As a new owner of the Titan Black (and yes, I wanted it for the compute power, and gaming on the side ... I actually don't have any games other than D3 to play right now), I can say that the reference cooler is awesome.

I ran Unigine Valley 1.0 on Extreme HD, with just factory settings, and I had 1202 MHz Core Clocks, it hit 82 C, and it didn't throttle down. The fan just ramped up and kept it locked at 82-83 C. I left it running on a loop for a little while (like 20-30 minutes).

Wasn't even that loud. But hard to really compare since I came from a 2-year old laptop.

I've also got the ACX cooler, but I don't think I'll have time to install it for another couple of weeks. Will overclock then. Did average about 67-68 fps with factory settings. Not sure if NCIX install team OC-ed my GPU. Didn't really pay attention. eVGA PrecisionX says everything is stock.

If you just need a GPU for gaming, get a 780ti.

Get a Be Quiet! Dark Rock 2 instead as it's pretty much all black already.

For dampening material, use anything. Some thick foam, Styrofoam, even thick double sided taped. Just something to help absorb the vibration. And no, don't need to drill. You just need to be positive it is very secure. Those motors spin very fast and vibrate, so you need to make sure they are, and stay, secure. A bunch of zip straps and tape should do ok.

They stay in for sure. Once they're in, they're not coming out.

I found that once inserted, they weren't bad, but getting them in and out was a bit of a chore.

It's easy to accidentally put them in far enough to hurt, but if you're careful it's fine.

I've got the Boom Pro Mic.

Better than my built-in on my laptop. Better than a desktop microphone from RadioShack. Better than my Microsoft webcam's microphone.

Only gripe I have, I guess, is the splitter for microphone & headphone jacks (3.5mm). It's a short lead on it. About 6 inches when stretched out (from headphone to microphone). So if you are using a USB amp/DAC (in my case, a Fiio E07k Andes), it has to sit really close the microphone jack for it to reach. Though, I have tested it on my cell phone (Google Galaxy Nexus) without the splitter (it's just a Y-adapter that's included), and it works like a charm. Great for when you have to call those 1-800 numbers and they leave you on hold for a long time. Like my ISP.

    AznKnight82 got a reaction from rakloiders in Factory OC-ed 290X or Reference 290X - both water-cooled
Before I state my question, I'm going to say this:

I plan to drop some big money on a new system anyways. I can buy a system that guarantees me no money (a gaming system with NVidia) or I can buy the same-priced system but use it to mine in the 80-100% of my typical day when I don't play games, with no guarantee of no money but still be good at gaming. I've got a laptop now. Planned on mining dogecoin. I'm voting on the latter.

Ok. So I was looking to getting two R9 290X's and water-cooling them. I rent an apartment that is managed by a big company (they own a couple dozen buildings in my area) and the electricity is included in the rent. Also, the apartment is already pretty warm for my tastes and not the largest, so efficient silent cooling is a must. So mining, other than getting the rig, doesn't really cost me any money. To me, it's zero risk/cost investment and if it completely collapses, I still have what I originally wanted: a decent gaming machine.

My question is this: Should I spend the extra $50-100 per card to get a factory OC-ed version of the card? I typically understand that they might have better chips and components in them, translating to a better life-cycle.

If I was ever concerned about an ROI is if mining completely burns out any of the cards.

Maybe I need to re-word my question:

When water-cooling the 290x, should I be concerned about burning them out (or them dying before their time) when mining almost 24/7 with them?
