  1. This conversation got carried away lol... Regardless, I think a used workstation product line provides more value to me than a cheaper, consumer one for my work. So i think i'm going to go this route. Continue reading for my end of the rant. Regardless of the fact that Apple did not make these CPUs, they just requested them from intel because their machines can't handle the higher clocked versions and cannot be bought new from anywhere else besides from an Apple Product, this comparison doesn't make sense. These CPUs are still pretty recent workstation CPUs which are always a worse value for the money in terms of performance, but that's not why you buy workstation parts. The systems that contain the Xeons have support for stuff like ECC memory and a few other features, and the motherboards (usually, notable exception being Apple's machines) are much higher quality and much more reliable than consumer ones. So yea, this isn't as good of a value as a brand new Ryzen 5 3600 even while being a used part, but again, that's not why I'm considering this. You could argue that the additional features the Xeons have could easily be transferred over to the formerly consumer platform, or that most apple users don't need the improved reliability for the Facebook browsing they do, but all of this doesn't matter anymore because we are talking about PCs running Linux doing real work, not a fancy overpriced Facebook browsing machine.
  2. I can't find where it says they only work in apple products, it just says they only come with apple products. I have contacted the sellers of these chips and they claim they will work in the workstation I plan to use.

I guess it's true that a Ryzen 3600 would have similar performance for 60 dollars less, but the issue with getting that is I plan to run linux with windows running in a KVM, and my previous consumer motherboards always had something that didn't work correctly in linux with virtualization or basic functionality, like audio or usb not working with no support from the manufacturer, and I want something that is guaranteed to work with linux, like the Dell t5820. I could get that asus AM4 workstation board, or upgrade to EPIC, but I definitely cant afford either of those options especially since I can't find any AM4 motherboards in stock at all. This approach also lets me get officialy supported ecc memory and lots of PCI express slots/lanes for adding GPUs or fast storage to use with more VMs.

It seems to be an Apple specific part found in the iMac pro, and I'm considering getting one of these with a bare bones Dell T5820. However I couldn't find much info online from people who have tried this, but If it's real its a great value, should I go for it? The sellers say its compatible with the T5820.
  5. The price is pretty low, a third of retail chips, but if I get the chip and I have an issue that isn't consistent, it may make it harder to return so I'm not going to go for it. Right now I'm looking at some Xeon W-2140Bs, and I'll probably make another post about those.
  6. Its an Intel Xeon E5-2667 V3 ES QEYY chip going into a Dell T5810, its listed as 2.9 GHz in the listing, but CPUz says its 3.2 GHz. I sent a request for benchmarks, but ultimately with everyone saying not to get an ES i'm thinking i'm going to keep looking.

The issue is custom PC components are very expensive in North America right now due to high demand (because its summer and everyone is stuck in side with nothing to do due to covid), and shipping issues in Asia due to PPE being prioritized over PC components. If you can' I recommend waiting a few months for supply and demand to stabilize and maybe get the new ryzen 4000.
  8. Well if speedtest is saying your ping is 11, that's the ping between wherever that speedtest server is and you. Speedtest servers are usualy pretty near by, sometimes even hosted by your ISP, and therefor should have a good connection to you. If there is consistently high latency between your PC and your access point/router/internet service provider, speedtest would be able to tell you that, and because 11 ms ping is pretty good, that means all of your equipment is at least capable of a low latency connection. Most likely, the high ping in game is cause by a bad connection between your ISP and whatever game server you are connecting to, maybe due to them being located very far away or just having poor internet connections in the frist place. In that case, there's not a lot you can do, however its also possible that speedtest just happens to be getting good readings when you run the test, but your latency is inconsistent due to a bad wifi connection. In that case, Ethernet can help and give you a more consistent ping. At least try without a wifi extender and connect to your main wifi network because wifi extenders suck in general.
  9. Hello, I am piecing together a reasonably decent workstation PC from used parts off ebay for my software development in linux and 3d modeling, but I found something that seems interesting. I'm not going to list any specific details for risk of someone buying it first, but there's a Xeon model listed as an "Late engineering sample" in the description and "Intel Confidential" markings on the IHS with CPU-Z screenshots showing a completely normal Xeon part (says nothing about qualifying samples or anything like that, just shows up like a proper retail one would). It's priced much lower than normal Xeons of that part number presumably because it's an engineering sample, so it's pretty tempting, but I'm planning to use it with a Dell T series workstation and I want to know if there would be any risk or issues with using an engineering sample CPU in my configuration.   10. Already did, nothing relevant. As far as the OS is aware, the shutdowns aren't happening. It's acting like it a sudden loss of power, but I have already verified the stability of the system in windows and swapped the power supply. The only thing I haven't excluded would be my CPU, RAM and mobo at this point, but I don't have any others on hand to test and if one of those are the issue than it probably wouldn't be an issue with the parts themselves, rather a compatibility issue with them and the motherboard. So if that's the real issue, a motherboard swap would have been nessisiary anyways, so I may as well move on unless theres a magical CPU or memory kit that hates linux somehow.
  11. Yep, tried all that and way more. Spent over a week troubleshooting this off and on. I continued this on Level1Tech's forums and me and some very helpful people concluded that it may be a weird BIOS bug that is causing this behavior. Because future BIOS updates for this old and unpopular board don't seem likely, I think I'm just going to upgrade to ryzen 3000 before switching to Linux, since I was considering doing that anyway.

I don't know about epic games, I would research how to do that, but for steam games LTT made a video on this: I'm not going to provide much commentary on how to do this because I don't personally support this, but there are ways to do it. As for an OS, there are lots of ways to go about it. First off, I highly recommend learning linux, even if you have to start with a GUI first (however, with certain older dell servers there are some weird hoops to jump trough to install certain versions of Linux, just come back here and start a new topic if you need help with that). Or if you want more modular with your deployment you could run a hypervisor (which is just an OS that runs virtual machines) as your OS like proxmox. This lets you run all your services in it's own contained environment and let you shut down ones you don't need at the moment without messing up any of the other stuff you have running. If your new to servers in general I would recommend the simpler solution of running a desktop distribution of linux like ubuntu or mint to get you started. If you know command line linux well enough running a lighter-weight distro like Ubuntu server or Centos would probably give you more performance to play with on these older servers.

Not necessarily, this is technically a safe temperature, even long term. my concerns would be that thermal compound becomes less effective over time, a few years from now without changing the paste the temps could potentially go into the 95+ degree range with is not good. This can be a bit confusing. "Throttling" is technically considered to be your CPU automatically adjusting it's clock speed to be lower than the base clock. But with AMD precision boost your CPU will automatically be "overclocked" in a way beyond it's rated speed if your cooling can handle it. I would guess that your CPU isn't boosting as much as it could be because of the high temps, so some may consider that to be "Throttleing" As long as it isn't staying at that temp 24/7 its probably okish but not ideal. But again, if old thermal compound causes the temps to rise over time into the 100+ degree range that is bad and you will 100% be throttling at that point. For that reason alone I would personally get a new CPU cooler, but it's technically fine right now.
  14. Task manager's gpu percentage has never been accurate for me... I would double check it with 3rd party software like HwInfo
  15. Just because it claims to support mac doesn't mean that there was some change in an update that made it incompatible, or that it's defective. I have had many issues with usb to sata adapters its always a guessing game to whether they will work or not. If you have a spare drive you know works I would try that in the adapter and try to format it.
