Metalshark got a reaction from jopoy in Had a great time and have two requests for LTX 2020
It was a really great event but two big requests for next year:

    1) Add a queue management system. Please let us grab a ticket number or use our mobiles to grab a spot in the queue and do something else with our time (watch a panel, play with the exhibits, catch a game on the BYOC, etc) instead of standing in queues for hours on end. John kinda did this on his blindfolded cable management, but there was no mobile app or screens showing ticket numbers for us to easily gauge when to come back, so had to keep popping back to see how fast groups were progressing.

    2) Human temperatures for the BYOC at night. Please don't let the BYOC freeze at night temperature-wise. Either that or continue selling merch (you'd have sold out of hoodies come 2 AM).

Thank you and hope to make it to LTX 2020!

@CPotter Thank you! Queue management gets my vote if it comes down to a choice. The 2+ hour queues sucked a lot of enjoyment out of the event, with the net effect of making people want to do less instead of more. It was disheartening to see people queue up behind us, wait for over an hour, then give up and do something else (although got very well acquainted with folk both before and after us).

On the positive side at least the low temps got a lot of us being creative at balancing FPS vs Power Viruses and hot air recycling techniques. Silva from Dreamhack also feels bad about it as he HAD THE POWA!

Metalshark reacted to seagate_surfer in Can I use NAS drive in a PC or a DAS?
There is a "feature" to put it in a way that can be de-enabled to help reduce noise (PowerControl) but first a little background on why Seagate uses proprietary technology that can be disabled and why it is not disabled by default. In HDDs standards, there is one that's used as an automatic power-saving feature that is activated during very brief periods of command inactivity without impacting performance, it is called PowerTrim technology, but PowerChoice now called Power Control technology (a proprietary implementation of T10 Approved Standard No T10/09-054 and T13 Standard No T13/452-2008) complements PowerTrim technology by enabling even greater power reductions that cover idle periods greater than one second. The result? PowerChoice technology decreases drive power consumption by up to 54 percent in enterprise environments. For example, a 1U rack filled with twenty-four 500 GB Constellation drives that have entered PowerChoice technology C mode delivers 12 TB of storage, yet consumes only 43W or slightly more power than a single 40W light bulb! Delivering a combination of energy efficiency and user flexibility.

Now I introduce you SeaChest, to use this tool you have to be familiar with executing command lines or it will complicate everything a bit, the download link is here: https://www.seagate.com/support/software/seachest/ To learn more about PowerChoice (PowerControl) you can open the User Manual from the link above and go to the section:
================================ How PowerChoice Technology Works ================================ I will now paste some screenshots of the command lines that will help you disable PowerControl and thus getting a lower noise from the HDD that support this:
How to disable EPC (Extended Power Conditions)
Note: PowerChoice has now been replaced with PowerControl
Download the latest SeaChest and install it in Windows. Next, confirm if EPC is supported and Enabled for the drive in question. First. get the drive's Handle which could be PD0, PD1, or PD2, etc. Copy and Paste or type in this command then Enter: SeaChest_PowerControl --scan

Now copy and paste or type in this command then Enter. SeaChest_PowerControl -d PD(N)
Replace (N) with the handle of the target disk
Scroll to Features Supported and look for EPC [Enabled]

To disable EPC on the drive Copy and paste or type this command then Enter: SeaChest_PowerControl -d PD(N) --EPCfeature disable
Replace (N) with the handle of the target disk
Wait for a message stating EPC was disabled successfully

Now we need to confirm that EPC is disabled. Repeat step 3, Copy and paste or type in this command then Enter SeaChest_PowerControl -d PD(N)
Replace (N) with the handle of the target disk
Scroll to Features Supported and look for EPC
[Enabled] should no longer be seen

Shut down the computer then reinstall the drive into the NAS if it was the case. If you type in Google disable epc site:seagate.com you will notice that many models show up because many models support the EPC and thus giving one more option to help you reduce noise from your machine.

If you want to filter the power to your system you will need what is known as an "Online" UPS. These take the mains AC power, convert it to DC current, charge the batteries, then convert the DC current coming out back in to AC current. They're always running through the battery, not just when the power is cut. This will filter out any noise or interference from the mains power. I'm by far not an expert in UPS, so I would recommend doing your own research in to it before buying.

Aren't there laws against doing electrical work if you're not licensed in the UK? Or is it just more of a "If your house burns downs then you're not covered by insurance" type deal?

If "dodgy electrician" is one who does not have x-ray vision to see the internal wiring in your walls from the street, then I guess they're all dodgy.

you best to get ups and move out than. there is other things you could do but i suspect that would cause further wedge. your issue isnt a technical one but a emotional one.

you know the solution is an electrician needs to look at the wiring. your father is putting everyones life at risk. i suspect you have seen other issues that leads you to believe poor electrical wiring.

You need to add drive letters to the drives without any. So right click on the partition for Disk 0 and click "Change Drive Letter and Paths" then pick a free drive letter. Then repeat for Disk 1 and Disk 3. Don't do this for Disk 2's second partition.

I would really like to see a review of some slimbook ultrabooks, especially of the Katana and Pro. The idea of these products is
to address the issue of hardware compatibility with Linux by choosing hardware that's working well in sync with Linux and optionally pre-install it.
I'm a CS student and would love to have a professional Linux laptop for programming and such.
So I think of buying one but I can not find a review online that is in my opinion thorough enough.

Like this, it's similar to the one you've selected they make common quick release circular connectors but just note the amount of power your pushing through it and the cabling you'll be using.

You get different sizes with differing numbers of pins. It gives you a very clean look to have a single connector with the wires/pipes coming out close to the components.

Metalshark reacted to deadaccount69 in Can you split a PWM signal without needing to boost it?
You are correct in assuming it's simply a control signal. The first 2 pins are power, the third is a tachometer(it pulses every time it makes one rotation) and the 4th is a control signal for a little transistor across the motor power. You should be able to simply splice it with no problems.

Making great content that gets a ton of views doesn't take a huge team. Trying to build a sustainable business operation that (if all goes according to plan) could be capable of running seamlessly without yourself someday does.

There is a ton of merit to both approaches. Neither is "correct".

And to be clear, this is not an announcement or even a HINT that I'm going anywhere anytime soon. It's just the kind of thing where if I were to get hit by a bus tomorrow I would want my family to inherit a strong, sustainable business, and I would want all of my staff to still have jobs.
