WeeemRCB got a reaction from Dot-_-Com in Moving Windows and data from SSD to a HDD
    It shouldn't be that big.
My system is old as shit too and I run some space hungry programs on there (Photoshop suite etc)

1st thing to do is: Start | Run | cleanmgr.exe
This is the system "disk cleaner". Select C drive and then once it comes up with the list of things it can clean, ignore it and click "Clean up system files"
It will ask you for the C: drive again and this time it'll show you the same as before + the update backups.
This should get you back a decent amount of space.

On my system tho, the one thing that helped was Treesize.
Same idea as WinDirStat although I find it easier to read the old Treesize Pi-chart.
With that I saw that 1/3 of my 100Gb C partition was being used by Adobe updates.

Every time I opened a PDF, Adobe offers to do an update to the reader. I always ignore it, but what I didn't realise is that it downloaded it in the background ready to install. It does this for every new version, but because I never let it install it didn't expunge the download(s).

They get put in this directory:  C:\ProgramData\Adobe\ARM\
So I added a line to my logon/start-up script to auto remove them, so they no longer hog any space.

Here's all the files I remove on startup in case that's useful to keep your system clean too
    Start /MIN cmd /c del /q /f C:\windows\user.dmp Start /MIN cmd /c del /Q /F C:\windows\memory.dmp Start /MIN cmd /c del /Q /F C:\windows\drwtsn32.log Start /MIN cmd /c del /Q /F C:\windows\Qtc_temp* Start /MIN cmd /c del /Q /F C:\temp\*.tmp Start /MIN cmd /c del /Q /F C:\temp\~* Start /MIN cmd /c del /Q /F %temp%\* Start /MIN cmd /c del /Q /F %tmp%\* Start /MIN cmd /c del /Q /F %SystemRoot%\temp\* Start /MIN cmd /c del /Q /F C:\windows\~*.tmp Start /MIN cmd /c del /Q /F %userprofile%\Desktop\*.log Start /MIN cmd /c del /Q /F %userprofile%\AppData\Local\CrashDumps\*.dmp Start /MIN cmd /c del /Q /F /S C:\ProgramData\Adobe\ARM\*
Before, my C drive was like yours - 99% full
After I got rid of the Adobe downloads:

If you still want to migrate across to a new drive, I can recommend the Macrium Reflect software.
Put the new drive in a caddy and select "Clone Drive" and it'll clone it across.
Then power off, put the new drive in and boot up. Should work first time. 👍

I'm slightly ashamed, that Linus used the card with such a short range.
I got inspired by that solution. Googled a bit slightly better one, found nothing and eventually in 2 days prepared my (slightly wanky) solution, that covers every single use case that I can imagine (except of the total blackout)

That's how I see my switch in Home Assistant.

Nicely embedded in the case. As the source of power, I used a USB header to USB adapter

I attached together my ESP D1 Mini and 5V Relay to power up the PC and a set of diode and resistor to see the power status

    Here's a real world application
I've built a system that's almost ready to deploy into my elderly mum's house.
Motion sensors, door sensors, water leak sensors, thermostats, smart switches, a camera and a tidy wee dashboard interface for her mobile and tablet.

    Why?
She's had a couple of falls this year, but hasn't called us because she didn't want us to worry 😕
She had an SOS dongle before, but didn't use it even though she was once down for over a day (covid related)
I got her an early Crimbo present of an LTE smart watch which she loves. Complete with fall detection and SOS to replace the dongle, but we still don't completely trust her to use it.

So with the motion sensors I'm putting in, if she has another fall then, after a period of no motion all siblings will get an sms to let us know which room she was in last and how long she's not moved. That way we can call her to make sure she's ok or coordinate whoever's closest to stop by and make sure all is well.
Could be as simple as she's passed out on the sofa, but we can also account for false positives with logic.

Well worth the time and effort

Trying to controll a slow system (in floor heating, Linus actually touches upon this in the video) with a fast system measuring rom temp is the wrong way to go about this.

Preferably you set the inlet temperature to the loops to a fix value and the flow rate to a fixed value. Then you measure the return temperature and control by the temp difference between inlet and outlet. Before you are set you will need an adjustment period to determine what delta T corresponds to what room temperature.

The larger the delta T is the colder the room is since you disipate more heating power. It will also acomodate some of the weight of the slab by using this indirect way of controling the room temp.

If you want to be able to individually control the room temp you do this by allowing controll of an offset on the ”standard” delta T manually.

Controlling in floor heating with a room air sensor will lead to a wavey indoor temp which is worse for comfort than a stable temperature.

    You've totally missed the point.
This was just one isolated example of how automations can improve home life as well as save cost over time.

People will pay for convenience. That's always been the case.
Not that long ago, owning a dishwasher was seen as excessive or extravagant. Nowadays it's normal for homes to have one (or more). Which costs money.
Automation in the home will one day (soon) be the norm 😉

The problem with the switches was with the manufacturer, not the end user so it looks bad in this light, as it would with any faulty product.

My desire is to have an automated home (not a "smart home") that is simple so it compliments your home life and be seamless in the background.
Like headlights on your car that automatically come on when it's dark enough. Such a simple thing and it quickly becomes second nature to let it do it for you.

Another advantage is that it saves time. A video I saw recently there was a guy saying it took him about 4 minutes at night to walk through the house switching off lights (he has kids) before he went to bed. Not a chore in itself, but over a year that works out to be 24hrs. 1 whole day of the year spent just switching off lights at night.

The hardest thing I found in setting up mine is re-training myself not to switch lights off when leaving a room. I set up mine about a month ago and I'm still occasionally trying to knock the light switch with my elbow when leaving the kitchen with my hands full 😄

WeeemRCB reacted to Stahlmann in I finally figured out how to get Netflix HDR working on W10/W11
(First of all sorry mods, i couldn't decide what subforum was best fitted for this)

I have been struggling to get it to work for a long time. Netflix just never showed the "HDR" logo for movies and it never played back HDR in any way, shape or form. I finally stumbled across an older topic on the microsoft forum talking about the same issue.

    Solution:
You need the PAID "HEVC video extention" app from the microsoft store to enable HDR for netflix on a windows PC. (It costs 0,99€ for me in Germany)

How is it that this is not mentioned anywhere in the Netflix or Microsoft support pages on HDR playback? They all basically just say that you have to enable HDR in your windows display settings and that's it. No word about the required paid extension.

I'm really mad because i have been trying to get it to work for months now and one simple hint at this would have saved me hours of troubleshooting. This is fucking ridiculous. I hope this helps other people who cannot figure it out like i did for the longest time.

Surprised a used GoPro wasn't a suggestion for camera. I use an old Hero 4 which is powered by the PC's USB, has auto exposure, doesn't need a bright light and as it's so light you can stick it pretty much anywhere.   I'm also disappointed in the mic quality At the very least I would have expected the recommendation of a shock mount for the mic so table knocks and bumps don't get transmitted directly into the mic.   Also something to limit plosives. The Dynamic mic audio was full of it until Linus was playing, so his head was turned away slightly. Even a sock over the mic would have helped in a pinch until you get a proper foam mic cover. Sure, it will soften the audio ever so slightly, but nothing that can't be fixed with the EQ. You can't EQ away plosives.

Chase has been a PG content creator for the last 10 years or so and YT is his main income.
He reached out to his YT partner who did initial investigation, but YT still hasn't done anything ... 10 days and counting since his channel was deleted.
If they can do this to a big YouTuber like him, who will be next?

HAXM is made by Intel. For AMD there should be a new API in Windows: https://www.infoq.com/news/2018/07/android-emulator-amd-hyperv/

    ~edit: Also see here: https://developer.android.com/studio/run/emulator-acceleration#choose-windows-hypervisor
Criteria Hypervisor You have an Intel processor and do not need to run Hyper-V at the same time as the Android Emulator. Use Intel HAXM. You have an Intel processor and do need to run Hyper-V at the same time as the Android Emulator. Use WHPX. You have an AMD processor. Use WHPX.

WeeemRCB reacted to colonel_mortis in Hiding an image URL...
A simple solution would be to have another PHP file on your server that proxies the image. That script would look something like
    <?php $webcamImageUrl = "http://111.111.111.111/snapshot.jpeg"; $curlRequest = curl_init(); curl_setopt($curlRequest, CURLOPT_URL, $webcamImageUrl); curl_setopt($curlRequest, CURLOPT_HEADER, false); // Don't include the response headers in the result curl_setopt($curlRequest, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, true); // Return the body of the requested resource curl_setopt($curlRequest, CURLOPT_TIMEOUT, 10); // Timeout if it takes > 10s $imageData = curl_exec($curlRequest); if (curl_error($curlRequest)) { http_response_code(500); echo "Error: " . curl_error($curlRequest); exit; } header("Content-Type: " . curl_getinfo($curlRequest, CURLINFO_CONTENT_TYPE)); echo $imageData; That could be improved by caching the image on disk so it doesn't get requested too often.

PHP isn't the ideal language for this because it has to load the whole image into memory before it can send it back to the user, but it should be good enough for your use case.

It'll be OEM, so probably not transferable.

    3 options.
    1) You could try to transfer it. If you align it with a Microsoft account then when you move you might be able to transfer the license. If yes, then it's a bit of a hoohah (takes 10 mins or so with a lot of typing of codes), but if it works then you transfer the license.

    2) You could run it as "unlicensed".
You can't customise the installation, but if it's already customised then those settings will stay.  You just can't change them (wallpaper etc)

    3) You can pick up a license from eBay or Amazon at a ... competitive price.
