I have a dell r510 that I'm using as a NAS. I filled it with drives over time and needed to expand out. I got a disk shelf that I am moving the drives into, and with that I changed out the HBA to one with external ports.
Since I am using the disk shelf there's no need to keep the backplane in the r510 connected, however this caused a problem as I now don't have a way to connect my boot drive which was an SSD sitting in the 2.5" tray / bays connected to the backplane with a sata power+data combo cable. Since the backplane is not connected to an HBA the SSD obviously now has no data connecting it to the rest of the server.
Is there a way to connect the SSD simply? I noticed there were SATA ports on the motherboard but when reading around I saw some people were guessing these may be disabled and I'm not sure where to verify either way.
For power, I wasn't sure where else to get it from other than the backplane, which is fine as it is still powered. The backplane's connector is female SATA data+power.
Potential solutions for the power I have come up with are:
Find a SATA female-female power only cable (I have looked around but have not found any, only splitters which I don't know would work)
Buy another of the combo adapters that came with the server and cut the cable and shave the connector to size (This seems very jank)
Find another source for power (not sure where, I don't understand a lot of what's going on with the power distribution board or if there is a connector there that could be used)
The problem with that is the adapter cable is female to female and I guess means I would need to find a SATA female-female data only cable or (not my preferred) by another of the same adapter off ebay and cut the cable and connectors to fit which seems very jank.
Any suggestions / advice?
Cheers
