  1. Oh, sorry, I saw the 4770K as the highest. They weren't sorted by name . Anyway, thanks for pointing it out.
  2. Even the CPU you already have is very expensive around. And I think that, for both CPU and GPU, you should wait until they produce chips with smaller lithography or different architecture. Well, unless they get too old, of course
  3. By the way, according to MSI website your board doesn't even support the 4790K : https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/Z87-GD65-GAMING.html#support-cpu
  4. Oh trust me, you are fine. I am looking to get a Core 2 Quad for my PC and just got an RX460. And I think the 970 won't have any problems with 1440p either, unless you have double or triple monitors.
  5. Laptops vs [Mini-PC (with desktop CPU) + Portable Monitor + Peripherals ] combo on entry, mid-level and enthusiast (+GPU here) levels. Curious to see if the combo is practical and if the added performance is worth it.
  6. Maybe. You know what I think though ? You have quite a good PC. Save some money till next gen of Intel CPUs come out and see if there is any radical improvement. Also wait for VEGA consumer GPU to come out. Or get something better than the CPU you have but cheaper than the 4790K
  7. Click the underlined text. You could get new for 280, if they ship to Denmark. Well, you could have to pay import tax or so, not sure about that.
  8. Even that way it's expensive though. The cheapest I found on ebay is 270$, while there is this new on discount but I don't know if they ship it to Denmark.
  9. That seems a good idea, so you only have to spend on the CPU. That chip is quite expensive tbh, so you could consider used. By the way, I think your GPU is good enough.
  10. Lol What's your location ? And, for $550 it is hard to find a "gaming" laptop, but it all depends on the games you play.

    Weird noise

That should be it. I put a temporary 40 GB HDD just to test different flavors of Linux and it was thinner than normally, what made it not fit properly. And yes, the term I was thinking about was "buzzing". I have another of the PSUs and just checked. It's 365 W. Guess should be enough for what I have now. Btw, do you think it will be enough to add an RX 460 ? Well, PCPP links are allowed, so here you go. That is basically the range of products that I can afford. I could also go for 128 GB, but not really into it. Well, the advice I need is regarding the different brands and longevity of each product. Performance is not much of an issue being that my PC is limited at SATA 2 speeds anyway.

    Weird noise

1 - I suspect that too. 2 - I meant in general, do newer HDDs have any improvements compared to the older ones when it comes to noise ? And when it comes to the money, I don't know. Am looking at a list on PCPP. I will ask again for an opinion on which one to get, should I decide to get one. Well, it could be that second point or the fact that it's old now. Well, I may need to clean its dust. The thing though is that I did add some parts that the original office PC didn't have and those could affect the PSU performance. By the way, is there any software to find out what the power output is for the PSU ?

    Weird noise

Well ... : 1 - How come the noise stops (almost) every time I touch the case ? 2 - If I bought a new HDD, have the new ones had any improvement when it comes to noise, or should I get an SSD instead ?
  14. Sometimes my PC does a noise like analogue devices do when there is interference. Sometimes it stops when I touch it, change it's balance slightly or change it's direction. Any ideas ? The PSU is a crappy proprietary one by HP. There are two HDDs in right now, quite old. There is a CD/DVD drive too, which hasn't been working these last days.
  15. Nah, lol. I just wanted to show a similar case to OP's one. Or at least one I saw as similar. And I think this issue can't be addressed by a single review, but it would need a technician (or most probable a scientist) to explain it. I suspect there could be something related to the dual/quad channel configuration. And the way I see those numbers (/4g or /8g or /8gx ?) is just about the commercial codes of the products. You could even have /16g or /16gx meaning the kit comes with 16 GB thus 4 modules. What makes them identical is the frequency and memory size per module. But anyway, good thing you don't have any issues now.
  16. If it's basic PC building, where the PC is supposed to run in the end of the assembly, then I guess job's done. If, on the other hand, the skill is more of an artistic PC building, then there are some huge issues. And, I don't know where they got a case like that, but IF they built it from scratch, they should have put the HDD and CD drives under the mobo. And custom or painted cables would have made the build look way nicer, and yes a little cable management wouldn't hurt, even though it's kinda hard with non-modular PSUs. By the way, you were there. Could give them a hand so they do improve their job.
  17. I have 3 modules right now running at 800 MHz (2 x 1 GB + 1 x @ GB). That's why I don't understand why the other modules don't work. It's not like my mobo has been set to run at 667 MHz. By the way, every electrical component has some resistance to current going through it, and it could vary with time.
  18. If the module has been built to run on 800 MHz, why is it then running on 667 MHz ? And, I am talking about DDR2 in this case, no fancy XMP. They are supposed to be plug and play. And I know they aren't magic. But they are made of circuits, transistors, diodes and such other electrical/electronic elements. There could/should be some type of consumption/degradation. Anyway, I will try cleaning CMOS again, and see if that resolves the issue.
  19. Aren't those kits identical ? I mean, same frequency, same module size (it doesn't matter that one of them comes in groups of two, it's still the same). The thing that I suspect is that they have been running in different frequencies in different motherboards. That, or there is a problem with motherboards when it comes to recognizing RAM modules that have previously run on other machines. I don't know if the situation will look similar, but let me give you a couple of examples : - My 800 MHz module that had been running on 667 MHz for a long time on a 667 MHz mobo, wouldn't be recognized at all by my 800 MHz mobo. - My cousin's 800 MHz module that had also been running for a long time on a 667 MHz mobo, would be recognized but would only run at 667 MHz on the same 800 MHz mobo I tried the other module too. Both modules were tested separately from each other and any other modules. What I think is that after running for a long time under a certain frequency, the RAM modules could somehow get locked unto that frequency. Of course that's just a hypotheses but someone with more technical knowledge could give some more info.
  20. Guess 10 more years will be a long time to wait.
  21. I see. Right now I could use a laptop too, but there are a few things holding me back : 1 - The CPUs and GPUs (and even RAM on certain occasions) are soldered on laptops, meaning that should a part malfunction I would need a professional to repair it. On desktops all it takes is to replace the chip. 2 - The performance of mobile CPUs is way lower than that of desktops. 3 - There isn't much space for cooling on a laptop thus leading to lower longevity. There are some advantages in a laptop of course, but in your case I doubt you could really take advantage of them : 1 - Portability. That's a good feature, but you have the iPad and also, even though still portable, gaming laptops tend be quite heavy. 2 - Less power consumption. A very good feature for office use or other forms of light usage, but that will limit gaming a lot. 3 - You don't need to pay extra for super fancy (even though very good) power supplies and monitors. Again, when it comes to gaming you may prefer something better. If you go for a desktop you should also count the expenses for a nice desk+chair combo, but even with those, I think the desktop is better, unless if you totally need a powerful and portable device in the same time.
  22. I didn't really understand this. You wanted to build a desktop system but he told you to check laptops first or by "building a system" you meant getting a gaming laptop ? The only advantage of the laptop is portability, and some people suggest the desktop+chromebook combo instead.
  23. Guess that's what I'll do. Or not ? I'll wait a little and see if another 750 Ti is around. As for the 460 I don't think the prices with go up again.
  24. In my city I can't even find it. I went earlier today and the most I could find was a 4 GB GT 730 for 90-ish USD. My only options are getting used or ordering one from abroad.
