  1. Interesting. I'll look into this. It's possible PiHole will work on certain smart tvs, too.
  2. Looking at a detailed review of the LG OLED55BXPUA, they mention that the home screen displays ads and that there "is no way around this". Do you know if having no internet connectivity to the device would prevent this?
  3. I've heard that some smart TVs lose basic functionality when not connected to an internet connection, or have issues when doing so. I will look into the LG BX series. I am a fan of LG displays in general. Thanks for the tip!
  4. Well I'm finally in the process of moving to my dream town- West End Vancouver BC. I'm a Canadian returning home from the US where I currently live in a shoe box with my wonderful wife. We are very excited for our new place because it will be comparatively MUCH larger than where we live. We are dually excited to purchase our first TV together! I'm thinking 4k OLED. The Lord of the Rings 4k is what comes to mind as the first thing I want to watch on my new TV. I absolutely do NOT, however, want to deal with a "smart" TV, for reasons I won't go into now. Are there any good non-smart 4k OLED TVs out there? I really don't have a size or price in mind at this point, so pretty much any recommendation would be very helpful right now! I'm just in the research phase at this point and have plenty of time to settle on a specific model. Things that come to mind which I will potentially connect to the TV are: -Definitely a Nintendo Switch -Definitely a laptop -Possibly a Raspberry Pi -Possibly a Chrome Cast device -Possibly a PS5 Thanks in advance for any responses!
  5. I'm just a man, young by most standards. I'm certainly not a child anymore, though the line of work I find myself in I'm certainly treated like one on occasion. No, I'm in my late 20's and am about as average as can be. Like all of us, I find myself in a fast paced world, fumbling about to keep up. COVID has turned my life around, like many others. It's just another obstacle I must overcome. Mental strength is key during these times, especially when you have a wife to support, as she does you. There is strength in relationships like that, enough to keep going with confidence. Unemployment has been a disaster, but this too has not broken me. I've saved well, and was ready as one can possibly be for a scenario like this. Alas, this situation is dire, but will not break me. I'm strong of will and mind yet. In fact this once in a lifetime situation is something I can bear. I understand it, mostly, in it's dire and ever-present reality. Instead I write this having been broken by something I cannot wrap the remaining fragments of my mind around- the horrible state of Microsoft's proprietary charging. Me, at my average apartment, on my average computer, searched for days to understand why a device costing me a thousand US dollars, being about half a year old, would stop charging no matter the things I try. Why was it that I found myself, in the darkest days of a pandemic, balancing my Surface Laptop at just the right angle so that it might charge for a portion of its capacity? Why is it that after days of this, it blinks at me no longer? That white indicator light that I crave to see glowing softly a solid white, it remains blackened. I looked to a God that I never believed in. Maybe he would understand? "God," I said as I stared out my window at the many people shopping without masks, "why does my new device, at this day and age, not charge any longer? Was it because of my sins?" I continue to stare out the window, receiving no answer. God, like the google searches I turned to, had no answers. If he did answer, just like Google, he would probably forward me to Amazon where I can buy a new charger for thirty five US dollars. You're right I'd think to myself. God would be that wise. The answer is that simple. Just buy a new charger. And while that is what I did, just moments before writing this...whatever this is, I still can't understand how I've gotten to this point. USB C. I always have this thought whispering maddeningly in the back of my head. USB C wouldn't fail you. USB C wouldn't hurt you like Microsoft's proprietary magnetic charger. "Perhaps," I usually reply back as my wife looks horrified at me from the kitchen, "but magnets are futuristic, and Microsoft told me it would work". But it didn't work, not for long at least. It didn't last. Nothing lasts. Someday, my wife will die. Someday I will die. Microsoft promised me a unique fast way to charge my device, but instead sold me existential dread. I weep openly over my deceased charger, hoping that my sorrow is not misdirected. My thoughts now turn to the charging port itself. What if THAT is to blame, I think between sobs. But I cannot think of such horrible things. Amazon may yet deliver me from my sins, just as they deliver my packages in reasonable, though unethical, times. My new charger will come, and though it may remind me of the losses I've suffered and the losses yet to come, I shall use it. Past that, I cannot say. The world is too uncertain to think ahead past Monday's expected delivery date. And Microsoft: as my anger turns to sorrow, I hope I can find it in my heart to forgive you. After all, it may be partially my fault. Finally I leave you with a quote- a poem by JRR Tolkein... All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.
  6. Hello, I'm doing a bit of work on an SFTP server as my way of noodling around with Linux for the first time! I'm having fun with it so far, but I ran into a bit of trouble. I have a handful of users and groups, and I'm trying to get them exclusive permissions to their namesake directories on a USB hard drive. Directories are all set on the hard drive, groups are arranged how I want them. I'm just wondering how I address specific groups when I give them permissions for directories. So far I found: sudo chmod g+rwx /media/pi/PiCloud/guest I understand that this gives the group read, write, and execute permissions to that directory, which is what I want, but how do I specify which group I'm granting that to? I want to give group "guest" the above permissions. In case it's important, I'll list all users and groups bellow: User: pi --belongs to groups: pi, morgan, jordan, ryan, administration, eryn, guest User: jordan --belongs to groups: administration, guest, jordan User: eryn --belongs to groups: eryn, guest User: morgan --belongs to groups: morgan, guest User: ryan --belongs to groups: ryan, guest User: guest --belongs to group: guest I have folders in my hard drive called: Administration Eryn Guest Jordan Morgan Ryan So I'm trying to get each user/group permission to rwx their name-sake directories, but I as pi need to be able to have access too. Is it possible to do this with the above example, or am I way off base? If I haven't triggered you too hard with my sheer ignorance, I'd really appreciate some pointers! Thanks, and let me know if you need more clarification.
  7. Well dang that's some juicy info! Thank you, I'll be looking into these options this week.
  8. Greetings! Lately I've been receiving a lot of phone calls from coworkers who typically close the building at night, and it's always around the time that me and my brother are elbow deep in ranked Rocket League 2v2's. I'm sitting here with a sweet mic and headphone set-up wondering why the heck I couldn't just hit a hotkey and accept an incoming call. So, I decide to look that stuff up. Lots of programs and apps link your phone and pc to send and receive sms, and some even say they can send phone calls, but NOTHING allows you to take incoming calls. I found an old post from 2016 on this forum asking why they couldn't connect their phone to their pc via Bluetooth to do this, and there was not conclusion to that discussion. I'm at a loss here. I'd REALLY like to be able to do this, but can't find anything that will let me link my phone and number to my pc and take calls without using Skype. Call center programs seem like they're specifically designed for professional use, so does anyone know anything about those? I'm really curious to see if any of you know anything about this. I'm extra dumb this week, so let me know if I left out some important info, and I'll try to get back to you asap. Thanks!
  9. Hey guys, After the birth of my first PC (R7 1700/GTX1080 etc) I've been enjoying the life of a high frame, high graphic snob. However, if I'm to record my intensely high FPS and graphics gameplay at 1440p with no loss in performance, I'm going to need a second pc to be able to GPU encode all that tasty data. I've already looked into the differences between CPU and GPU encoding for streaming and recording, but now I'm stuck on which graphics card to get for this second system. It's hard for me to think about how much gpu usage recording takes vs gameplay. Using Rocket League as an example- at 165fps, I can play at maximum graphics and AA, and be at or around 95% gpu usage, but to RECORD that same set of options, what kind of gpu bandwidth should I be looking at? Do I need the same, a gtx1080, in order to record what I play? Or does it take a lot less power to record vs generate, so all I need is maybe a 1660ti? Basically, what gpu would I need in a second pc in order to capture my primary pc's 1440p gameplay with no issues. I have an Elgato 4kPro already. So that's something. As a side note, since I don't record all that much, this will be my girlfriend's first custom PC during the other 95% of the time I'm not recording anything. This helps me justify the cost. Is this love? Or greed...
  10. Official site. It's no big deal, but I'd of thought someone from the company would have proofed it.
  11. Am I missing something, like a secondary peel or something? The LTT Sticker has extremely faint gray lettering on a white background, making it impossible to see. Pretty disappointing. I put it on my UPS instead of in my car like I planned because it's so hard to see. This is like the least important post I've ever done here--I'm used to hardware inquiries and emergency posts lol but I'm just a little surprised that they sell this even though it's almost useless for its purpose. I'm not hating or anything, just want to see if I'm being stupid or if others had the same issue.
  12. I did 50k, framed. Did 75k, framed, same all the way up to 200k. Everything had dropped frames except mostly for the 125k area.
  13. This seems to be the best I can get with slight framing It's almost likely that it'll be fine on most other games. Forza is extremely demanding, which is why I'm using it to bench.
  14. So it's impossible to record as I'd like with OBS..? Seems pretty terrible. I'd REALLY rather use the same program I have all of my scenes set up on and all that.
