  1. I had EVGA blower fan a 660 Gtx and blowers run hot. I won't get a blower ever again, they took it in a replaced it but yeah. Stay away from blowers. I'm surprised guys out there are buying second hand mining cards.. Abused Although your call if you can get it cheap probably a decent amount of 1070's going to hit the streets soon.
  2. Bios flash? I know some new mobo's have two bios chips for some reason. And some of the newest 390s. I can't see bios chips on the rundown anywhere.
  3. Reee Sandy Bridge, was overclock heaven 8 years ago
  4. I had to get back up to speed as i have not upgraded cpu in over 6 years. I would get i9 9900k, Although, at that price don't cheap on a mobo. Still no hyper threading on the i7 makes me very hesitant to upgrade from my Ivy Bridge 3770k.
  5. uses arch and complains some packages are broken xD. If you want stability go with a debian based. Just not Lmde, It is a half hearted attempt and they don't even have the sha256sums on their site. I use a version of debian called Devuan ascii. It's very stable, as a debian based should be. They also rebuild many packages so less dependancies. I can manage my Ipod classic on this OS 'or any gnu/linux' Os , :P It's great. Debian has a much more sane sources list than ubuntu. It might be on an older kernal but they had to fork everything and are only 5 guys working on the distro. However it's worked for me and I have been able to game on it as well. They keep some backported packages as well just in case, which is nice. Lots of maintainers do this. Ubuntu is good, it's pretty well maintained, I just ended up changing things and it broke firefox for me (I don't use ipv6 yet). can't figure out proton on either debian or ubuntu, i can't seem to get the newest driver on 18.0 but than again I have just been waiting for it to become the main in repos.
  6. Well sudo is on and Su is off by defualt in Ubuntu? I don't enjoy that, Try to use command sudo -i if you can't log in there than you may need to reformat find a way around. I know chntpw is a great daemon to change passwords if you forget. However I only used it on windows partitions. My advice is to reinstall, would be fastest. Chrooting can be a good method, not sure what links to make to change password but it's quite simple. You can chroot into encrypted partitions too, just can be a bit of a pain and you need to know the pass phrase. You are using MBR? a gtp, efi boot? Just reinstall if you want help with efi set up I can get you started and you can triple or more boot. Grub sits on the Master boot record or in a boot partition. Typically it can even sit in the root directory , with an efiboot loader pointing the uefi-bios towards grub. Pick a distro and reinstall, trust me it's pretty easy. Just back up your stuff, if you can't from user space than run a live USB.. trouble is you need root to run dd command (I'm sure you can do a quick google how to set up a iso into a live usb on linux) just input and output , maybe blocksize. So if you have a windows pc you can also run rufus, If you do have a live usb boot into it, type sudo -i or su and enter the default password, usually it's just root or my favorite toor. Than you can just back up to a usb or whatever extra partitions you have. I like to separate my home and root for this exact reason, also encryption can by a bit troublesome but it does maintain integrity.
  7. Winreducer.
I have reduced windows Iso over 1 gb. the final size is about 2.2 gb 2.4 gb depending if I install on desktop or laptop with wireless drivers.

I really think it's a great tool, it just takes some time to get it setup how you want it. I removed net framework and had to reinstall it with dism as I don't have steam on my laptop which would install it for you anyway :) .

  8. My WD drive portable has a password but I wish I had the sense to reformat it and encrypt it properly.. I had a data leak because I can't change the damn password and it's pretty lame password, shorter than password itself. Although my network WD drive is running some form of Vista so I disconnected it untill I can find a way to update it. good luck to you guys with WD's default software.
  9. I may buy my first ever AMD CPU in the comming months. Although I don't need an upgrade I got one running 4.1 ghz on 4c 8t It really hasn't been slow enough to justify more OC or replacing it. However in light of recent new a price drop makes them really tempting to jump into the 8core market.
  10. Thanks, anything over 1gbs I have not experienced. It's like uping resolution, I don't think I want to or else I won't wanna go back. Although my VPN will be at like 100mbs which I even use for gaming, so I dunno if more speed would make me jump ship right away. Although where I live Fiber optics is not the easiest thing to obtain. As for cloud computing and eGPU, I rather prefer a local machine and local account. Unless you are running the server.
  11. How will this effect public health if at all, having more radiation everywhere Looks fun though, faster wireless would be nice. It's just a little to slow but it's almost there
  12. Yeah for GPU I recommend going instore to Memory Express or any retailer you can find. Amazon has Huge markups.
  13. how about if you download extra fonts like cursors
  14. BMP images seem a little safer. You can read pictures in note pad, sometimes people can throw code into them. Unlikely but pictures yeah. Fonts I don't have the slightest idea. Usually if you see links in your images like jpgs it could be a security problem.
  15. I found a way to do it, It was not in my bios tho.. My bios kinda sucks on my dell laptop but When I go to boot from a USB or HardDrive. The Minix was at the bottom of the options, It had default password of admin. Than I set a new password which requires 1)one punctuation mark 2) One uppercase 3)one Lowercase 4) one number. "intel® ME password must be changed from the default password prior to gaining access to certain ME options. Intel® ME passwords must be between 8 and 32 characters long, haveat least one upper case character, one lower case character, one number, and a special character (for example: !, @, #, $, %, ^, &, *). " Some one on intel forums mentioned this, and I figured ouwhy it wouldn't change at first. Than I can tell it to disable all it's options, but dunno when I boot my OS it seems to be off but It's supposed to be booting before bios anyway. So I don't know man, it's still there. I changed all settings but this seems to be the one that disables as much as possible, Intel® ME Configuration This is straight from intel.. "The Intel Management Engine State Control (enable/disable) ooption provides a detach capability during field malfunction debug. You can use this option to disable the Intel Management Engine in order to isolate the Intel Management Engine subsystem from the main platform until the debugging process is complete. Intel Management Engine is not actually disabled via theDisable option. It is paused at a very early stage of the Intel Management Engine boot process so that the system has no traffic originating from the Intel Management Engine on any bus. This ensures that you can debug a system problemwithout interference from the Intel management Engine." My Desktop on a Asus z77, has no way I can see to turn it off or access it. My laptop is a bit older. I can really only access the Uefi Bios and I see no mention of Minix in my legacy boot. Turning it off in it's OS dunno if it's off but it won't update on Startup. My linux boot will give me hundreds of Error messages. I think I should go through my Init Scripts and see if I can disable it there.. I new to this not sure, It's telling me it's hung and keeps displaying the same message over and over now, kinda annoying as it's making boot longer than it should be :P Apperently Ctrl + P at boot can help you get into the ME. I trying to figure out why it's hanging, but it's probably because I told it to disable. but it makes booting take a while :/ I see nothing in my startup scripts mentioning ME but I see my Light Dimmer Which I turned off in Bios. Which the Script is renamed with a prefix K01 which means it's disabled but nothing for ME. I new to linux but that at least makes sense to me. It's cool cuz it tells me which I turn my radio switch on and off at boot while I watching all those ME hang warnings I can have a few lines saying I turned off my Wifi switch lol Source https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/motherboards/desktop/sb/intelmebxsettings_v02.pdf Sorry I'm kinda an idiot at this point, I didn't do it right. I tried to disable but appears to be a soft disable.
  16. As most of you are aware of the new vunrability in intel x86 chips. Well, Intel has been including the ME in most of their chips in the last decade anyway. I havn't seen much on the forums about this but I thought I'd share what I know so far. AMD does have it's own little black box of closed code, so don't think AMD is immune to hardware level vulnerabilities. Now the issue is reading kernel leaks from User space at run level three. I have seen researchers tackling Intel ME is running at Run level -3. It boots before Bios, and at later generations and Uefi bios it's pretty well hidden. It has quite a few capabilities, one of which is networking capabilities and an omminous ability to run code while the PC is off but still plugged in for a short while while there is enough power to access ram. It can read and write host memory, but I'm not to sure how much access ME would allow as far as an attack vector. It does have some blocks inplace, which is good. Most home users have no use for Intel ME yet it's included in all the chips actually in the same region as your Bios and firmware. I saw it was mentioned briefly in the WAN show on the fifth of Jan, if you guys are interested in this kind of thing you can dig into it a little bit. Thought it'd be fun to share, there is a group. One of who is Nicola Corna who made a ME_Cleaner hex code. There are bits of code included in ME that can be used to disable it. However removing it outright causes issues and it should shut off after bios. Although much of it could be removed, there was rements. Part of it on recent generations was Gen 2 and 3 of ME have a boot requirement that if removed will shut down the computer after 30 minutes. Stuff like that. Most of it is unencrypted, however there is a small partition that is encrypted, one of the researchers Igor Skochinsky speculated it being for some kind of DRM like netflix. Intel ME has it's own Kernel which has been proven non-essential to running the computer as it can be removed. In short Intel ME is a CPU in your CPU that runs at the lowest Run level. It proceeds intel AMT which has been around since mid 2000's. Running it's own Operating System below the Bios I think it's Minix. I also believe some models have TPM built into some intel cpu instead of needing a new chip. It can allow remote access, it has ICC (intergrated Clock control) So the CPU could manage the clock without needing a battery on the mobo although you probably will have to configure your OS's Time zone anyway.
  17. Ah I have 16 gb but i ran into issues with GameDvr taking some resources while gaming it may just be minimal and make no noticable difference in frame rates though however if it's showing up in task manager when I'm not the one starting it I no likey. I think it only used like 10 mb of ram. The issue is if any programs start using CPU or GPU resource, as I am on a 780 and Ivybridge still. So on some more demanding titles I can hit some lower frame rates as by GPU won't have much more to give. As also I noticed trying to use Vsync on a 2-d Game on my laptop would make it run noticable slow. Than disabling game Dvr did not help on my laptop. Sadly, I cant use Vsync on it without lower frame rates when before it was working just fine. Sad a I5 with fair amounts of ram is running slow on a 2d game.
  18. I would turn off steam from start up, It's probably just better to open it when your ready to do so if your looking for faster boot times. There is a GP setting that will put you to desktop before everything is loaded (So you can use you mouse inputs before everything loads), however I can't recall exactly where it was, or what it was called. There are settings that may help your start up time after loging in, Look under Windows Settings/ Logon. There is a few that could help, and also in other locations in Group policy. in run type (gpedit.msc) if you are running windows 7 or Windows 10 pro and above. Windows 10 home needs to reinstall Gp for it to work, I have not messed with the Runonce list through Gp. However I have not run it the odd time at startups with no noticable negative effects. However I don't disable it in GP as would be a pain if it caused issues in the long run. Good place to look for start up Services is in System Configuration. Yopu can find in Start menu under Administrative tools. It will be a more powerful place to check your start up or Services than in task manager in windows 10.
  19. If they wanted a gaming mode I'd think they'd just need to repackage a windows 10 image with less features that have anything or nothing do with gaming like Ink and the like. Good way to test is if a moniter has a built in FPS tracker too.
  20. If it's anything like windows 10 the direction they took. I will stick with windows 10 and maybe poke around windows 11 to learn a bit. However it's most likely harder with a new OS, I do think the upgrade they gave to move users from windows 7 too 10 worked to some extent but as forceful as some of the free upgrades were pushed many users still using Windows 7 for good reason.
  21. Do you experience and freezing/ stuttering when running something like BF4 offline? It could be an internet issue, but you mention your windows install is only a week old so it may be the ram or Cpu doing the freezing? You mention you never oc your CPU, and your ram by defualt wants to run at 1300, which does seem a little low for the speed of that cpu. However you do have 32 gb which may be why. Any kind of sync should drop frame rates a bit but the point of it usually is too make it smoother / steadier frame rates. You could also mess with some settings in Nvidea control panel like going from balanced too preformance preferance on the slider. You can also verify your moniters are set up in a way that may help.
  22. Yea , Refirbished is usually just like brand new. I got a Asus moniter just like it but at 75 hz. In fact for spending 100 or so more bucks and get display port and more Refresh rate. Hm, I do also have one display port on my card,
