Alright, I'm actually going to defend apple here.

You better savor this @DrMacintosh, because this is a rare sight indeed.

The ONLY way for a device to detect the health of a battery is to fully charge it (4.2v for li-ion) then fully discharge it (2.5v for li-ion) and see how much mah you get.  Over time a battery's mah rating goes down.

Most consumer electronics don't have the proper way to detect this, instead they keep track of how many times the battery has been discharged.  For example, if you fully discharged a battery a counter would go to 1, if you only drained it halfway, it will go up by 0.5.

The iPhone probably doesn't even know that the battery has been replaced, and I can see why apple wouldn't give just anyone the ability to just reset the counter.

TLDR, Rossmann clearly doesn't know much about batteries, which is fine, and while I'm sure that people being skeptical is a nice side effect for apple, it's not the reason why the iPhone doesn't read a healthy battery when a new one is put in.

The real question is, is there a way to reset the battery discharge counter? If not, it's still on Apple (for withholding the necessary software tools from repair shops). Other devices probably already have a feature like this that can be reset, similar to a car's odometer trip meter...

It is illegal to reset a car odometer.

@Skanky Sylveon My apologies - trip meter. Not trying to endorse illegal activity.

@TopHatProductions115 Apple probably doesn't give out the method to reset it for the same reason that you're not allowed to reset an odometer.

I'm not saying that there isn't a solution, there is, and it should be simple enough to figure out.  I'm just saying that apple's primary motivation probably isn't to make third party repair look bad in this case.

@Skanky Sylveon I'll withhold my disdain for Apple's tolerance (or lack thereof) for independent repair in this case, at least until an official statement is made on the issue.
