I have done this mod, and it works. Though custom water cooling works better.
Only problem I had was with bleeding the system.
The pump isn't that powerful, and is placed relatively high in the loop, so filling it wasn't easy.
    But the temps were decent.
    Good luck.

I love the corsair aio blocks. I think in my case the pump should be plenty powerful since I'm only swapping the rad and not adding a gpu block and res

Looks to me like the waterblock isn't/wasn't mounted completely flat on the GPU.
If you look at the thermal pads on either side of the GPU, you can clearly see the difference in how much pressure is/was placed on the thermal pads.
Left is good. Right and top is bad. They should be equal.
When tightening the screw on the waterblock, do it in a star pattern a little at a time. This is important if you want the mounting pressure to be even.

When it's no longer enough, start thinking about upgrades. Before that point, don't. Besides, an 8700k already allows a 1080 to stretch its legs as much as it wants, no need to consider a cpu upgrade before you upgrade your gpu here.

A 120mm AIO in my opinion is only really good for small form factor, 240mm is as good as a good air cooler. 280mm and above is where AIO's start to pull away a little.

IMHO Samsung makes the best SSD's for good prices. I'd always get a 970 Evo Plus. currently $100 for 500gb

The fan rpm is too high to keep that temp.

Enter BIOS, check temperature of CPU. If very hot, then it's likely because the thermal paste disintegrated after 19 years of use. Remove CPU heatsink, clean and re-paste  Wouldn't post most likely if a component died. If ram died, you would most likely get BSOD.

Should probably seperate Aio and custom water loop.

To me it sounds like you're a little over-sensitive. Yeah buying refurbished tech items isn't a bad idea, but who cares? If your friend wants to buy expensive equipment that's his business.

I took apart my Corsair H115i and spliced a GPU in to the loop, with a small reservoir.
It worked well, but the pump had to run at max rpm all the time to keep the flow going.
I used soft tubing and fittings made for the tubing.

    Hi Guys.

Here is my first real attempt at water cooling with hard tubing.
Took a long time to finish and a lot of tries to get a point where I was satisfied with the result. Precision bends are pretty hard... 😉

from this description my first guess is that the pump is not running. You can listen to hear if it's making noise, but it may still be broken even if the motor is running.
