Rezalis got a reaction from Sabir in Any estimates on GTX 20 series release date?
What are the estimates for when GTX 20 series will be released? Based on Nvidia release history can anyone make an educated estimate for when it will be released? I'm considering waiting for GTX 2080 instead of 1080 ti if it is released early enough but if not, I'll just hop on the 1080 ti boat.

RAID 5 requires three or more drives and is slower than RAID 1 (and obviously RAID 0) due to parity overhead.

@Rezalis If you want to put two drives into RAID, then you have two options, RAID 0 and RAID 1. RAID 0 will theoretically double the speed (but also double the risk of all data being lost) and give you the space of both drives in usable space. RAID 1, which will give you redundancy but will give you a total capacity of only one of the drives. Both require the drives to be formatted, so you would have to completely erase both drives and then reinstall the OS.

I agree with @Rezalis and monitor your temps while playing. He makes a really good point.

At least with the fresh install, you are in a better spot than you were.

Leveraging something like HW Monitor to monitor temps during a gaming session will help identify that aspect for you.

What temps is your CPU at? There could be throttling. I experienced flicker when my laptop CPU heatsink became mis -seated and the CPU clock would not go over 1.5Ghz while plugged in and on high-performance mode. The CPU was at 99C constantly under the IHS. The computer would feel cool so I couldn't really pinpoint the problem until I downloaded Throttlestop and monitored CPU temps. I re-seated the CPU heat pipes and flicker was gone. Also before I fixed my CPU, the CPU usage would never go above 30 percent.

Yes the 2080ti or whatever will come out a long time after the 2080. I think I'm going to wait for the 2080 and see how much faster it is than the 1080ti. Till then ill just leave my build incomplete with this old gt 630 I have lying around. Actually integrated graphics might be better at that point.

Yes, it is very possible. You should have no issue with that.

Yes, you can use different resolution monitors with ease. In the control panel, the 4k display will look 4 times as large as the 1080p one because it was 4 times as many pixels. But both will connect and be useable just fine.

Rezalis reacted to NZLaurence in Combining Bands into One SSID?
The other thing to look at is you cannot mix standards on the same device connection. For that unit it has 2x 5GHz [11an+ac] and 1x 2.4GHz [11bgn] however if your device is connecting on 802.11ac then you cannot have that same device connected at 802.11an at the same time.

Where a tri radio device is good is when you have some older devices that might only be 802.11n spec as well as some newer 802.11ac devices. On a single 5GHz radio device that would mean your entire network would fall back to 802.11n to allow for the older device. On a dual 5GHz radio device this means only one radio needs to be on 802.11n the other one can be on 802.11ac.

On most consumer devices you need to manually deal with the connections using different SSID's. If you set them all to the same SSID then its random which it will connect to.

If you have a better device (think enterprise) then they will use something called band steering. This is where the router will control which device its connected to based on which will give the best over all stability and speed. You set one SSID and the router deals with it all. For example, Aerohive Wireless or Ruckus Wireless.

I was too lazy to post this, and there is less here than what I wrote in another thread

7700k boost of 4.5, add 11% = 5 GHz. Could Intel be angling trying to sell the first 5 GHz consumer CPU? OR any CPU for that matter... this assumes no IPC change and performance is due only to clock. 51% more multithread could simply be from same clocks but more cores.

Similar exercise could be performed for lower models in time.

Intel is claiming their upcoming 8700k will be 11% faster compare to 7700k in single threaded operations, as they held a training event for retailers in China. The slide also shows that, it will be the very first time, where their i3, i5, and i7 will have a cpu core bump. Where i3 are quad cores and both i5 and i7 are hexa cores with i7 having hyper thread, total to 12 threads.

A sound card is not necessary to get great audio. I have a BOSE 5.1 surround system in my basement and I get superb audio running my old laptop with HDMI. The latest Windows 10 update supports up to 7.1 surround. I would suggest running HDMI from the pc into your receiver instead of running the audio from a sound card. However if you still want a sound card, I suggest any card from Creative that fits your budget.

Rezalis reacted to Sauron in is it stupid to buy a gtx 1080ti?
That's impossible to know for sure, but they'll be top of the line only until nvidia's next product line comes out at the latest. I personally don't think a 1080ti is worth the price, however it is undeniably the fastest single gpu card on the market, so if you really need the extra performance you don't have much of a choice.
The 700 series has actually aged very poorly, they used to trade blows with the r9 200 line but with newer titles they get destroyed by them. Some say nvidia intentionally gimped the drivers to boost 900 and 1000 series sales, in which case who's to say the newer cards won't suffer the same fate? Even if you give them the benfit of the doubt, some architectural decisions (such as going for gddr over hbm and the generally underwhelming bus speeds) don't bode well for future performance.

if they have the same scalability as the 980Ti had on the 10xx series then they should last you a long time. but i don;t think any card will remain to be a beast for 4 to 5 years. maybe 3, but even then games will have progressed so far that 'older' hardware just can't keep up.
