Hi There! I am from Australia and I am trying to get rid of the 11TB worth of external hard drives me and my family are using right now and have extra for the future, using this primarily for backups, photos, etc.
I recently upgraded my CPU and have an r5 1600 lying around so I wanted to build a NAS around this, my current parts I am looking at are as below, probs gonna buy as much as I can second hand to save money apart from the drives and was wondering if anyone had any advice on going around this or anything I should consider?
Looking at running RAID 5 with 3 drives to start with and adding more down the line (up to 8).
Mobo: Asus TUF GAMING B450M-PRO II mATX (2 x pcie 16x slots to possibly add a GPU down the line and a HBA card to expand the 4 sata ports on the mobo down the line and an extra m.2 slot to add a cache at some point)
RAM: Some sort of cheap 2x4 gb DDR4 ecc ram
Storage:
Western Digital Blue SN570 250gb - boot drive
3 x IronWolf 8TB
Case: Fractal Design Define R5
PSU: EVGA 700 GQ (8 individual sata connectors)
Also, if I were to setup truenas now, how hard would it be to change it down the line e.g. unraid?
