitors that don't have freesync or gsync. They reduce the visual difference between each frame, which I find makes screen tearing less noticeable. You can try v-sync instead, but it generally introduces noticeable lag.
  20. So I'm curious: This video claims that even with a giant coil of copper tubing they couldn't transfer much heat. But then wasn't a high level of heat transfer with copper the reasoning behind why whole room water cooling didn't work? I was never quite clear on that.
  21. The i7 8700K is pretty much the best all-round CPU currently available. Considering Intel can't get 10nm off the ground, I doubt the 9th gen chips are really going to be a massive improvement unless you desperately want those extra cores to get the absolute best export times. Getting an 8700K in the office instantly made our video editing staff happy (especially our VFX guy). It's the best timeline scrubber CPU and can still export 4K video in approximately real time.
  22. Try removing one of the sticks and see if that's any different. That fixed my problem until I could afford different RAM. Also, check Task Manager and just make sure your CPU isn't doing anything else in the background. I had a computer today where the CPU was just being slammed by Avast for no reason.
  23. Yeah, an i7 8700K has literally the best single threaded performance of any CPU (especially overclocked), which is best for effectively every game ever, and a wide range of tasks in video editing. An 8-core Ryzen will win on export/render times because that's a task that can saturate plenty of cores easily, but unless you're in a business where your exports are long and time is money, the i7 8700K will almost certainly give you the most well-rounded and satisfying experience.
  24. Your argument only works if there was a CPU of similar or lower price with higher performance that they could have gone with. And there isn't. The closest Core i3 costs noticeably more and also has integrated graphics. You just can't get a CPU at that price range without one, which clearly indicates they aren't expensive components anyway. Wanting people to have the best is fine, but it's just bizarre to complain about paying for something harmless that cost next to nothing by arguing that they should have spent even more money Anywho, @Diacute, it definitely looks like some sort of CPU issue, but I'm trying to work out what your GPU usage is at from those screenshots. I can't see any values that would make sense. Can you clarify? You can easily check in Task Manager as well these days. You should probably ensure you have the latest BIOS. They've release a lot of them in the past year: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-AB350M-DS3H-rev-1x#support-dl-bios Also, it may be worth trying some different RAM if you get the opportunity. I know I had all sorts of weird issues on my Ryzen system with some Kingston HyperX RAM when I tried to use 2 sticks. While it shouldn't matter as much on a 2200G as it does a normal Ryzen chip, higher RAM speeds would certainly also be worth testing if possible.
