Thank you for the answer. Finally some one that answers to the question

overdoing memory overclock will introduce artifacting and unusual colors. i've done it once before all in without going steady, never doing that again. go slowly up.
worst case scenario just reset/force power off, and the settings will revert back to normal

both cases will crash eventually, core clock is just a frozen frame... while memory nets u random artifacts if overdone beyond limit

1080 Ti. I regret my 1080 SLI. It doesn't work in most games and is slower than a single 1080 in Dota 2.

Start a new thread please it doesnt hurt to do so. Ressurrecting threads is kinda ugh

i probably would side towards a single card 1080 ti personally. 1080 sli can be quite expensive at least with the 1080ti if u ever need extra performance u can add another 1080ti later on if needed... also some games can hv problem with sli compatibility so keep that in mind

it should be, given the motherboard initial releases have at least 3 x8/x16 [x8 x8 in sli] pcie slots on the standard atx side.
    micro/itx slightly lesser*

well, screw me tight this is pleasing to see, seems like intel nailed it with this one, providing a modest boost in core/threads to allow slightly better workloads whilst improving game performance all at the same time... it even bests the 7700k at stock auto speeds ._. haha, you'll be surely impressed with this upgrade 4 sure

but then again hes testing it on 1080p so not too relevant to me since im on 1440p  [fingers crossed]

oh i wasn't saying that u said the 7700 was a sh*t cpu [i use a 7700k but only cos it was about 290usd at the time i bought it brand new] i was just reaffirming her statement one way or another

i personally wouldn't pay the original rrp haha at that time i bought it [479aud => 380usd] so the savings were enough for me to justify it despite knowing a successor looms around the corner.

true, playing early adopter is never the cheapest to begin with...

imo i agree with you, the 7700 is still a good cpu , obviously a successor has bypassed it, but that doesn't mean the 7700 is "obsolete or dead"... it still will sell for a bit until the next generation comes [when it then gets phased out].

also depends on what resolution you game at predominantly, cpu performance becomes more critical espscially at 1080p, but not too much at 1440p (i think? high fps) / 4k

You're thinking on this completely wrong, first with your reduced budget you should make as much use as you can from what you already own, get a Ryzen 5 or a CL i5 will cost you all you can afford and not be the ideal solution.

The right step here in my opinion is keep every thing you have, update your motherboard BIOS and throw an i7 7700 on it, this alone will be a huge upgrade from the i3 6100 and probably's going to be enough to all you want to do, while being by far the cheapest path as you can re-use just about every thing.

That's why Skylake and Kaby Lake 6700/7700 k's were able to fit on the current z270/z170 with a bios update [for 6700k on z270 chipset]...

but i do welcome this change though, it will mean cofee lake will be good at both gaming and work related tasks while striking a balance between both

Yea the die on Coffee lake is larger, you will need a new mobo like it or not despite the pin socket still being "1151".

I haven't looked at benchmarks, but it should. Though what res? An i5 could easily handle a 1080 Ti at 4K. At massive resolutions the GPU becomes the bottleneck, not the CPU.

Lol if you want to get a 1080ti like what i did its okay if u got the funds but also be prepared to put it either on ultrawide 34” 3440x1440 at 100hz monitor or a widescreen 1440p with 144-165hz or a 4k 60fps monitor. Keep that in mind, wud be a waste to game 1080p 60 with that

1080ti is redundant for 1080p gaming high frame or not... a 1070 shud serve you fine wih a few settings lowered if u really want to play high framerate gaming but then I think ur cpu might bottleneck u in that case give or take

for me i find the best contender in my current experience is an widescreen 27” 1440p with 165hz max frame rate n gsync/ips with a 1080ti . Its amazing. Its not always consistent 165hz but as long i stay above 110-120fps its freaking heaven. If u dont want that 144-165hz 1440p monitor but a 60hz a 1070 should serve u fine in this scenario for most games with a few settings tweaked when nececessary

Agreed. Unless you are like me and ride your graphics to death or near end life with no hopes of reselling ???. Went from 7870 to 1080ti so can figure how long i have held back ...

primarily my reason (and if anyone wants to share the same sentiment) . High framerate gaming & res bump 1080p 60hz to 1440p approx 140Hz*

think ill be stuck with this monitor for about 8 years, it wasnt a cheap purchase by all means.... 900aud is quite alot for a gsync 1440p165hz. An upgrade can only be justified if change in resolution or new screen tech thats just hard to resist or a leapfrog in gaming performance for same or lesser price

Then 980ti will have even less value as well so he will spend about as much money then as he would spend now.
I would just keep the 980ti tbh, it is still a beast of a GPU

Personally I'll recommend the 1080Ti now, still no competition and the best. Even on widescreen 1440p I'm netting 120-150fps average on most games whicfh is beyond amazing. As long as I don't dip 100fps I'm fine. So assuming taking extra pixels into account per frame rate, you should float around 80-100fps with that card.

xsimplyjosh reacted to serguzzle in GTX 1080 Ti, are you that impressed?
The 1080Ti is legitimately impressive hardware. You've doubled the load on your card and you're getting about the same performance -- yeah, sounds about right if you've got the starts of CPU bottlenecking there. I upgraded from 1070 SLI to one 1080Ti and at 3440:1440 I am getting both significantly higher performance on games, but significantly lower thermal loads on my system.

My GTA V benchmarks showed a delta of roughly 10 FPS on each pass when I changed my cards around, and 15+ FPS on passes 3 and 4, and I managed ~70 FPS under totally max settings for 1440p UW. This sadly meant that I had to lower some of the extras to get a smooth 75 FPS for my XR342CK. Frame timings also decreased by 2-3 ms consistently. Playing Witcher 3, which is a little better about SLI, I still saw an increase of about 5-10 FPS during most loading scenarios -- likely due to thermals on one card being significantly better. Playing some less-optimized games like Secret World Legends, I achieved notably less stutter at max settings.

Comparing it to the 1070, which is in of itself a tremendous card? The 1080Ti is insane, I have benchmarks from my original 1070 and we're talking over 2x performance in GTA V. Comparing it to two 1070s? Still a notable bump in performance. Now, yeah, 165 Hz 1440p screens might not be able to achieve full performance with even a 1080Ti, but that's because the 1080Ti targets 60 Hz 4k as its endgame market. High-frequency high-resolution displays are still kind of novel, and the market hasn't really delved into them yet. So obviously, it's not the lord and savior, but it's still miles ahead of anything else on the market.

For color accuracy, nothing can beat an IPS panel monitor as of now, especially if you're able to invest well in a 10Bit type. There are a few out there.
OLED as much looks nice, I still think does not have the edge over IPS in terms of cololr accuracy if that's something you are concerned.
Also OLED panels are relatively expensive, and carry the negative of burn-in especially during long periods of on-time...

just a few things to consider i hope it helps.

On game like Ghost recon Wildland or Black Desert online i don't think so.
It will just depend of the game, for some a 1080Ti won't do the job.
Simply because they are poorly optimised.

Imo unless you have a very high budget, 1080Ti for 1080p is a bad choice.
A 1080 can handle any well optimised game with ease.
And poorly optimised ones won't run that well even with a Ti.

A 1070 is perfect for 1080p 144hz, a 1080TI for 1080p is way too overkill and not really worth it in my eyes. If you had a 1440p 144hz or 4k panel then a 1080TI would be a good choice.
