  1. Funny
pomkon got a reaction from Mark Kaine in What brand is this
what info can you get from sku code?
    Solved it's forsa , I can see f o but not r s a. Then i asked you guys.

  2. Informative
pomkon reacted to LukeSavenije in [EOL] PSU Tier List rev. 14.8
PSU Tier List 4.0 rev. 14.8 (END OF LIFE)
    Last Update: 27-07-2021

    Legend :
Gray - EoL/obsolete and/or otherwise not recommended for purchase.
Green - small form-factor (gold and blue colors are disregarded due to scarcity of SFX PSUs)
Gold - best units in the tier (includes requirements for blue color in tier A)
Blue - quiet operation under moderate load (see details in the spreadsheet)
Hyphen / Dash - Series / lineups separator
Slash - Models (inside one series) separator
Parenthesis / Round brackets - Model variations (which belong to the same position)
Square brackets - Additional description (wattage range, part of SKU code, label / casing color, release year)
Numbers in red colored square brackets - footnotes, see descritptions at the end of respective tiers
Low priority subtiers - Lack of info (no reviews) or minor issues (see the corresponding tab in the spreadsheet). Not recommended for purchase over any normal priority units.
Multi-rail units - Not necessarily better than single-rail units but provide an extra layer of protection by having 12V OCP set lower than total capacity, which is especially relevant for very high capacity units (=>1kW). Pay attention to rails configuration when using with high power draw components to avoid shutdowns.

See spreadsheet for changelog, methodology, detailed description of colors, review sources, notes on grayed-out units including issues like GPU incompatibility or quality and performance issues, and other additional info.

[1] Units experiencing tripping issues with high transient power draw GPUs like AMD Vega, 6900 XT and nVidia RTX3080 / 3080 Ti / 3090.
[2] Corsair SF units with LOT codes from 194448* through 201148* have potential problems, Corsair conducts a voluntary replacement, source.
[3] Units that don't reach full rated capacity under full rated input voltage range.
[4] Antec EA Pro Gold has versions for Chinese market made by FSP on competely different, worse, group-regulated platform (tier D). Source #1, #2.
[5] Corsair HX1200 and HX1200i units with LOT codes in range between 2030* and 2041* may exhibit motherboard compatibility issues, entitled for advanced RMA, source.
[6] Early EVGA G3 revisions had issues with out-of-spec performance under overload.
[7] Older Seasonic Focus revisions (made before 2018) had transient sensitivity issues. Some new SKUs are not affected because they were released later (Seasonic Focus GM/GX/PX refreshes, Phanteks AMP, NZXT C/E etc.).
[8] Seasonic PRIME based units experience shutdowns with RTX3080/3090 (and possibly RX6900 XT) GPUs, especially ones with unlocked power limit like FE and ASUS Strix. It is recommended, if going with such units, to overprovision wattage, 1kW for RTX3080 and 1.2kW for RTX3090, or power-limit the GPU, or performing a 'dirty' fix of disconnecting a pin of 12V V-sense wire from PSU-side connector of 24-pin motherboard cable (courtesy of Jonny Guru). Units based on post-2018 revisions of Seasonic Focus platform and majority of units by other OEMs are not affected.

[1] MWE V2 units have high ripple issues on very low load also resulting in increased coil whine, fix pending.
[2] High wattage CWT GPX based units have problems with failing burn-in test under sub 90VAC input, treat as 230V only, (Jonny Guru).
[3] Units experiencing tripping issues with high transient power draw GPUs like AMD Vega and high-end nVidia Ampere.
[4] Two versions of Segotep GP-G exist, older v1 version is non-LLC resonant and they're very hard to extinguish externally, hence model tiering based on v1.

Hey now, lets be fair, the NZXT controller can do SO much for than that! for $50ish you get
Something to fill that empty 2.5" slot in your PC case Fool your non techy friends into thinking you're a total baller and got a bigger capacity SSD because it's physically bigger AND RGB ("Wow he's got a 4tb SSD! But he wont let me look at the back side or under the PSU basement"...) Dont want to put it in your case? Boom! RGB Paper weight! Speaking of weight, it weighs a little over half a pound. If you can throw it at about 40mph, it'll has enough force to hurt about as much as bean bag rounds in a riot bean bag round. A perfect non lethal self defense weapon! (I spent way too much time just now calculating that...) And it knows tricks too! Like Stay, pretend to control my fans in a useful way, dont care about me in a loving way like an inanimate object, and my personal favorite, "Burn a hole in my wallet when I have to pay for you"!*** ("Who's a good RGB controller?? YOU ARE! YES YOU ARE!") Bring it to meet the Family! Dad will love it's square boxy design and Mom will love how useful it is around the house! Maintenance free! It wont care if your fans provide 0 airflow because the case you bough was designed like a sealed cardboard box, it will just keep on changing those LED's!  It comes in any color you want, as long as it's black. In all seriousness, if you're looking for a RGB controller, check out @Beer_Nontitju's guide on RGB Ecosystems

Check out the Sonoff series by iTead Studios.  They offer a range of home control products starting at as little as 6 bucks.  Six bucks gets you a WiFi-controlled relay module that you can splice in-line with a lamp cord (or an extension cord) and then control from anywhere in the world that has internet access using your smart phone.  No hub is required, only a WiFi network.

Most of their products are relay-controlled, so on/off only with no dimming; maybe lack of dimming is a good tradeoff if you can control your whole house for a hundred bucks.

Some of the modules support temperature and humidity monitoring and those parameters used to control other modules.  Some of the modules can monitor power usage.

Low voltage DC modules are handy for some applications (like the string of USB Christmas lights I'm using as a night light) and modules are available to provide momentary contact closure to operate garage door openers and electronic gates.

The system works directly with Google Home and I believe Alexa as well without any hardware beyond the modules being required.

From what I have seen, Google Home and Alexa work with many suppliers of home automation equipment, and can serve to integrate various incompatible systems together.  Google Home knows how to "turn on the living room lamp" and how to "turn all lights off" no matter what home control system a given lamp is using.

The Sonoff product line is constantly expanding.  Firmware updates for the modules occur regularly, and the eweLink smart phone app for Andriod and IOS is updated frequently.

I'm just a satisfied customer, looking to correct some misinformation.

pomkon reacted to seagate_surfer in Nas = desktop drives?
A lot of the reasons for people buying NAS drives are listed in your post, extra warranty, error correction controls, firmware specifications, data rescue service subscriptions, etc.

One big thing which hasn't been brought up much in this discussion yet is vibration concerns. When mechanical hard drives spin, they generate what is called RV (Rotational Vibration). Now think about a NAS box which has x number of hard drives in it, this means a lot more vibration to take into consideration. The firmware on desktop drives doesn't have a whole lot of support for detecting and adjusting for these vibrations, because that's not the use the drives were engineered for. This can cause the drive to both slow down when the vibrations jolt and move around the heads and other tiny mechanical components, and also cause the drives to wear out quicker. NAS drives have firmware that protects against those things happening. Our IronWolf line of NAS drives carries firmware for this called AgileArray. There are also physical RV sensors built into the IronWolf capacity 4TB and larger, as well as in all models of the IronWolf Pro to take it a step further.

It may not seem like a big deal when firmware in drives as different, but it can be like fine-tuning a car to hit a racetrack versus to go up a mountain, the components can be quite similar as to what actually makes up the car, but you still wouldn't use them for the same thing. Or a mountain bike versus a road bike. They're the same but yet they're not.

Here is a video on choosing the right drive for the right job for anyone interested.

Lastly, it depends as well on if you're using a dedicated NAS enclosure like Synology, QNAP, ASUSTOR, etc. Because these vendors will typically only support drives on their compatibility lists, meaning if you need support for their enclosures then having non-supported drives in them could cause you some unwanted headaches/complications.

    MATERIALS
    - You can buy led strips with addressable leds that are only 4 mm (0.16 inches) wide.
    - Buy an appropriate led strip controller from ebay or make your own with an cheap Chinese arduino copy as i did with my diy rgbw power supply shroud.

    BUILD
    - You can use an acrylic sheet of the same thickness (or thicker) as the width of the led strip, that is 4 mm (or more).
    - Cut the acrylic to desired shape.
    - Sand the surface of the acrylic so that it is matte (for diffusing the light).
    - Attach the led strips to the end of the acrylic sheets so that they shine into the acrylic sheets from the edges.
    - Cover the led strips with something so that they are not seen and so that the edges of the acrylic sheets look nicer.

    PICTURES
Pictures of my diy led controller (i will maybe sometime post a detailed how-to when the design is nicer) and pictures of my diy rgbw power supply shroud.

Like everyone said, the main two types of fans used in computers are
fans optimized for airflow (which move a lot of air, the ones you put on case above the backplate with connectors, or in front of the hard drives) and
fans optimized for static pressure (which may not move a lot of air but can push that amount of air better through tight places that restrict airflow otherwise, like between fins of heatsinks). These are better suited for cpu coolers, for moving air through radiators used on water cooling.

Then you get variations in the blade designs which result in compromises between amount of air moved, air pressure and noise.
Some striations and "wings" and bumps "golf ball prints" on the blades can influence the air currents around the fan and reduce the noise the fan makes, or at least decrease the noise at some frequencies which are more bothersome to human ears.  They're "shaping" the noise the fans make.

Some blade designs can be very noisy and average in performance at high rpm, but may push more air at low rpm compared to other fan designs, so such fans may be used where for long periods of time the product may not run at 100% (for example in power supplies) , and being more silent at lower rpm is beneficial.

The shape of the blade is determined by the manufacturer based on use case and what they determine to be the most efficient. Often thicker, lower  blades are used for static pressure and thinner and higher count blades are used for airflow. Beyond that, it's up to the manufacturer.

pomkon reacted to mariushm in What tier is this?
I wouldn't be able to tell the manufacturer but even if i would, not sure it would matter as i suspect the label is lying about what the power supply can do.

It's very rare that a power supply will provide more than 3A on 5vSB (5v stand-by), a circuit which is always on inside the power supply, and  gives the computer a bit of power even when it's turned off. Anything above 3A makes this circuit more expensive and typically you only see that in 850-1000w or bigger power supplies.
Then, the label says the power supply has two 12v rails, each capable of giving up to 19A to the components.
If this is even true, then the psu can give 2 x 19A x 12v = 456w of power to components on 12v. But, I suspect while each individual rail has a top limit of 19A, the power supply isn't "designed" to output the peak on both rails at same time, let's say a total of 32-35A (or around 380-400w) would be a reasonable number on labels of brand name power supplies.
The other things aren't uncommon... the label says there's a power budget of 120w which can be used to produce 3.3v and 5v, and you can think of it like two mini power supplies that can each produce up to some amount of current, but together they can only use as much power as the budget allows.
So you can have 3.3v at up to 21A (~70w) and 5v up to 17A (85w) but there's a top cap at 120w.
These are reasonable values like i said, and even if the label lies I would still expect the power supply to be capable of at least 15A on 3.3v or 5v - and that's still more than what modern computers use.

So overall, from the label i would say it looks more like a 420-450w power supply, not a 600w one... but without seeing the insides i couldn't really say. Could be really crap inside
The lack of UL numbers, typos on label, smells-like-fake-speaks are not promising.

pomkon reacted to AshleyAshes in Do You really Need ECC RAM for a home NAS???
Again, redundancy.  The entire ZFS file system is purpose built to avoid such concerns.  The ZFS file system is built like a brick shit house but you clearly have no idea how it works.  Unless the data is in memory and being written to the file system, it will just sit there.  Even a corrupted OS doesn't jump up and start eating the file system like some kind of random Skynet creation.  Only data in the process of being written, either in memory or needing to be read from a cache drive and copied to the file ZFS filesystem would be at risk.  And these are the rare situations where ECC can be a benefit.  A random cosmic ray flipping a bit in your memory will not cause you to lose all data.  Protection against this is literally why ZFS exists.

And it makes sense in an enterprise situation.  There's a LOT of data moving in and out of memory to meet the demands of whatever service and you need to maximize uptime.  Meanwhile most end users who have a NAS are just hoarding files, usually media, files that will sit on the storage and rarely be read and when they are read they will be read for a pretty brief time (Relatively speaking).  Hard drive failures, now those are cause for a doom scenario.  Or a PSU failure that just up and burns out everything attached to it.  Power surge in your electrical grid.  Your idiot roommate flooding the place.  These are the things you should fear.  Insisting on ECC memory for a home user to avoid the 'monster' of 'total data loss', that's just ignorant nerds trying to out fearmonger each other.
