Why is every single AIB open air graphics card so ugly? They all look like plastic toys for 8 year old kids. Are there any open air graphics cards out there for us grown ups? The only graphics cards I really like the looks of is the blower style cards like the Asus turbo ones, MSI, EVGA etc, although not a fan of the plastic shrouds on them...  and the RX Vega with the brushed aluminum shroud is the most beautiful, clean, sleek and "grown up" of all graphics cards I've seen to date. I also love the design of previous gen nVidia reference cards, but I don't really like the angular look of the 10 series tbh. Problem is the only cards that look good is the blower style cards that are clean with no BS with their design, but I don't think they're very practical unless you do SLI or have a SFF case... I'm doing a build in the CaseLabs Mercury s5 and have found a nice motherboard to go with it, but no luck on the graphics cards. Companies seriously need to ditch the plastic shrouds and start making clean aluminum ones that fit cases like the Fractal Design or CaseLabs etc. Am I the only one who is annoyed by all the "gamery" angular RGB EVERYTHING looks on graphics cards today? Don't get me wrong they're fine, but I just wish we could see something different for once...

PCMasterGuy reacted to Oshino Shinobu in Getting an m.2 nvme x4 boot drive on an x2 port?
Nope, it makes basically no difference most of the time.

NVMe excels at sequential read/writes, which is things like transferring large files (either across multiple NVMe drives, across the same drive, or to multiple SSDs at once. If it's transferring to a single slower drive, it will be limited by the other drive) and loading large projects into RAM for things like video editing and 3D modelling.

Booting, OS use, most programs and games are all random read/write based. While NVMe is faster than a normal SATA SSD for random read/writes on paper, it doesn't translate to real world performance.

IMO, NVMe is best suited to being scratch drives for working on large files or for use in content providing machines (ie. servers) as they handle multiple high speed transfers well.

PCMasterGuy reacted to Dabombinable in Why is there no usb type-c on Asus z370g mobo???
Because Asus is Asus. And Asus has had their motherboards going downhill since the early 2000's

PCMasterGuy got a reaction from Damascus in Why is there no usb type-c on Asus z370g mobo???
Seriously, what the hell? Why did they have to remove the usb type-c port from Asus z370g gaming motherboard? It's on the mini ITX version. WTF? Also seems they removed many features since they made the gene line of motherboards in to strix, like the q-code readout, mem-ok, start and reset buttons, clr cmos bios flashback etc... Now this doesn't bother me personally, since I'm not getting this particular board, but still, why do they keep removing so many features on these smaller form factor boards, especially mATX? Seems to me this form factor is slowly dying, and wouldn't surprise me if there will be no offering from Asus when next gen comes out... Also can't find a single review for this board either.... smh...

Meh, I don't really care much for aesthetics, performance always comes first. But I can tell you the Gigabyte Aorus cards are butt ugly.

Tell me about it, I got the 1080 Ti Founders Edition because it looks much better and seems to be much better built, no plastic ugly parts etc... the card is such a beast that if I play my games 2560x1080p80hz the card hardly breaks a sweat so it stays very very quiet despite people loving to claims FE cooler is loud

In other words, Vega 64 is on par with the 1080 Ti using cherry picked benchmarks. I could do the same:

    Vega 64 is slower than a 1070

PCMasterGuy reacted to LogicalDrm in Noctua NH-D15S strain on motherboard?
There's reason why bigger coolers use backplates. If you've listened in physics classes during middle/high school, you understand why. Mobo is held by 6-9 screws (ATX). Those screws divide pressure evenly over whole mobo. Coolers use backplates. The way backplate works is that it moves strain that cooler causes from socket to all mobo. If all screws are tight, there won't be any single point where strain would cause trouble.

Mobos have weight limitation for cooler that don't use backplate.

I have always had a preference for Asus motherboards. Mostly because I prefer their aesthetic, and I have had a pleasant experience in every build I have used featuring an Asus board. I really like how their UEFI is laid out as well. I like Gigabyte too, but their new Aorus branding is too over the top for me. I have never cared for Asus' ROG line either for the same reason, but I feel like their newer Strix line tones it down just enough. I have never much cared for MSI's boards, but I don't hate them either. Same goes for Asrock. I would use EVGA boards, but Asus' look better to me.

It's still a great CPU, basically the same for gaming... Besides there is a global shortage for coffee lake chips so very few ppl will get them before January of next year anyway, basically a paper release... besides I wouldn't call covfefe lake "amazing at overclocking, gets nice and toasty and waaay hotter than 6th gen processors.

PCMasterGuy reacted to chilicheeseburger in why so many atx motherboards?
The thing with mITX on the other hand is... it really is form over function. While it's nice to have everything in that small form factor, there's some kind of novelty to it and it makes it easier to lug your PC around for LAN parties or whatever, you also generally have worse airflow and a worse building experience due to more difficult cable management. But if we look at what happened on the market in recent years, we've seen innovation on both case design and hardware (better efficiency, lower heat output).

I guess that's a good point, still I'd like to see more options as well for mITX which there isn't a lot of. But I guess it all comes down to sales...

Edit to actually contribute something to the discussion instead of shitposting:

While there are some nice mATX cases I feel it's just a bit of a weird in-between size... Like if were to build a new system from scratch, I'd go either standard ATX and have a mid-tower or go mini-ITX in a small form factor case.

Do you mean something like this? They've been around for a couple of years, the 'street vendors' you typically find in mediterranean countries are selling them in town squares etc.

is it safe to use 4 dimms in dual channel? by safe I mean I've heard that it can strain the memory controller on the cpu. What does that mean? will it reduce the life span of my cpu or other components? also is there a noticeable performance loss for normal application such as gaming, using programs ect vs quad channel, or is this just in benchmarks or for enthusiasts? I'm just an average user, so will I notice any difference in dual vs quad channel?
