My sibling completed his Mechanical Engineering degree with an Acer 5742G with a little dual core Core i3 paired with a HD5450. 4GBs of RAM, later upgraded to 8GB during his final year. Not sure how the hell that thing ran Solidworks like it was nothing.

then it looks pretty good. check to see if you can upgrade its ram, which i thiink is useful for simulations. 32GB ram really helps for video editing and 3d simulations. My friend does 3d simulations of aerodynamics and has a 64GB ram laptop.

Overclocked the monitor to 70hz. Did some benchmarking without v-sync and everything appears to be working better than before with no screen-tearing. Thanks for the help.

The S340 is a nice case for air cooling (radiator support is lacking somewhat). If it's a glossy black, it will attract (and show) dust and finger prints a lot. If it's a white version, dust and finger prints won't show as much. If you just keep a cloth nearby, it only takes a few seconds to give it a quick wipedown to remove dust. Removing finger prints may need a plastic cleaner as just cloths can spread the oil.

8gb flash drives are cheap. Also I have the Pro case and it's nice.
