    Agreed.

Both look great, and will hopefully help push forward the DSLR market with useful features in addition to better pure performance. I'm hoping for my brother's sake that this pushes down the prices of some other cameras, such as the D600 and even the 7200 - he's trying to upgrade.

I feel like a pure number system really prevents people from giving good, helpful rating. Overall an 7/10 for yours, but really its more like:

Color: 10/10 - The B&W suits the picture, with it's lines and the sun rays.
Composure: 8/10 - for what it is, it's good. You have the rays of sun, and the water. Slightly crooked maybe? See Contents, below, though.
Contents: 5/10 - I understand what you were going for, but, its a tad boring. I think either focusing more on that sign/rocks to give the picture a subject would be good. Or possibly wider angle or panorama.

I'm pretty sure I was asleep by midnight on new years eve. And then got up at 5AM to go for a ~5 mile hike up a hill in the snow and ice so we could get some pictures and exercise.

Thanks guys. I didn't really read about the update, but I did install it. I'll head to a different one in the morning.

That's sort of a bummer. I feel like they'd get much more business (not that they really need it) if they were more open like AT&T. I hate having my options limited by the carrier.

Yep, quite a number of mirrorless lenses do not come with those indicators.  I guess because:
makes the lens compact to keep the price low assume people rely on the camera to take care of things

Yeah, it is unfortunate. I looked up some of the sony lenses (what OP might be using, as he has an a7R2). And many do not have Infinity indicator or the distance indicator, It does look like Zeiss (actual Zeiss, not sony with zeiss) do, as do rokinon etc.

Actually it likely will. But depends on the lens, camera, etc. It's a good recommendation, because often its hard to focus on a light source like that. Infinity is a good starting point. I doubt @ALwin is talking about hard stop all the way to the end of the focusing range - in that case yeah, that's not going to work very often. But that is also not infinity.

When I AF to something very obviously infinity. My 50 f1.8 and 24-120 f4 is right on the infinity.

But he should test himself in daylight and mark the lens or something of that nature just to be sure. Getting out there and having the AF freak out or have the live view be hard to read/see is tough.

Edit, I just picked up my brother's D3000 with a 35mm 1.8. I realized the 1.8 does not have any infinity markings. So, @cadabri , if you do not have an infinity marking, you pretty much do need to autofocus something obviously infinity and mark your lens. If your lens focus ring keeps moving when in manual focus (aka, spons and spins and spins) you may also want to just tape the ring once focused on infinity. Take a chunk of pictures like that, then pull off the tape and try auto focus or live view and see if those work better.

Yes, I'm talking about using the Infinity symbol on the lens's focusing distance indicator.  I've done tons of astrophotography, with lenses and telescopes.  I've also edited them in Photoshop using layers.

Of course it has to be a lens with a focusing distance indicator.  Standard kit lenses and certain cheap lenses do not come with that ... which is too bad.  What a focusing distance indicator looks like.

d3sl91 got a reaction from ALwin in Best DSLR for $1300
What are you going to do with it? Video? Pics of the kids playing soccer? Take on vacation/travel? Learn the ins and outs of photography?

    One perspective:

Those included lenses are pretty much not worth the $230. There is a reason you can go and buy them any day used/almost new with zero hassle for about $150 total for both. The longer lens, for example, doesn't look like it has vibration reduction which can make it difficult to use in lower light, especially when zoomed in. If you don't plan on studying photography and mastering the camera then it wont matter as much to you, but then this is the wrong camera for you in that case anyway. In that case, a nice mirrorless, like the Sony A6000, will get you just as good of pictures in a much smaller body.

If you do plan on really learning to use a DSLR to its fullest potential:

I would get the body by itself, and then a decent midrange zoom. Like a Sigma 17-50mm F2.5 - it has Stabilization, and a faster aperature - giving you that nice blur (bokeh) and also much better low-light performance. It will be a good somewhat wide angle, and be able to zoom to a focal length that can be nice for portraits.

This is based on my own experience with an 18-55 I got with my D5200. As in, the 18-55 that is brand new, used twice, sitting in a box. I hated using it, and found a cheap $200 35mm 1.8 that I almost never took off. I wanted a good 18-55 equivalent and wished I had gone body-only and saved a few $$ to put towards the sigma 17-50.

    Food for thought:

Buying used or refurbished is not a bad option at all. Getting a 7100, a D600, a D5300 (or canon equivalent) can save youy loads of money. If refurbished, most have a 90 day warranty. As we know, with electronics, it'll die in the first few days if it's gonna have problems.

Unless you need a specific feature of the 7200 or other similar $1k camera, a Significantly cheaper D5500 will get you the same quality of pictures and leave more money for more/better lenses.

I don't think its better.. it IS better, clearly you know nothing about video if you cannot shoot better video on a DSLR vs a phone

You realise I make videos right? including running a YouTube channel etc, and have also help make music videos for local bands and stuff....the video on my iPhone 6 is nowhere near my Sony A7...I really only use it for its slow motion capabilities but they are not sharp at all,

Heck I have about 6 TB of Go Pro, iPhone, APSC and Full frame DSLR footage (most DSLR footage is recorded on a Ninja Blade 2 so that I can record in pro res HQ for colour grading)

Is smartphone video good? sure.. its ok, but a DSLR will always outperform it, especially since iphone video is absolutely horrible in low light with its tiny sensor

Maybe you should learn some more about video

Yes, you bought a retail key if you bought it directly from Microsoft. Retail keys can be easily re-activated on a new motherboard if necessary.

OEM keys are tied to a single motherboard. You cannot "easily" transfer. However, in practice, it just usually just takes a phonecall to activate again. You need to talk to a MS support person and they will activate for you after you explain its installed on a single PC.
