Lord Mirdalan reacted to dadhacks in LTT Screwdriver Grip "Mod"
I posted this in response to another post on the Merch sub, but thought I would post here in case anyone was having the same issue as I was. I recently got my LTT Screwdriver and love all the features about it. As hobbyist who tinkers with everything from tech to auto to home reno, this felt like a great "do it all" screwdriver to keep in my home office/hobby room. The only complaint i had was that the handle was very slick and I almost dropped it multiple times. I took the advice from someone on a reddit post to use heat shrink grip wrap and so I started searching for some. Found this stuff on Amazon that was meant for fishing poles and decided to try it out. It worked out amazingly IMO. The designs are fairly limited, but this one looked ok (although I would've preferred a honeycomb design). It feels fantastic in the hand! Grippy and soft, but not too grippy. It is only .5mm thick so it adds little bulk to the handle. Absolutely loving the screwdriver now. Just wanted to share  in case anyone else had the same issue with the slickness that I did.

There are 2 issues in your post. 1 is parenting, 2 is this law.

    You're not a parent.

Did you ever go anywhere your parents told you not to go when you were young?

You also realize that pornhub doesn't have age verification, right?

Basically, real life issues are not relevant online.  Ie.  a 12 year old can't walk into a strip club, but can access porn easily online, even the most depraved and fucked up shit out there.  Can parents stop that?  They could if they were knowledgeable, but technology changes and evolves so fast that even good parents can't keep up with all the new ways kids can do shit.

There are literally dozens of new apps daily that are purpose built for kids to bypass shit.

Raise a child, then come back and talk.

Some coolers require hardware for certain CPUs, that is sold in a separate kit. May want to check the manufacturer's website to see if there is a kit for it.

It's plain old Micro ATX. Only the front panel connectors are proprietary and need modding to work with generic motherboards.

Nope. The mounting hole locations, power supply, and pretty much everything is proprietary in that.

You would be way better off getting a PC case that isn't basically a rehashed 1998 design.

That case would be a nightmare to build a custom PC in, even if you did swap out the PSU, and if the mounting holes lined up.

Oh, snap, is that Socket 370? Yeah, I think it is from 1998... Nope, XP Home, it's from 2006~ish. Maybe Socket 476? Or whatever the early P4's lived in.

32 GB is fine, i never ran out of memory in Premiere and i use to do 4 hour Editing sessions. 64 GB would be just for MASSIVE stuff and i honestly dont know if photoshop would like that in the first place. Save Often remember!

Im honestly surprised you didnt go intel for adobe, as it almost always prefers Intel CPUS for the faster clocks.

    Yes.

The lower end M1 Air or M1 Pro 13", the other ones are likely out of your budget.

Aim for 16GB of RAM and however much storage you think you need (it's not upgradable so you would need to use external drives for anything more than what's inside)

No, you're probably not. M1 Macs are still very new, and with how much Apple products hold their value for whatever reason, the price difference between a used one and a new one is very small, if you can even find one used in general.

If art is a path you want to pursue, I'd recommend subscribing to the $10 "photography" bundle of Adobe Creative Cloud. For some reason it's half the cost of subscribing to Photoshop on its own. Photoshop is the industry standard, so learning and becoming proficient with it will be more helpful in the long run than messing around with freebie mobile apps.

If you just want to dabble, you might want to get better software with more capabilities. GiMP and Paint.NET are both free.

Lord Mirdalan reacted to brob in Architecture Studio good enough workstations
You would do well to consider Intel 12th gen cpu rather than 11th gen. Keep in mind that clock speed is not a great comparator between different CPU architectures. A 12th gen core running at the same speed as an 11th gen core will outperform the later.

Any issues with the hybrid nature of the 12th gen architecture are short term and mostly resolved using Windows 11.

Watch around 15:34 for results that show the i5-12600K beating the i9-11900K in the RevitRFO 2022 Modelling test.

Cases with mesh fronts are preferred there days as they offer much better airflow and thus much better temperatures. Better temperatures mean better cpu performance and lower noise levels. There is a 4000D Airflow model that would be a good choice, although I'm not sure it is available without a glass panel side. A good alternative would be one of the non glass side panel Fractal Design Meshify models. Stock fans on these and the Airflow case are sufficient for the outlined systems.

An 850W PSU far exceeds system requirements. I would suggest something around 650W. My personal preference would be Corsair RM650X or Seasonic GX650. However there are many excellent models available. https://linustechtips.com/topic/1116640-psu-tier-list-40/ is a useful resource. PSU are critical components. They directly affect the stability and longevity of all powered components.

Given the desire for stable, reliable systems, I would look at a locked CPU like the i7-12700 on a B660 or H670 motherboard. You will see a big performance jump without getting into the complexity of modern overclocking. If you do want to try overclocking, an i5-12600K on a Z690 motherboard would be a good choice.

Use NVMe drives, at least for the system and active projects. They offer a significant performance improvement.

I would recommend going local instead of eBay personally, in my experience no one on eBay actually knows how to ship a monitor (I've had 2 different ones arrive cracked because they were improperly packaged) and it sucks having to go through the eBay appeals process because it arrived broken.

Lord Mirdalan reacted to manikyath in Linus mathematical proof for not leaving Adobe is wrong
here's where your math went wrong:

the comparison they made against adobe's efficiency already includes the annoyances they have with adobe, because they are comparing against their current workflow in practisce. so that estimate of time lost in adobe does not matter, because it is part of that 420k editor salary we are working with. (which according to the video did not include office space, hardware cost, etc.)

also, 9.7% efficiency loss (also, what the heck kind of 'estimate' is this?) is ENORMOUS for efficiency loss. that's every employee losing about 45 minutes per day, each day, due to an occasional adobe crash. or because of how efficiency loss works.. that's just about an hour per employee per day extra work (because the time they add falls to the same efficiency loss)

also, i just blasted trough a 2 year old linus video to see where things went off the rails, and then did math on a topic that was already decided by someone whose money and staff is affected.

EDIT: PS, i feel like i should add.. it's safe to assume that the point of the video isnt the exact math, as it is about how insignificant the cost of adobe is compared to the cost of maintaining your staff.

Lord Mirdalan reacted to BondiBlue in Any experience in repairing iMac 2012+ glass?
The glass is part of the display, so if you want to replace the glass you'll have to replace the display as well. If it's just cracked I'd leave it alone. It's a nearly 10 year old computer, so the cost for replacing the display probably wouldn't be worth it.

This is one of the more annoying parts of the design of the iMac. The 2007-2011 iMacs had a front glass panel that was physically separate from the display itself, but the 2012 redesign fused the display and glass together. This improved the display quality (the air gap between the glass and display on the previous models could cause blurring issues at times), but at the cost of repairability.

Also if you are still worrying, you can do windows reinstall directly from windows and it should help along these tools.
