  1. Hi, Asus's workstation/server boards are very stable, I've had one for 4 years already and it's still working nicely (the Z9NA-D6). I would take the P10S for it's layout which is better in a rackmounted chassis. Otherwise, you'll be likely getting the same build quality and functionnality.
  2. Audio is almost always an added chipset. As long as your motherboard supports it, you can make almost any device passthrough to your vm, the integrated SATA controller is one of the few exceptions I believe.
  3. Well I would say for a small business, yes, but nothing overkill. As Kenji said, it also depends on the hardware you have, pentium 4 or newer will be ok to use but use new hard drives and keep the old ones for backup.
  4. I agree. ESXi cycle of developpement is slow so the 6.5 version doesn't run perfectly with AM4 cpu's at this time, you'll have to deactivate smt (https://www.servethehome.com/amd-ryzen-working-with-vmware-esxi-6-5/). I would suggest XenServer or why not Hyper V which is also free ( but things get a little more complicated to connect to the server).
  5. I've got 2 Asrock AM4 motherboards and I can confirm that they both support ECC ram in ECC mode, even the lowest end ones.
  6. Microservers gen8 are very suitable for that and the base model is really cheap. Gen 10 microserver is still very hard to find and is more expensive. Now building a racked server is fine imo but of course it takes more place. Open Media Vault is very user friendly if looking for an easy to setup solution.
  7. We could do a survey to determine which games most of us are playing. I could also host one myself in the eu.
  8. 2$ is indeed a nice price. As Jarsky said, you have a lot of options on learning. Are you planning on doing any nas, domain controller, plex server,...? If you plan to run multiple os, you can already start with vmware esxi (or microsoft hyper v if you wish) to be able to install some virtual machines. And by the way, servers can be very silent.
  9. Nah, just unlucky I guess but hey, we're 2 to have the roughly the same issue. That's already my second board by the way. Still have a spare DDR4 stick to try but there's not much hope on my side either.
  10. Yep, I think you'll have to send it back sadly.
  11. Have you tried to let the ram frequency to 2133 to see if it could solve anything (I doubt it will honestly)? Maybe test with another graphics card if you have one but this really makes me think of a motherboard problem.
  12. For the moment I also got odd problems with my Ryzen system. Screen just goes black and usb peripherals just shut down. I'd bet also for a motherboard oe ram problem. Do you have any other ram sticks to test it?
  13. I would add the socket 3647, the newest for xeon scalable. Even more expensive. Built my latest server based on dual socket 2011-0. It works more than perfectly and is not power hungry at all.
  14. If you equip a 2u chassis with quiet fans, you'll end up having something decently silent (I did it and had a quite suprising result, even tried in a 1u chassis). It'll be extra costs however. The supermicro chassis you told about is great but you'll have to work a bit to fit the back i/o. For a long term storage nas, a pentium or celeron is usually enough, if you are sure never wanting to do more than that, I would go that route.
  15. Hi guys, The server is finally ready, here are the final pics of it And one with the lights out Still have to replace the stock 120mm fans with some Arctic cooling PST-CO fans but the stock ones are not as noisy as I'd thought And maybe do something a little better for cable management... Note that Intel AF-DA 10Gb NICs tend to heat a lot so I did some ghetto fan mod to keep it cool
  16. How long have you been having this problem? Which version are you using? Was it after any kind of update?
  17. Thank you for your replies, I'll try not to worry about it until there would be a problem. The deal should be concluded in two weeks, let's pray there won't be any hickups.
  18. Thanks I hesitated to get a microserver before having the 19" rack but finally I chose the overkill Recieved the second 2630v2 by the way, can't wait to place it on the board
  19. Thanks for your awnser. Though I know there's a lot of teenagers on the forum, we are also a good proportion of grown-ups, but the reason why I placed this thought here was that so far, every person I met that meant to be "helpful" for my independant pharmacist career where, in the end, very unhelpful and worse. There is a clause that nullifies the agreement in case the other party can't have the financing. Primarily I prefer concentrating on the sale and see what happens next but this morning I had this terrible thought that the condition of the company is limit and if the sale does not go on, there's no Plan B.
  20. Hi Guys, I'm a little stressed right now and have a doubt. Long story short: I'm a pharmacist and own my own pharmacy. I've had lots and lots of troubles with this company, I paid too much for the pharmacy itself (650.000€+550.000€), I've had two bad accountants, who made it that I'm now stuck with 140.000€ debt in favour of my company and my company has 450.000€ debt with the bank and the bank set the credit so that I'm personnally responsible for it. In this company was also another company: a beauty institute, which is now closed and the owner lended 150.000€ to that one. I'm stuck to refund him of this money. I'm selling my company now and there's someone interested. With the money he will pay I'll get me out of debts. But what do I do if finally his bank wont lend him the money? Monthly charges are so high I've got to inject money but I've no more money for this and I'm done for if I go for bankruptcy (Mentality here makes you blacklisted for any kind of credit in the future). I'm really wondering what is gonna happend.
  21. Hi guys, I received the motherboard on saturday and started building the server. Here is the first pic I took The inter tech 4129-n is massive next to all my other chassis. I bought it discounted several months ago but I kept it in my garage in case I needed a big chassis. When in the box it just didn't feel so big. Still waiting for my second e5 2630v2 to arrive today so I'll be able to make some progress this evening. Here are the final specs of the build: Chassis: Inter Tech 4129-N SSI-EEB PSU: Seasonic SS-660XP 660W Motherboard: ASRock Rack EP2C602 CPU's: 2x 2630V2 6 cores @2.6GHz RAM: 8x8Gb DDR3 ECC RDIMM from Crucial Coolers: 2xIntel BXTS13A Storage: 2x Intel 530 SSD 240Gb, 4x 3Tb Seagate Ironwolf Others: Intel AF-DA 10Gb NIC, Dell PERC H310 SATA/SAS adapter and an ICY BOX backplane
  22. As I already had DDR3 and 4, no problem with that, but I'd hate to have to buy some more at the moment. I love Microservers by the way, great, space saving and reliable machines. I have one at work I assume that 2 E5-2630v2 and 64gb RAM is... a bit overkill. But I wanted to reuse some of the stuff I had lying on shelves. What I planned to do is: NAS VM with the PERC h310 card, 4 Ironwolf 3tb, 4 cores and 16gb of ram under freenas. "Work" VM with 12 cores and 24gb of RAM as it's shared between my girlfriend and I and I do a lot of photo editing so more cores usualy help a bit. Domain controller vm with 2 cores and 4gb RAM. That leaves me with some resources left for some other vm fun And I think I'm also doing it for fun Would have been a nice upgrade from the 1607v2 I have at work But I won't be here anymore in the short term...
