Shreyas1 reacted to dilpickle in All Flights in US Grounded For a Few Hours After FAA Computer systems Glitch
Their redundancy was a phone hotline which is how the system started back in the 40s. But it was quickly overloaded and they had to shut it down.

Unfortunately it usually takes incidents like this for someone to realize that the system needs to be updated.

    Summary
The new crash detection feature on iPhone 14 had an issue where it called 911 for a rollercoaster ride. This has apparently happened 6 times so far from the same park.

Obviously the feature had good intentions, and when working right I'm sure it will save plenty of lives. But there needs to be some sort of oversight whenever a new feature like this gets announced that automatically dials emergency services. Especially considering how common iPhones are, if this issue was even just a bit more widespread it could have created huge issues throughout the country.

Google pixel also has a crash detection feature, but it seems to be turned off by default, which is probably why we haven't seen many pixel phones do this.

Also GPUs from past generations are still extremely powerful still. My 3070 already crushes 4K gaming, and from the distance I sit from my monitor I don't even need to play in 4K.

AI generated art right now seems to have a lot of parallels to early photography, at least to me. At first you have people who dislike it because it seemingly takes away "skill" from art, but will probably evolve into an art form on its own.

I don't use social media at all (not including this forum and watching some YouTube I guess) but I honestly doubt social media is going to be that big of a deal long term. At least not more so than any other technology that connects people.

Many of the issues we see with social media IMO have historical parallels, and I think we turned out fine in the long run.  The printing press, for example, also lead to greater proliferation of propaganda and misinformation throughout society. I mean if you've taken a history class I'm sure you've seen political cartoons, leaflets, etc. all throughout history. If propaganda and conspiracy theories can't be spread through social media, then it would just be spread through newspapers, word of mouth, leaflets, etc.

Radicalization is also nothing new, I mean just look at everything that happened in the 20th century.

As for data collection by governments and corporations, those two entities have always been quite powerful throughout history.

I've always had my main, beefy PC in other rooms, with my secondary ones generally speaking being more tame. Except in the case of my living room PC, which I use mainly as a Plex server, with it having a Ryzen 3700x and a AiO 2080 Super. That one is pretty OP considering I barely ever play games on it, it being a case where I was using them on my main PC until I upgraded it, and I want to hold onto those components in case I need them instead of trying to sell them.

Well yes, that is easy to spot and fix in hindsight, I wonder what other applications may accidentally set this off, if they didn't consider this false positive, what else could they have missed? I'm just worried about automatic systems that can call 911 without any oversight, as there's bound to be more issues like this in the future.

the worst is the part about the "crying wolf" scenario. Where before, calling randomly will be maybe more of a cause to be looked into. While now its more of, "it's just likely an accidental phone call so lets hang it up". (not sure about the amount of troll or misused calls) But I do wonder how much AI can help with some of the weird calls.
