The Right Honourable Jimmy's Achievements

  1. So I've owned a 13" Macbook Pro 2017 (touchbar) which I've used for Premiere and Lightroom for about a year and half. About two weeks ago it died. Motherboard issue. I conducted some research and fixing it would have cost me around £800 with Apple. I made a bold decision. I decided to build my first ever pc. I had a spare Radeon RX 580 8GB lying around which I used to use as a eGPU, so I decided it can't be that expensive. 1st attempt - Being Stupid These were the initial parts I ordered. 7th Gen Core i5 7400 3.0GHz Gigabyte H310M S2H MOBO After I ordered those two I realised I did a silly thing. I thought if they share a plug, they're compatible. That's what I get for not doing extensive research. ... Thermaltake TR2-Series 600W 80 Plus Non-Modular Power Supply BitFenix Nova Mid Tower case, Black Corsair Vengeance LPX RAM Module - 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) - DDR4 SDRAM - 2400 MHz Windows 10 DVD WD Green 240GB 2.5" 7mm Solid State Drive 2x be quiet! BL046 Pure Wings 2 Case Fan 120mm ......... When the parts arrived, all i could do is stare at them till payday. Computerless and sad. 2nd Attempt - Frying Pan I ended up ordering a B Something 200 Series motherboard. I followed all the pc build instructions. The only thing I didn't do is place my GPU on the mobo, thought I'd do it later, after I set up windows. I owned an old external dvd drive which I thought I'd be alright to install windows from. I did not have a usb stick or a computer to download it. The external DVD player required external power......I plugged the wrong cable. The system shut down and a terrible smell was in the air. I was shocked. The motherboard was on a booting loop. I spend hours trying to make it work. Took it out the case, tried to manually boot it. Nothing. The cpu light was on, so I thought I fried my CPU. 3rd Attempt - Bad RAM Considering I had an 8th gen mobo, I said to myself sod it, I'll get an i5 8400. I replaced the case, the psu and the cpu and this time I got an internal dvd drive. The computer wasn't posting. I removed one of the ram sticks and then it did manage to post. After further inspection, it seemed that the ram stick I took out was fried from the previous attempt. I managed to however boot from windows but it was playing up. Kept getting corruption messages and BSODs. Finally I managed to install windows. Then I kept getting more BSODs and the system wouldn't let me download any drivers, I was getting corruption messages. I tried to do a clean reinstall and then windows just wouldn't install. So I did some deductions and research and I decided to replace all the ram, I bought a used 8GB DDR4 3000MHz ram stick and with relief, I can say it managed to make everything work perfectly. In a few weeks I'll probably buy another 8GB stick and run it on 16GB dual mode. SUCCESS After all those incidents I managed to build my first PC. And it still worked out cheaper than repairing my mac. CONCLUSION - Do Research, look at voltages and watts of cables before plugging them to things and DON'T BUY APPLE. FINAL SPECS - Intel i5 8400 6 Cores 2.8 GHz / Radeon RX 580 8GB / H310M S2H Mobo / 600 watts non-modular supply / 1x 8GB DDR4 3000Mhz (mobo not as fast) / Bootable 240GB SATA SSD / 1TB SATA HDD / 2x Nova Tech Fans 120mm & 1x 120mm Be Quiet Fan ...................all plugged in on my 4K monitor, woop, woop.
  2. I have an Xbox One X and I'll be honest, it's a beast. I have it plugged in on my 4K monitor and I love it. Not that fussed that I don't get those 120 fps's, to be fair my monitor is only 60hz. I must admit however Rise of The Tomb Raider looks amazing, so does AC Origins and so does Hitman. I am planning to build a PC one day because it is far better for gaming but it will be a workstation for content creation. I want to splash thousands on it so I can edit videos for clients with better precision and faster rendering and preview times.
  3. Setup Macbook Pro 2016 w/ Touchbar 3.1GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 8GB RAM and Radeon 580 8GB eGPU with AKiTiO Node over Thunderport 3 (40 Gb/s) Currently waiting for the akitio Node to arrive. I was just wondering would this setup be okay for some light 4k editing work and mild after effects in 4K? I am aware that the egpu enclosure means around 10% loss of the GPU power but wondering if the GPU which I have is beefy enough? Side note, does Mac support AMD freesync or do I have to do it through bootcamp?
  4. If they keep their promise and not have only Xbox one X exclusive games then it's not worth it. I'm probably going to buy an E-GPU for my laptop and use thunder port 3 (only lose 10% of the power) and turn my laptop into a mid settings average fps 4K rig. It's either that or spend £400 more for a gaming PC. I already have an Xbox One so for me it's not worth it till they come out with the xbox 2 or whatever it will be called. If you can afford both consoles then you might as well buy a PC but if you only care about sofa gaming, playing Fifa and cracking a cold one with the boys face to face 'IN 4K' then go with the console.
  5. Again, it depends. What do you need it for? I'm a low budget film-maker so I use mid-priced DSLRs. I love my Canon 80D but my kit lens is crap. I use a website where I rent lenses. I always love using telephoto lenses which makes the camera ten times better. Lenses is what makes the cameras awesome or horrible. At university sometimes I use a broadcasting camcorder. If there's loads of movement or I'm making a investigative documentary for example I want the best auto focus hence I use the big camcorders at uni. If I'm not using tracks or anything like that and I know what I'm filming, DSLR hands down. I usually prefer to shoot at 50 fps (I live in the UK so 60fps is a no no) because it gives me more power when I edit. So again what do you need it for? Here's what I'll go with Family, cat videos etc - your phone camera Starter film-making/youtube - cheap camcorder or a Canon 750D Budget Enthusiast- Canon 80D or 70D / Sony A68 Semi-Pro - Canon 5D Professional - Canon 1D/ Most Camcoders over £1,500 / Canon C100/ Super 16 cameras Now if you hit the jackpot and want to produce a cinematic masterpiece or want to make tech videos like Linus The RED hands down or if you're a hipster like me and think anamorphic is better...then this 65mm panavision baby...
  6. Not according to most websites I've visited. They don't support any for the MacBook Pro 2016, I could disable the system integrity protection and mess with some coding and do it that way but I'd rather not do that. On most websites it says RX 580 only. Now on bootcamp I can even use a 1080 if I want
  7. I love and hate Apple hence they are my favourite and least favourite. It's weird I love OS X and their Mac line up. I hate their mobile market though, everything about their 'innovation' bull. But when it comes to true innovation, google hands down.
  8. If I'm going to go down the E-GPU route, I'm going to buy the GPU before high Sierra because when High Sierra hits, IT WILL BE EXPENSIVE like hell I bet. Supply and demand, that economy A level helps with stuff like that. Apparently I'll be able to use it on bootcamp before high Sierra apparently, I think.
  9. Hello, I'm new here, been a fan of Linus for a while. I currently own a 2016 13" MacBook Pro with a touchbar. I use that mostly for video editing and browsing. I've been looking for something to game on at 4K in September, I'm not really fussed about having all the settings at Max. I currently have an Xbox One and I was planning on buying the upcoming Xbox One X but most of my friends were telling me that would have been a stupid idea and I should build a PC instead because upgradability and customisability. I crunched up the numbers and this was what I was comfortable with to start with A GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 - £250 AM4 Micro ATX - £80 8GB DDR4 RAM - £70 1TB HDD 6Gb/s - £40 Midtower - £32 Cheap Heatsink - £20 Power supply (don't know what wattage yet)- £45 + other costs £750 (967$) all of that not including a monitor. (I have a 4K 50 inch TV though) When those numbers came up I was sort of annoyed because everyone says that consoles are horrible but at the end of the day they are cheaper. I could spend £450 on an Xbox One X or get the equivalent of that or better as I indicated above (other than the ram) in a much higher price. That was till I realised I have 4x thunder port 3 ports on my MAC. The upcoming high Sierra update will support an RX 580 E-GPU and before people shout you can't game on a Mac, well there's bootcamp which I use occasionally. The reason why I bought a Mac is because the equipment I use at university are running OS X and because I video edit I didn't want to format my external storage into exFAT, my teacher specifically said it's a no no. Hence I didn't spend my hard cash on a killer PC. So why not take advantage of what I have, my Mac with bootcamp if I feel like gaming. If I get an RX 580 at 8GB and an e-gpu dock, I can satisfy all my gaming needs and I could plug all of that to my 4K TV and game on bootcamp. While I'm satisfying my gaming needs I could start slowly buying parts and then eventually I'll have what I need. So E-GPU or lots and lots of money on a gaming PC console killer?
