  1. I currently stream everything from the server (which currently is just a laptop with External HardDrives attached). That is currently set up at a friends house who has better internet speeds than I do. He uses it locally, but I have to stream to my house. I guess in my budget to build a proper system to stream my content I should also include a budget for a second back up of everything. Thanks for everyone's advice.
  2. Hello, Last year I started planning on creating a new Plex Server for my digital media. Right now I'm lost on what solution I should use for backing up and protecting my media. My plan was to originally set everything up with Raid5 (Someone also mentioned to me RaidZ2, not sure what that is). But it was also pointed out to me that Raid is NOT a backup and that it only protects data from a hardware(HDD) failure and not against accidental deletion, corrupted files, or viruses/malware. I'm not worried about accidental deletion, my main concern was if my HDD failed or files became corrupted. Is Raid 5 still the option I should go? Or is there a different route I should be looking at? Should I be looking at a way to back up the hard-drives on top of a Raid configuration? I've just spent a lot of time digitizing my media, and do not want to loss it and have to start from scratch. Thanks in advance for any advice that may help
  3. An FX8320 seems to be in the ball park of what I was thinking. My current thought was a AMD RYZEN 5 1400 CPU, GIGABYTE AB350M MOBO, 3 5TB Seagate HDD, and 16GB DDR4 OR, would i be better off using my Gaming set up for my server and rebuilding my gaming rig? I've currently got a Core i5-4690K with 16GB DDR3 And does anyone have a suggestion for a Raid 5 controller?
  4. Hello Techtips community, I Would like to improve on my Plex Media Server due to the fact that a) none of my files are backed up, and b) I can really only manage to transcode 1 file at a time. In a past Topic I asked suggestions on HDD for my server and I was recommended to set up a Raid 5 Array with 3 HDD. So I am now looking into how to go about building a server that will allow me to transcode 3-6 files at 1080 at once, support up to 6(?) HDD (for future growth of media library) Is anyone able to guide me to a Guide or Form that would be able to help me build my server? Or, does anyone here have any recommendations on a build I could build (or pre built system that wouldn't break the bank)? My experience is no experience with Raid 5 Array, but have some experience with building PC's. Thank you in advance for your help.
  5. Hello all, I currently have a Plex server running off of an old laptop with a Seagate 5TB Desktop drive and a 1TB WD pocket Drive. I plan to overhaul my setup due to the fact that the CPU runs at 90-100% when transcoding a single file. The question I have is in regards to the Storage. I would like to have my files all backed up so that I do not need to go through the hassle of re ripping all of my blu-rays in the case of my Seagate failing. My question is, should I spend the extra hundreds of Dollars to get 6TB WD RED NAS Hard drives to store my files on and back up on (I would need at least two which costs $580 CND on Sale), or is that unnecessary and should I just get some more Seagate 5TB HD's and back up my current HD and just replace them when they eventually fail ($320 CND for two more Seagate 5TB). Plex Server, NAS HD vs Desktop HD Thoughts?
