  1. Came across this article and thought " LTT Collab/LMG Lab launch?" (Don't let the click-bait article title dissuade you) https://www.pcgamer.com/the-large-hadron-collider-is-sucking-in-graphics-cards-at-a-rapidly-increasing-rate/ Seems like a great way to look at how the high-end GPUs get used for data-center applications, since CERN has been willing to share lots of information and tours etc. in the TechTube sphere in the past, and it would be a cool way to introduce some of the Lab staff since that level of education/expertise would likely be helpful for discussing CERN's implementation of the tech Plus, I could totally see upgrading them to the most recent data-center level Ampere tech could be it's own video series (or at the very least a discussion of what it would take to upgrade and why that isn't feasible/couldn't be done presently would make for interesting content).
  2. Good day All! I know, I know, in this market, waiting until the week before school starts to find a laptop is going to mean value is going out the window... Nevertheless, my fiance needs a laptop for nursing school, orientation starts next week and classes start the following week. My price range is ~$1,500 (factor expedited delivery in with that, where applicable) but the budget is somewhat flexible - I strongly believe in getting what you pay for, so I will pay a little more for good value. She has a gaming rig, so it will only be for school and web browsing (but she does most of that on her phone). The minimum specs they provided are pretty meh: Laptop that is less than 3 years old Microsoft Office 2016 or newer Operating System: 32-bit and 64-bit Versions of Windows 10. Alternate versions of Windows 10, such as Windows RT and Windows 10 S, are NOT supported at this time. Only genuine, U.S.-English versions of Windows Operating Systems are supported. ExamSoft does not support Tablet devices other than Surface Pro as detailed below CPU Processor: 2.0 ghz Intel i3 processor or equivalent RAM: 4GB or higher Hard Drive: highest recommended for the operating system or 1GB of available space. For onsite support, and in order to backup the answer files to USB, a working USB port is required (Newer devices may require an adaptor) For technical troubleshooting, account passwords, including BitLocker keys, may be required. Internet connection for Download, Registration, Exam Download and Upload. Examplify cannot be run within virtualized environments or environments that require persistent network (local or otherwise) connections during secure exams. This includes, but is not limited to, VMWare, Parallels, Citrix workspace, Virtual Disks, Streamed images, etc. Screen Resolution should be at least 1024x768 or higher. No Chromebook No Netbook or Tablet No i-Pad That being said, with my experience, I find i3s to be pokey at the best of times, especially QOL with daily driver tasks So, in addition to the minimum specs above, I'm looking for recommendations (or links to reviews etc.) that have: Core i5 or better 8G RAM (I figure that is the bare minimum these days, 4G is asking for trouble, anything above 16G would be overkill) A 1080 display or better ~7 hours battery life would be ideal, her school day will be in that range (8:00 - 3:00) The only request she had was a 10-key number pad (hence why I ended up here, most retailers and other search methods don't offer that as a filter) At least 1 type-A port, while not a requirement (I have adapters) would be good to have A backlit keyboard is preferable Other than that, it doesn't need to have bleeding edge performance, but something decent and portable - and ideally not too "gamer-y" I am aware this is sorta a "plz bro" post, but I'm trying to explore all my options here, I have also been scouring vendor sites, floatplane reviews, etc. She's going to take a look at what I've found when she gets home from work today, here are the current contenders (in no particular order): https://www.newegg.com/lenovo-thinkbook-15-g2-itl-20ve006uus/p/1B4-001H-02H01?Item=1B4-001H-02H01 https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/inspiron-15-2-in-1-laptop/spd/inspiron-15-7506-2-in-1-laptop/n27506ejtth?view=configurations https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/laptops/15-5520/spd/latitude-15-5520-laptop/s001l552015us https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/compare?ocs=smv155w11p1c7500c,s014l352015us,s027l352015us,s001l552015us I figured LTT peeps would be the best to run it by, we're a special breed! (of helpful and knowledgeable that is) Cheers! (and my sincerest appreciation for any input!)
  3. Summary NVIDIA put out an Easter Egg hunt for their GTC 2021 presentation in April, no one seems to have picked up on the biggest one: the entire presentation was a simulation in the NVIDIA Omniverse! Quotes My thoughts Holy Crap! Matrix anyone? Sources Techspot Article NVIDIA blog and Documentary
  4. https://www.seeedstudio.com/DeskPi-Pro-Set-top-Box-For-Raspberry-Pi-4-p-4704.html This has to be the coolest piece of kit for Raspberry Pi I have ever seen, it covers so many wishlist items (tower cooler, separate power for external storage, all-in-one enclosure, power button, port rearrangement etc.) and I can't wait to get one - it has finally pushed me over the edge to upgrade from my Pi3/WD Pidrive 1Tb Plex server setup to Pi4 (8G of course!) and a nice big 2.5" SSD (with berryboot assuming the USB 3 to SATA supports UASP) though I do wish I knew more about getting Pi 4 to actually use H.265 instead of only H.264... I know LTT doesn't do a ton with Raspberry Pi, but IMHO this is a big enough development for at least an SC if not an LTT video
  5. Summary Japanese company Donut has developed a smart facemask to combat diifculties with being understood while wearing a mask Quotes My thoughts The c-mask is a new accessory from tech statup Donut Robotics in Japan, which can be used while wearing a face mask acts as a Bluetooth microphone to provide better quality audio to your smartphone, allowing you to use voice commands on your device more easily while maintaining proper health and safety standards related to the pamdemic. Additionally, features such as being able to link it to a Bluetooth speaker could have broader applications in situations like teaching or office meetings, where masks might interfere with being properly understood while addressing a group of people. Futhermore, there seems to be indication that the device will allow users to take advantage of the language translation features originally developed for their Cinnamon robot, though it appears this service will require a paid subscription. Donut expects to start taking pre-orders soon, with the accessory expected to retail for USD$40. Don't he too excited yet though, the device is only expected to be available in Japan when it launches later this year, but the a representative for the company says they want to make the c-mask available in other countries worldwide in the future. 6. As a final follow-up, turns out a little percussive maintenance was needed on the H115i pump housing. Was doing a little research on the issue as it was happening when not folding after a complete clean install of Win 10 "Couldn't possibly be, right!?" Turns out it worked, liquid temps immediately dropped into the 40's (C) and 6850k is holding around 60C under load now... much better

  8. I seem to have found at least part of the solution. After checking everything (fans, pump, TIM etc) I was still having issues when the computer was idle overnight and I came back to 50+ degrees in the liquid. I went to make sure I didn't have any overclock applied or anything, discovered my power settings were set to high performance, specifically cpu min and max states were set to 100% Changed to balanced (cpu min 5%, max 100%) and things have been pretty smooth ever since, currently have liquid temp of 48 while folding, cpu cores are in 68-80C range.

  10. Thanks! Great info, I've taken your advice and x-posted to H2O forums.
  11. I have the H115i set up in pull as an intake at the top of my case (I know most prefer exhaust there, but it's a filtered location on the case so I prefer to take advantage of that to keep the rad cleaner), and the AIO for the 1080ti is set up in pull as rear exhaust right next to it, I also have another intake (120mm) at the bottom of the case for fresh air into the blower element of the GPU cooler. It's a very open case (CoolerMaster Storm Trooper circa 2016, Acrylic window over MB but front end is all mesh, running a slightly positive pressure to keep that mesh cleaner) AFAIK the pump is working, iCue reports RPM for it and they do fluctuate when I switch the profile, tho I have been leaving it at extreme lately. All fans are spinning, H115i has the stock Corsair fans, 1080ti has stock EVGA fan, bottom intake is some CM or other from a while back and all seem to be moving air pretty well.
  12. I originally posted this in the Folding section, and it was suggested I might get answers here: I have a 6850k cooled by an H115i, liquid temps are sitting in the 55ish range very consistently. [CPU is running 1 "thread" maxed out at 100% utilization (and another around 30%) all the time even though I have F@H set to only 1 slot for GPU (EVGA 1080ti Hybrid) and no CPU slot. I do have F@H slider set to "full"] - apparently F@H uses that 1 thread per GPU to facilitate and this is normal, it hasn't caused any instability or anything HOWEVER: Problem is my CPU package temp is hanging out around 85-100 with nothing else really going on ("normal" BG processes like Steam, RTX voice, etc.) It seems the stable temps in liquid for my AIO mean it is dissipating heat decently, however, even after reapplying thermal paste (Kryonaut) I'm still seeing a lot of heat in the CPU Is this normal? 14. I am also a fan of having an IPS panel, and I know that high refresh == $$$ for IPS, but I'm ok with that.
  15. I am looking for a screen that supports split screen from multiple inputs. I really like the way the 43UD79-B that Linus reviewed handles this, but I'm not sure I want to game in 4k, so I was wondering if there are high refresh rate monitors that have similar features out there, maybe something in 1440? I do have a EVGA 1080ti FTW3 hybrid and i7 6850k, so technically i can push (most of) the frames for 4k, but with the recent vid on gaming higher refresh over 4k, especially given the pixel density at desk distance with the 43" monitor, I'm not thinking the 43UD79-B will make for a great 4k gaming experience. The reason I like the screen split is because I tinker with raspberry pi and have a work laptop i'd like to be able to use in conjunction with Synergy.
  16. Dang, came here to post that, just saw it myself
  17. Mine just arrived and I'm loving them so far, I'm curious what others think. Also, I'd love to see @LinusTech's opinion, he's done some pretty serious HQ audio reviews in the past.
