You may want to know that the difference between Computer Science and Computer Engineering is a few courses...  it might be worthwhile to pursue the Engineering as it goes a little further but does offer better pay in a similar field.

Just use a DVI, if you don't want to go out and buy a cable because it can do 144hz 1080p.

What about the iGPU?  Skylake is also based on 14nm vs 22 of Haswell. 
There are two things that say against it. 
(Now, the CPU part could be very similar since it is shrunk allowing for more IGPU so...)

Yeah, I'd suggest bios flashing since you are using a Haswell Refresh chip on a older Haswell board.  It might help.

My personal choice would be the ASUS because it is a triple fan card that overclocks well, and looks good too.

That is a picture in my PC, as you can see it only really matters for it to be black as case fans and LEDs can illuminate everything else, that stairstep effect by the ASUS Z97 PRO GAMER is pretty cool though....

Yeah, I'd suggest bios flashing since you are using a Haswell Refresh chip on a older Haswell board.  It might help.

If AMD could manage to make Crossfire not reliant on any game and truly achieve a "Single GPU" (but actually be multiple ones) It might be possible for them to make Crossfire Godly powerful...  This sounds almost too hopeful to be true though... 
Maybe when I become a Computer Engineer I will make Crossfire Work this way.
With Vulkan, hopefully a weaker CPU could handle this without that overhead.

I think that the i7 3770K is fast enough for your 980 Ti.  Do yourself a favor and save that money needed to upgrade.
