katoptrys got a reaction from Metaformed in Do I need an Amp/DAC?
Hm. I would not personally trust a motherboard to be able to push anything north of 100-ish ohm, let lone 250 or even 600. As much as they may advertise, there is a LOT of noise inside your computer and I'd go as far as to say I can hear a difference with my 50 ohm HD598. You will NOT get a clear sound signal.
You might struggle to drive them. I'd say a DAC is not necessary unless you want a boost to sound quality, but I'd find a decent AMP for those cans. If you want something lasting and good quality, I'd go with a Schiit Magni, it's about 100 bucks and generally great unless you're working with EXTREMELY high res stuff like professional audio. You can always also upgrade your set down the road with a Modi, which is their DAC, for another 100. Magni + Modi is a pretty decent kit. If you need something a bit more budget they have a combo called Fulla for 100 bucks but I haven't tried it personally, or you could go with a Fiio combo like the E10K, they are also a very decent brand.

katoptrys got a reaction from DevilsHand676 in An air cooler better than an aio?
Well, the H60 is only a 120mm so there is only so much it can cool. Depending on how much you OC/undervolt your CPU you might be able to squeeze better temps out of it. I had the same AIO until the pump crapped out on me a couple of weeks ago, but usually under an intense load I'd get 70C at 3.9 GHz (I had my voltage set up at 1.45).
As far as air coolers go, I'd recommend a Dark Rock 4 from bequiet, it's about 160mm IIRC but performance should be great and they are, as the name of the brand states, very quiet.

32 GB of RAM feels kind of unneccessary, IMO. Unless you need it for some other task, you should be fine with 16GB and use the money for a better cooling solution

katoptrys got a reaction from PorkishPig in Question
Anything above 3200 MHz is not guaranteed to work. Even 3200 can be tricky at times. This applies to all AM4 boards, not just MSI or B350.
Also, if you are still picking your parts, go with a different motherboard manufacturer, best options are Asus and AsRock for AMD (My mobo was an aesthetic choice and was also limited by what there was here)

Check ifixit, they usually have guides on how to do it yourself. And if not, youtube can be a valuable tool.
It can be time consuming, and also you have to be very careful, but 150 dollars is a bit absurd if you ask me

katoptrys got a reaction from dv_cali in i7 8700K Cooler - Any inputs?
If it fits in the case, you could go with a Dark Rock 3 from bequiet or a Noctua DH-15, in case you want to do overclocking later on. Those are also close to the 100 dollar limit

The NZXT 400i might be good for a mATX build. It has a built in fan and RGB controller, as far as I'm aware. Plus the case seems good enough on its own

katoptrys got a reaction from Spudbilly in 7700k or 8700
The 8700 is a far more solid choice, I believe. You could also wait and see what Ryzen 2 looks like in a few months, but currently the 8th gen Intel is a far better choice over the 7th (especially in the music production area, the extra cores work wonders when encoding high quality audio)

katoptrys got a reaction from Tech22 in XE rad in H200i
Considering it is a 240mm rad for both a CPU and GPU, I'd be careful with overclocking. You also need to be careful of the gpu length, as he showed that with a slim rad a large GPU was very close to the fans/rad

katoptrys got a reaction from NPSTR107 in PC not showing any output - Ryzen Requires GPU Output
Also important recommendation. Use the box of the motherboard as a testbench, not the anti-static bag, as that is only anti-static in the inside and can actually fry your components if it builds up

Is it an AMD or an intel build? If it's Ryzen, you won't be able to get a video out as it doesn't come with graphics and requires a GPU

Blackwidow Chroma Tournament Edition (The Tenkeyless one). I got it used for less than I would have paid for any new mechanical keyboard and it was worth it (only 1 LED works weird, but whatever)

Dark rock is about the same price as the Noctua, it is the high end air cooler from Bequiet, so nevermind.
If it's a budget build... I'd say hold off on the 212 Evo, use the stock cooler for a while until you can get the Noctua DH-15. That is about as good as it gets.

I can't go over 3.9 on mine, no matter the voltage (I've even tried 1.45 and it wasn't stable). You actually won the sillicon lottery, it's rare for ryzen to go over 4

katoptrys got a reaction from genexis_x in Will it run games in QHD?
It will probably be better to go Ryzen and 1050 Ti. The GPU will have a larger impact in games, and if you get a B350 board (they aren't very expensive), you can do some light overclocking to squeeze out some more performance

The GPU will probably struggle in QHD. Even in older titles. A 1050 Ti might do the trick if you don't aim for too high quality

Skullcandy is a bit more brand than audio quality. You'd be better off with Sennheiser, AKG or Audio Technica (Audio quality is a lot better)

I'd recommend a 1200 instead of the 1300X, since you are going B350 you can overclock it manually (and it won't give you any extra headroom)

katoptrys got a reaction from CrippledROBOT in Need guidance on CPU upgrade
The X variants of the Ryzen chips aren't worth it. Go for a 1700, and overclock it manually, you'll get about the same results plus a pretty decent cooler.

The 1800X isn't worth it, go for a 1700 and overclock it manually. Also, if possible pick a board from Asus or AsRock, they are the best where AMD is concerned.

In multithreaded use, the Ryzen beats intel, and it doesn't lag -that- far behind in games
