  1. Sometimes facebook timelines have an excellent sense of humor:
  2. Out of curiosity, does anyone know why the browser doesn't do some sort of machine ID check before just openly accessing stored session tokens? I know there would still be ways around this but it raises the skill level required for these attacks pretty substantially.
  3. So I bought an RZ50 a year ago, received in January, and since about two months in it has output a loud static noise from the center channel intermittently. I sent it out to a service center in March and got it back in April but the issue was still occurring as soon as it was powered on. Since it was intermittent, I lived with it for another couple of months but got fed up with it and sent it out again in July. The 2nd service center apparently found an issue with the center channel and replaced various components on the board to correct it. I got the receiver back in September but had by then purchased a different receiver because I didn't know when the RZ50 would come back, so I didn't test the RZ50 until about a month later. To my dismay, when I tested it again the issue was STILL occurring the moment it was powered on. It's been at the service center again since the beginning of November and they have been unable to recreate the issue at their location. This means that it may be sent back to me unrepaired with only a month of warranty left. I have been working in tech for over 12 years and have tested everything that I could possibly think of to attempt to identify the possible cause, including but not limited to: Testing with different speakers and speaker wire Testing in different physical locations Testing the unit on different power sources (wall, surge protector, and a UPS running on battery) Testing with no other devices attached Reflashing firmware Additionally, nothing in settings has any impact on the sound, nor does changing inputs. As long as the amplifier for the center channel is active, there is a good chance the sound will occur. I have loads of other audio equipment and nothing else has this issue. At this point I've purchased a $1400 paperweight. The last time I reached out to Onkyo support I didn't even get a response, and no one on their phone support team can do anything. Is there anyone that can please help me get in touch with someone at Onkyo that can do something? I'm out of options and don't know what else to do.
  4. The issue is that HDMI is the only standard available that can carry uncompressed audio above 2 channels, as well as any of the more recent encoded formats from Dolby or DTS. This wouldn't be much of an issue if we were just using a sound bar or PC speakers, but in this case we have a full Atmos setup, so HDMI is the only option.
  5. So I've been working on an issue that I ran into while helping my brother with his HTPC setup. He has a Dolby Atmos surround setup and the LG C9. The problem here is as follows: 1. Hooking the PC up to the receiver, then passing the video through, will give you full audio functionality, but (for the vast majority of the receivers on the market) limit your video options to HDMI 2.0. Refresh rates higher than 60hz also do not always function correctly 2. If you hook the PC up directly to the TV, there are two issues. You are unable to send more than two channels of PCM to pass through via ARC and any bitstreamed audio (Dolby surround, Atmos, etc.) has a very substantial delay to the point of uselessness. The delay actually seems to affect any external device attempting to stream Dolby encoded audio via ARC, but does not occur with content streamed from the TV itself Rtings was able to bypass the stereo audio limitation by editing the EDID of the display, but in my testing that proved to be unstable in normal use, and while a second HDMI cable to each device is valid as a workaround, it should not be necessary. These issues are fixable directly by LG via software updates. The PCM issue is a software limitation (this was pointed out by Rtings in their review), as is the delay on bitsteamed audio. There is currently a petition to hopefully resolve these issues, but I'm hoping to bring more attention to this through this community. This years LG OLEDs are excellent gaming displays, but these limitations severely limit the consumers options, especially with the upcoming Gsync update.
  6. Ok, I've replaced the ugly apogee with a standard EK block and moved to a DDC pump/res. Feels like we're getting closer to a final version, who else can come up with ideas
  7. Thank you! Bottom clearance for cable management is 3/4", and I'm ordering cablemod cables to custom length, so excess shouldn't be an issue. I do agree that the apogee is pretty ugly, and it's placement in relation to the res is pretty poor (filling might be a challenge), but I couldn't come up with an alternative as of yet. I might try moving it next to the PSU since I have a bit of space there now.
  8. Ok, new case design is up! Let me know what you think
  9. So I'm redesigning a second version of the case with this in mind, with the sides being 1/2". So far it looks solid, and I'll add pics when it's done. Thank you!
  10. Yeah, ideally I would have designed for greater thickness, but due to space constraints I can't go thicker than 1/4" and still fit in everything. I was actually going to do a quick poly finish on the bare wood/MDF, then use vinyl to cover it. Doing that I could make the entire case look like a single piece. I do love the custom Minwax stains, though. I used that when I refinished one of my guitars
  11. Good to know! My very first choice was 1/4" birch plywood before I moved to MDF, do you think that would be better?
  12. Ok, I'm looking into replacing the MDF with HDPE (plastic) for my building material. This is more expensive, but it might have a pretty big strength advantage. Has anyone here built a case using this?
  13. Thanks for the replies so far! I've updated the OP for greater detail and clarity
  14. @Hiitchy Thank you! I did consider another fan, but due to size constraints, I would only be able to add a 92mm or 80mm, which would be noisier than I would like. I should mention, though, that this case is going in a media center that has ventilation in the wall directly behind it, so the heat should dissipate pretty well. @jcw150 I will be using 1/4" MDF. My biggest concern was how well that would hold up to the fine cuts required for this (most being 1/8" pockets), and I'll be using wood glue to put it together.
