Not sure where we got the racking but the rest of the shelving was from U-line.

You don't want the extremes. You don't want too budget, and nor high-end and above.
Budget will cost you more in the long run as you'll change your PC too often.
High-end is useless as you'll have newer technologies/features that might interest you and you'll miss out.

Get a PC that meet your needs at 3-4 years. My recommendation is to get something that fits your needs now and some headroom. But nothing crazy.
Also, consider what you'll get in the future. For example, you may have a 1080p screen now, but you plan later to get a 1440p or even 4K UHD screen next year... well you want to build a computer with that mind.

personally, I say wait until Kaby lake desktop CPUs are released, and compare with AMD offerings and start from there. i would say 'wait for Nvidia next gen Volta", but with AMD not pushing things with their latest Vega GPU, sadly,  it might not come soon.

I've been selling/building computers for years in a professional setting.

You build a little up from what you need. Get a good base that will last for a few years and that a updated video card will refresh the computer and bring it back to life. Most people buy small and end up going bigger down the road which in the long run is more money.

I see an issue with that:  wide variety of sound equipment by the listeners.  The song would sound different across different sound equipment.

The music is probably cut into clear foil then.
That's what is used on cheap picture discs.
If that is indeed the case it'll sound more like a flexi disc than a vinyl record.

This the main reason why I've always avoided picture discs.
Although, as you said, this is more of an an aesthetical product rather than an actual audio product.
It could be a great novelty gift, I guess.

Yep, that is undoubtedly a Shenzhen Skywin design, and not even a good one at that.
There will more than likely be an impedance mismatch between the ceramic cartridge and whatever circuitry they're using for the ADC.
This will in turn lead to a really harsh sound output. This could very well be coupled with the ADC outputting a digital stream with a very low sample rate.

Using the Sony turntable will more than likely yield a better result.

Don't forget Anders Nicholson. They're probably the worst all-in-one systems out there (which says a lot).

slavikcc reacted to Volbet in Best settings in Audacity for converting tapes & vinyl to a lossless format
This is a really difficult question to answer. The problem is more than likely not Audacity.
It's more than likely that the problem lies your units ADC.

From the way you phrase it, it sounds like you're using an all-in-one unit, which means that it might just not be worth using to to do proper digitizing of your media.
I guess you could try using the ADC in your computer via the line-in, but again, it might not be worth the hassle.

Looks like only the rich who has lots of $$$ laying around gets to mine, because the average person won't be able to afford 7 high-end cards at 1 time, let alone rent a entire 747.  Basically the rich gets richer... And renting a 747 cost around $27,000/hour.

According to the internal email, leaked by somebody at RedFlagDeals forums, all NCIX retail stores are closing up show, leaving the Markham warehouse and showroom left in Ontario:

Greg at NCIX publicly posted news of the three Ontario shops closing up in the NCIX message boards:

From the RedFlagDeals news source: http://www.redflagdeals.com/latest-news/17/07/19/ncix-closes-three-stores-in-ontario/

This is quite sad news as I received decent customer service from NCIX from the Ottawa store back in April 2017 when I had my Arctic Cooling AIO leaked, which destroyed my motherboard and CPU.  It goes to show that that sticking with retail shops for computer parts is increasingly nonviable, dealing with razor-thin profit margins. And yet tech retail stores like Best Buy manages to adapt and survive the ever changing retail landscape from away from their physical store model to online.  I'm sure a lot of us Canucks and Linus will lament the loss of the NCIX stores closing up in Ontario.  Six years ago, Linus was even at the grand opening at the First Markham Place (which has long since moved to the Markham showroom location), seen in this video below:

I don't know what happened to NCIX. I recall they had great service, decently fast shipping, and great prices.... A few years after Linus left... I guess other left as well, because prices were less compelling, and shipping processing and time took more time, like it can take 1-2 or even 3 days after the before they actually start the shipping process (I recall reading some people waiting more, and where the part was back-ordered).

But NCIX mistake is the retail store. It is smart to turn a segment of a warehouse as a retail store. But opening individual retail stores is not. Stores are costly to operate. Rent is expensive (they are no regulations in most provinces on commercial space.. so if a landlord wants to pass 1 year charging 8,000$ per month, to 15,000$ the following year, then too bad. They either pay or move), electricity is a lot more expensive for commercial space than residential, plus you need to pay for additional employees, training them, operation cost, and so on, all while being price competitive against Newegg and others, which doesn't have retail stores. Margins on computer hardware are limited.

Wow!  I guess this thread made into a spirited discussion regarding the viability of brick and mortar shops and big box stores and the state of NCIX overall.  Even Amazon Canada is effectively gained significant traction in the computer retail market, though I can't say about Tiger Direct nor Canada Computers on how well they're doing.  This means that retail is hugely cutthroat than ever before, no thanks to disruptive technologies and companies struggling to adapt to the ever changing landscape.

There's been a lot of rumours and anecdotes about even the state of NCIX themselves in BC, going by the posts on the Vancouver Reddit page.

I have to wonder what @LinusTech and @Slick (didn't Luke used to work for them before?) have to say about all of this.

Edzel used to lurk and post on the NCIX.com forums way back, so he knows his stuff pretty well.  Brandon is pretty decent with building a PC, which helped a lot since he shot videos of Linus' build guides despite Brandon's not having as much hands-on experience as the others.  Coming from myself who build and repair thousands of PC's in my lifetime, I think they're pretty good.

And well, Jon does a lot of benchmarking so he's pretty well-seasoned and is quite trustworthy.

Luke and obviously Linus (when he doesn't drop things that is...).

Keep asking probing questions.  Ask if she tried it on other USB ports.

If she kept saying, "I don't know", then ask for it back ASAP.  Otherwise, you might as well write it off and don't lend your stuff to her again.
