    Cryorig's R1 has a 30 ~ 35 mm ram clearance height

It's a really good cooler. Would recommend it.

The AiO units are pretty reliable, they've a lot less chance of leaking than a fully custom loop, but replacing the fans would be a good bet. There's no air cooler that compares to it that won't block the first PCI-E slot, as the NH-D-15, Dark Rock pro 3 and cryorig R1 ultimate will all block the first lane. If replace the fans with noiseblocker eloops, black silent pros or noctua NF-F12s to reduce noise levels p, or if you can find them, some gengle typhoons.

Plus you can remove the outside fan and just use the one between the two stacks, although that'll hurt temps a bit more.

The fan size is not an issue, the fan can be moved up slightly with negligible performance loss (1C hotter worst case scenario) and the NH-D15 both performs slightly better and has those recessed fins for compatibility

I use a Noctua U14S with two fans with standard profile RAM in all slots. Great cooler, but I don't overclock.

How about the noctua NH-D15? That has the notches in it to allow for tall ram heatsinks and isn't too bad at overhanging the PCI-E lanes.

noctual d-14 rather than the d-15 because it was 1x 140mm and 1x 120mm rather than 2x 140mm, so it has more ram cleaance

NH-D15 has recessed fins for high-profile RAM compatibility. My friend is running one with Trident X RAM now (Those are tall). All you need to do is maybe increase one of the fans in height but that's it

If you're looking for quiet, then have you considered just changing the fans on your h100i and altering the fan curves? That might be the quietest, and most cost effective solution.

lunchboxdeluxe reacted to Faceman in Highest graphics for FX
People think they are getting a good deal when they buy an FX for gaming, and they are not.
If you enjoy games like MMOs(ArcheAge, WoW, Guild Wars2, World of Tanks, Planetside2 etc..) DayZ, ARMA2, ARMA3, Dead Rising 3, Indies, RTS, Emulators, etc.. the FX will fall WAY behind the equally priced Intel processors, and in some instances, become unplayable unless you are fine with 15-20fps when the action starts.
Then there are other games that are playable, but no where near as fluid as they would be on Intel because minimum framerates(which are the most important), drop much more significantly with FX processors. A few examples are: Starcraft, Skyrim, Civilization V, Assassin's Creed, etc..
Then there are a lot of games where the FX will perform similar to Intel, provided you're using a 60Hz Monitor and don't see the bottleneck happening.
For the majority of games, the FX will be fine. But why would you want to spend more or the same amount of money on an old, and inferior product, when you can get a new and superior product for the same amount of money. Why play 4 out of 5 games well, when you can play 5 out of 5 games well, with no bottlenecking, lower energy costs, and future upgrade paths. That is what Intel provides. You will see below that even the less expensive Intel i3 is outperforming the FX8s in many games, and the locked i5 is running away with it.
I always advocate the right tool for the job, and for some jobs, the FX processor is the best tool for the job, but you need to be aware of what your priorities are when building your machine. If your priority is gaming, then Intel is the clear winner regardless of price point. I don't hate AMD, and I have experience with both processors, and have owned both Intel and AMD. My goal here is to help others by avoiding costly mistakes that so many before them have made. I see so many users on this forum complaining about their gaming experience with FX processors that it is time to put a stop to it, and the best way to do that is nip it in the bud and recommend the correct tool for the job. The most common problems are unsatisfactory results in certain games, VRM throttling, and GPU bottlenecking. In my links below I will show you many different, yet conclusive results compiled from respected hardware reviewers and other members of this forum. I hope to paint a picture as to why the FX processor is the inferior option and why it is a bad choice for a gaming machine.

Pop down to your local PC shop and buy a new one, or call ahead and see if they'll allow you to bring your PC in and try it onsite before you buy. You might get lucky if they're feeling nice.

I have no doubt the shield tablet is a good tablet, that's what I've heard... but if you don't need a traditional tablet, look into the shield portable too, the original with the controller attached. It makes a great stand, and I use it absolutely all the time. Great for emulation and gamestream and good old fashioned youtube on the bathroom counter while I shower.

lunchboxdeluxe reacted to Faceman in Why Do People Say That The EVGA 970 Is Terrible?
Uhm.. EVGA is amazing.  I will forever buy EVGA GPUs, and their products in general because of how I have been treated by them on multiple occasions, for a multitude of different things.

MIRs:  The absolute fastest in the business.  Most companies take 6-8 weeks.  The three times I've done an MIR with EVGA, it took 4-5 weeks, AND they let you choose between check and gift card.  Check please!

RMA:  This is where they really blew my socks off.  The process was so fast, so painless, and everyone I spoke to was knowledgeable, friendly, and knew exactly what they were talking about, what my concerns were, and how to proceed.  It took 9 business days including the day I sent my card to them, to get a new card back.  This is travel from Florida to California and back.

Water Cooling:  EVGA allows you to water cool and take apart your GPU without voiding the warranty.  Can't say the same about every other company out there.

Asking a question:  Whether it was on the phone or through email, the people I spoke to were extremely adept at answering my questions and at no point did I feel like I was speaking to someone who didn't "understand" the nuances of gaming and technology.  These people are trained incredibly well, and it shows.

Step-Up Program:  This is not something I personally took part in, but it is available only through EVGA.  Its a fantastic offering that is really quite appealing and unique.

    -----------------------------------
Yes, the recent batch of 900 series EVGA cards have gotten a lot of bad publicity because their fans were too noisy when first launched, and their ACX Cooler isn't fully covering the GPU die.  What does this mean?  Not much now because they have fixed the fan problem with a firmware update, even including a no-fan-spin mode, and the cooler not fully covering the GPU die is not that big of an issue.  In the 970/980 roundups I've seen, the EVGA card is only trailing by 1-2C, that is not a massive amount, and pretty much within the margin of error.  Lets not forget that their cards are the least expensive coming in at $330 compared to $350+ for the competition's 970s.

I will gladly, gladly take 1-2C higher temperatures and all of the benefits of having a card backed by EVGA than go with any other brand because I know what I'm getting with EVGA and that is exemplary service and a company that stands behind their products.

The aspire S7 meets all of yours with only 2 compromises, it's got hd 4400 instead of 4600 graphics and it has a 1440p screen instead of 1080p which I only put as a compromise since you may prefer 1080 over a higher res as well.

I just landed a tech job today that will include going out to remote sites to fix PCs and servers, stuff like that. I'm pretty psyched. I want to get a laptop to use at work and do steam home streaming / some gaming (probably somewhat older games). Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Requirements
    Absolute maximum budget is $2000.
Has to be touchscreen and Windows 8.1. I need to gain experience with Win 8 before I start my job.
Battery life is a big deal to me.
I'd rather have a 1080p screen than something lower.
Intel HD graphics is sufficient, but I'd like it to be a higher end version, like the 4600.
    I'd prefer SSD.
High build quality is key, this will be coming with me everywhere.

I was looking at the Surface Pro 3 since it hits most of my requirements, but the top of the line one is pretty pricy and I'm not completely sold on the formfactor. Anything that fits my list without too many compromises?

    Many thanks for your help!

1.The 4930k is a great CPU, but for $3500 you should be getting nearly top-of the-line stuff. Right now that means an x99 mobo and DDR4
    2. I'd allocate a little more money and get SLI gtx980s, or just get one and SLI later.
    3. Every touch fan controller I've ever seen/used has been unresponsive and cruddy. Not sure about that one specifically but yeahhhhh. NZXT makes some good manual ones if you really want a front-mounted fan controller. I have the NZXT Sentry Mix 2 controller, not flashy but works great.
    4. Unless you do much more gaming than professional work, I would tend to probably pick a monitor that isn't TN.

    Console gaming IS good.

I prefer to play mostly on PC myself these days, but that doesn't mean I have to be totally blind to all the great games that come out every year for consoles. That would be dumb. I have an Xbox 360 on my desk next to my PC, and it's been a great system. Spent hundreds of hours on it, and the newer consoles are the same way.

Is it disappointing that both mainstream current-gen consoles are underpowered compared to our beastly rigs? Yes.

Does it mean console gaming isn't fun? Christ, no.
