  1. I am after a Corsair 1000W or 1200W PSU but they are out of stock in every online shop? - Any idea why that is?
  2. Either way Zyndo, all this extra info is good. To wrap up this post, for anyone still reading who is in a similar situation and is interested in what I opted for; as someone new to hardware it seems to me the case is this: - The cheapest 44 lane Intel i9 CPU is double the price of the 6850K and you don't even get double the cores. - On the AMD side, Threadripper is promising up to 16 Cores, with the 16 Core one rumored on social media at roughly £600. I don't see how they have an 8 core one out for less than £400 but they will do extra 10 Cores for £200. This is heavy speculation on my end but I think they will release 16 Core one which will be £1000+ and then 14,12 and 10 Core models, one of the 10 or 12 will be around £800 and so you will be paying £400 extra than the 6850K for either 4 or 6 more Cores, it seems more coherent with their sales strategy which seems to be which is based around charging less than Intel. - Currently there's the 8 Core AMD that is cheaper than the 6 Core 6850K but it comes down to preference, I don't know of anyone in my industry working on an AMD so Intel is the winner for me here.
  3. right this helps - gotchya! I've just looked at the X299 ones and the cheapest one which supports 44 lanes is £800 pounds - double the price of the 6850K I suppose on my end I need to do more research into which out of AMD and Intel is more optimal for the software I use.
  4. I am looking to save where I can so it does sound appealing. For someone running no more than 3 programs at a time and does no CPU rendering , won't 6 cores be enough? Also, how are they selling 16 core for similar price to Intel's 6 core?? surely too good to be true
  5. Brilliant - will do! Thanks for the contribution
  6. Bearing in mind I never run more then 3 programs at a time and don't do any CPU rendering, you reckon I'd still need this? thanks for the post
  7. It's good to hear about all this new stuff coming out - but I haven't seen any prices set in stone nor any release dates I am will genuinely consider AMD if I can find a link that adds some authority to the claim that it smashes Intel for CAD, video editing etc + Isn't new stuff always going to be coming out? What do you think?
  8. I'm a bit lost here, so what is the name/model of the CPU I should look out for which will have these prospective 4 CPU's in one?
  9. Again thanks, can you link me to any sources for this so I can read up on it?
  10. thanks for this I've had others mention - could you post a link to where I can read up on this for myself? In regard to the higher wattage causing the components to not work to their best - I saw this in Linus' video here at 1:25 -
  11. Say something goes wrong with Windows and I need to contact support, would I still be able to do that with Kinguin? I originally set the frequency to 2400 as this is the max the CPU can support, or maybe this is just a guideline? - source here: http://ark.intel.com/products/94188/Intel-Core-i7-6850K-Processor-15M-Cache-up-to-3_80-GHz thanks for your reply
  12. Hey man, this is brilliant! - thanks for taking the time to help here! I don't know much about AMD I am just aware that the platform has it's quirks (but like any for that matter) so just went for something I had used before Only prob here is that I have 16GB at the office and it is a struggle - 64 is what I need preferably even 128 (somewhere down the line) which this motherboard doesn't support but I can always find some other options for these. BUT, once again, big thank you for this - AMD might be a noteworthy path, I will do more research.
  13. Hi there, I'm totally new to hardware. I’m currently building my first PC which I will be using for work in 3D animation/dynamics/GPU rendering/large scale photo editing/VFX. This will be a work machine only - no gaming. Here is the software i use: Cinema 4D - Octane renderer - Redshift renderer Side FX Houdini After Effects Premiere Photoshop I am aware that flaunting very expensive PC Part Picker lists for the sake of it is a thing on these forums but this is not the case here. This build is built with future expansion in mind, I want to be adding to it if I need something in the future rather than buying from scratch. The components have been picked by looking at various sources from the net and even though I think I have filtered well through the hype-word marketing shit-storm of the hardware world, still, at times I’ve gone for a faster of model of this or faster model of that and even gone for a familiar brand name just to be on the safe side, purely because I don’t know these things and want to be getting value for money. Could you please point out anything wrong that you see - conflicting components, potential bottlenecks, any parts where I can save money, and any other suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated! If anyone has built their PC with some of these parts and can advise on potential pitfalls during the build; 'you need this cable or this extra part' etc this will also be helpful as I will be building it on my own and have never done so before. Here is the list: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/VCK3Gf Here are is my justification for the parts which might help: Corsair 900D Large case for expansion in the future and also helps with prevention of overheating. ASUS X99-E WS USB 3.1 Has 40PCI lanes with x16 on each. Looks great for future expansion. Intel i7-6850K 6 core is enough as all renderers are moving to GPU rendering and in general, in animation, single core performance is valued over how many cores + Allows up to 40pci lanes also allows 128GB RAM for future expansion. I know AMD are bringing new ones out but I’m not interested in them. ASUS STRIX 1080 Ti (x2) Just like the FE but has fans which will keep it cool so no additional GPU cooling needed in this case. Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB DDR4 RAM 2400Mhz Trusted brand. Not the fastest out there but CPU can’t support more than 2400. Kraken X62 AIO Seems to have the best reviews and said to be quiet. 1TB M.2 SSD Some of the software I use caches to memory and by default it will go to the SSD, hence the 1TB. I know I can manually tell it to cache to the HDD but there times when you don't want it to do this. WD Red 2TB HDD (x2, one for back-up) Have a WD already and I’m happy with it, also RED are meant to be very quiet + Back up drive is important, as these will be work related files. Optical Drive They all look the same, any specific recommendations or things to look for? Wireless Card The motherboard doesn’t have WI-FI. All cards seem to be the same but any recommendations? Windows 10 Home? Pro? Which one do I need? Corsair 1200W PSU 1200 Overkill? I got this calculation from here: https://outervision.com/b/XRZ1fm I’ve heard going overboard with the Voltage will cause your components to not work to their full potential- will this be an issue here? This forum is the last stop before purchasing and I’m looking to leave no stone unturned, so feel free to pick apart the list as much as possible - again many thanks in advance!
  14. hmm ok - I always went for Intel just because it was a familiar brand as oppose to AMD which I had never heard of before, but now that you mention this it might be worth doing some research. Thanks for the info!
