Try closing any program(s) that are using Hardware acceleration (internet browsers, video players, even Discord by default). Then also kill ApplicationFrameHost.exe from the task manager if it is running (it manages all the windows 10 apps, so if any are running it will close them).

Also Optimal is better than Adaptive for keeping the GPU at a lower power state.

I think it's because of your cpu, A cpu has a number of PCIE lanes it can use for perferolse. You gpu can take any ware form 1x to 16x. Try and manly see it can only use 1x lane and set your 1080 to 8X. This includes your nethework and I/O

its under perferolse in your BIOS

A list of spec's would help.

But pulling the CMOS battery while the GPU is installed and the computer is off is a start.

Also try using cables with no adapters preferably HDMI to HDMI straight to the monitor. I've had a problem like this when my HDMI TO DVI-D adapter was a slight bit loose just a complete black screen.

I believe that the GPU has lived it's life well but here is some fighting steps.

    Try another PCIe slot.

Take a can of compressed air to the PCIe slots.

Pull the CMOS battery while your in to reset the bios config.

Reinstall the drivers from the OEM site.

Final STEP - Reinstall the OS.

Keep in mind it's a 5 year old GPU with lots of runtime I assume.
